Choose Pokémon Scarlet or Pokémon Violet if you want a Pokémon RPG you can play now on Nintendo Switch. They offer the open-world Paldea region, three connected story routes, Terastallization, a two-part expansion and Pokémon HOME linking subject to game-specific availability.
Wait for Pokémon Winds and Pokémon Waves if you prefer the announced island-and-ocean setting and are prepared to use Nintendo Switch 2. The pair is planned for a simultaneous worldwide release in 2027, but pricing, preorder timing, detailed version exclusives, story structure, battle systems, downloadable content, HOME compatibility and final performance have not been established. The announcement describes a product still in development, so it cannot support a hands-on comparison yet.

Decide first whether you want to play now or wait until 2027
Choose Scarlet or Violet when immediate play matters
Scarlet and Violet are complete Nintendo Switch releases rather than announced projects. You can begin a Paldea adventure without waiting for a release window, buying new hardware or guessing which promised systems will ship. Their three-route structure lets you pursue Victory Road, Path of Legends and Starfall Street as interwoven objectives instead of following one mandatory sequence. Terastallization gives battles a defined strategic identity, and The Hidden Treasure of Area Zero adds a two-part post-launch campaign with new areas, characters and Pokémon.
#1 Best Overall
- Embark on a new Pokémon adventure
- Catch, battle, and train Pokémon in the Paldea Region, a vast land filled with lakes, towering peaks, wastelands, small towns, and sprawling cities.
- Choose either Sprigatito, Fuecoco, or Quaxly, to be your first partner Pokémon before setting off on your journey through Paldea.
- Embark on an independent study called the Treasure Hunt to gain new experiences, meet new people, and find your very own treasure.
This is the practical choice for someone who already owns a Nintendo Switch, wants a Pokémon RPG during the current year, or values a known feature set over future possibilities. The game’s age is also useful: guides, team advice and explanations of its systems are already available, while the new pair’s mechanics remain subject to change.
Wait when the new setting is the main attraction
Winds and Waves is the better fit for a reader who specifically wants to explore islands surrounded by a large ocean and see how Pokémon-specific ecosystems shape that environment. The announcement presents the setting as an open world with windswept islands and glittering waves that ebb and flow. That description establishes the intended atmosphere and geography, not the final size of the map, travel system, density of activities or technical quality.
Waiting also means accepting an unknown timetable beyond the announced 2027 year. No preorder date or price has been confirmed. If you do not yet own Nintendo Switch 2, the console becomes part of the decision; the pair is announced as exclusive to that hardware.
World design: connected Paldea or an island-and-ocean journey
What Paldea gives you
Paldea is designed so towns blend into wilderness without borders. That arrangement supports a continuous overland route: leaving a settlement takes you directly into the surrounding landscape rather than into a separate level or menu. The official description frames the region as an open world and organizes its major objectives across the three named story paths.
Choose this structure if you prefer moving between settlements and wild areas on one connected map, setting your own order for the principal objectives and building a team while the three narratives progress. The confirmed design does not imply that every activity is equally difficult at every point, so do not treat “open world” as a promise of fully level-scaled encounters.
Rank #2
- New Pokémon to Discover - Learn new details about Sprigatito, Fuecoco, and Quaxly—the three Pokémon from which you’ll choose your first partner—along with other wonderful new Pokémon, including the Legendary Pokémon Koraidon and Miraidon!
- The World of Pokémon Has Evolved - Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet offer an open-world experience that only the Pokémon series can deliver—one welcoming even to newcomers to the series.
- You can experience a new style of adventure, with a world that you’re free to explore at your leisure and not in an order dictated by the story. You will, of course, journey to hone your skills as a Pokémon Trainer, but many more discoveries and stories await you. Meet a variety of people and Pokémon, and adventure in the world of Pokémon the way you want to.
- A Deeper Experience with Multiplayer* Gameplay - Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet allow multiplayer gameplay with up to four players. Along with series staples, such as trading and battling Pokémon, you will be able to explore the various locations of the region in these games with other players. You can discover new Pokémon and explore unfamiliar areas with your friends and family, opening the door to an adventure more precious and fun than ever!
- Meet the characters - As one of the main characters, you’ll set off on your adventure. Your outfit will vary depending on whether you play Pokémon Scarlet or Pokémon Violet. Who knows what kind of story awaits you? For the first time in the series, one of two different professors will appear in your game depending on the version you choose to play.
What the Winds and Waves setting promises—and does not
The new pair shifts the visual idea from an inland region to windswept islands and a vast ocean. Pokémon-specific ecosystems are part of the announcement, suggesting that habitats are a central organizing idea. However, there is no confirmed list of islands, ocean traversal methods, weather rules, environmental effects or required progression order.
Because the footage is from a product in development, screenshots should be read as an indication of direction rather than a performance test. The announcement’s wording is explicit: “Screenshots and footage are from a product in development and not final. Actual gameplay experience may vary.” That caveat matters if your choice depends on frame rate, image quality, loading behavior or map scale; none of those can be judged reliably yet.
Story and battles: known systems versus an open question
Scarlet and Violet’s three routes
The three named routes give Scarlet and Violet a clear planning framework:
- Victory Road: the route associated with the traditional Pokémon League objective.
- Path of Legends: a separate adventure path built into the Paldea campaign.
- Starfall Street: a third route with its own story objectives.
The routes are described as interwoven, so the game is not limited to one linear campaign. If you like tracking several goals at once and returning to a route after developing your team, this is a concrete advantage of choosing a released game whose structure is documented.
Terastallization is the confirmed battle hook
Paldea’s signature battle feature is Terastallization. Activating it gives a Pokémon a Tera Type and can change the Pokémon’s type during battle. That creates a tactical decision: the type displayed by a Pokémon before activation is not necessarily the type you will use after the transformation. The feature is part of the confirmed Paldea design, not an assumption based on promotional artwork.
Rank #3
- Embark on a new Pokémon adventure
- Catch, battle, and train Pokémon in the Paldea Region, a vast land filled with lakes, towering peaks, wastelands, small towns, and sprawling cities
- Choose either Sprigatito, Fuecoco, or Quaxly, to be your first partner Pokémon before setting off on your journey through Paldea
- Embark on an independent study called the Treasure Hunt to gain new experiences, meet new people, and find your very own treasure
Do not project Terastallization onto Winds and Waves. The announcement does not describe a replacement gimmick, a returning system or even a comparable battle mechanic. Until an official feature explanation appears, any claim about how battles will differ is speculation.
Starters and the information each announcement provides
Both pairs begin with one Grass, one Fire and one Water option. Scarlet and Violet’s starters are familiar choices for a released game; the new pair’s announcement additionally provides measurements, weights and abilities.
| Game pair | Starter | Type | Height | Weight | Ability stated in announcement |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Scarlet and Violet | Sprigatito | Grass | Not stated in the cited announcement | Not stated in the cited announcement | Not stated in the cited announcement |
| Scarlet and Violet | Fuecoco | Fire | Not stated in the cited announcement | Not stated in the cited announcement | Not stated in the cited announcement |
| Scarlet and Violet | Quaxly | Water | Not stated in the cited announcement | Not stated in the cited announcement | Not stated in the cited announcement |
| Winds and Waves | Browt | Grass | 0.3 m | 3.5 kg | Overgrow |
| Winds and Waves | Pombon | Fire | 0.4 m | 6.7 kg | Blaze |
| Winds and Waves | Gecqua | Water | 0.3 m | 4.3 kg | Torrent |
The measurements and abilities for Browt, Pombon and Gecqua come from the announcement and should not be treated as evidence of their final evolutions, moves or competitive roles. Those details have not been supplied. If you are choosing now, select Sprigatito, Fuecoco or Quaxly based on the type and design you want to play; if you are waiting, the three new names are confirmed starting points but not a complete team-building guide.
Edition differences: what is confirmed for each pair
Scarlet and Violet
The confirmed legendary distinction is straightforward: Koraidon is associated with Scarlet and Miraidon with Violet. That is a meaningful choice if you have a preferred legendary design. The games also have version-specific content, but the information available here does not provide a complete catalogue of every exclusive Pokémon or mechanic, so a purchase decision should not rely on an invented or incomplete list.
Winds and Waves
The announcement confirms that the player-character outfit differs between the two versions. It does not identify a comprehensive set of version-exclusive Pokémon, legendary assignments, story branches or mechanical differences. Treat any social-media list that presents those details as final with caution until the publisher confirms them.

Expansion and collection plans
What you can add to Scarlet and Violet
The Hidden Treasure of Area Zero is a two-part expansion for Scarlet and Violet. It adds areas, characters and Pokémon, extending the Paldea experience beyond the base release. If additional official content is part of your buying calculation, this is an established option rather than a promise.
Scarlet and Violet can link with Pokémon HOME, although the official description qualifies that connection by saying Pokémon availability is specific to each game. Linking therefore should not be interpreted as every Pokémon being transferable in every direction or at every time.
What has not been promised for Winds and Waves
The announcement does not provide a DLC roadmap or HOME compatibility details for Winds and Waves. It is safer to buy the new pair for its announced setting and release plan, not for an assumed expansion or collection workflow. If moving Pokémon between games is essential to you, wait for a dedicated compatibility announcement.
Important unknowns before you reserve a future purchase
| Unknown | Why it affects the decision | Current position |
|---|---|---|
| Price | Determines the total cost alongside Nintendo Switch 2 | Not announced |
| Preorder timing | Sets when you can secure a copy and which editions are offered | Not announced |
| Detailed version exclusives | May determine which edition fits your collection | Only the outfit difference is confirmed |
| Story structure | Shows whether the campaign is linear, multi-route or exploration-led | Not announced |
| Battle gimmick | Could change team-building and battle strategy | Not announced |
| DLC | Changes the expected amount of post-launch content | Not announced |
| Pokémon HOME support | Matters for transferring and maintaining a collection | Not announced |
| Final technical performance | Determines how the world actually runs on Switch 2 | Cannot be judged from development footage |
These are not minor omissions. They are the facts that normally settle a preorder decision, so a cautious buyer should wait for official updates instead of filling the gaps with rumors.

Match the game to your priorities
| Your priority | Better-supported choice | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Play a Pokémon RPG immediately | Scarlet or Violet | It is already released for Nintendo Switch. |
| Use hardware you already own | Scarlet or Violet if you own Nintendo Switch | Winds and Waves is announced for Nintendo Switch 2 only. |
| Explore connected towns and wilderness | Scarlet or Violet | That Paldea structure is confirmed. |
| Explore islands and a large ocean | Wait for Winds and Waves | That environment is the new pair’s defining announced setting. |
| Use a documented multi-route campaign | Scarlet or Violet | Victory Road, Path of Legends and Starfall Street are named. |
| Build around a known battle transformation | Scarlet or Violet | Terastallization is confirmed; the new battle system is not. |
| Rely on announced DLC or HOME details | Scarlet or Violet | The expansion and qualified HOME linking are documented only for these games. |
| Avoid buying before major details are known | Wait | Winds and Waves still lacks price, preorder, exclusives, DLC, HOME and performance information. |
A practical decision process
- Check your console. If you have Nintendo Switch but not Nintendo Switch 2, Scarlet or Violet is the immediately compatible choice. Plan for additional hardware if you want Winds and Waves at launch.
- Set your time horizon. Choose a released game if you want to play during 2026. Choose waiting if a 2027 launch is acceptable and you are comfortable with details arriving later.
- Choose your world first. Select Paldea for connected towns and wilderness. Select the upcoming pair only if islands, ocean and habitat-focused exploration are more compelling than a known map.
- Choose your battle information threshold. If Terastallization is enough to guide your team planning, Scarlet and Violet provide a documented system. If you want to know the next battle gimmick before committing, postpone the decision.
- Choose your edition using confirmed differences only. For Scarlet and Violet, compare Koraidon and Miraidon. For Winds and Waves, the currently confirmed distinction is the player-character outfit; do not pay a premium based on unconfirmed exclusives.
- Recheck official updates before preordering. Look specifically for price, preorder date, full version differences, story details, battle mechanics, DLC, HOME support and technical information. Those updates can change the value calculation.
How to buy Scarlet or Violet without confusing it with the new pair
If you decide to play now, identify the product as the Pokémon Scarlet Nintendo Switch game or the Pokémon Violet Nintendo Switch game and verify the platform and edition before checkout. The announced Winds and Waves pair is not a current Nintendo Switch release and should not be treated as a preorder listing for an existing game. Retail availability and a particular physical listing are not established here, so check the seller, edition name and region yourself.
Buying Scarlet or Violet now does not establish that Winds and Waves will share save data, Pokémon transfers, downloadable content or other services. Consider the current games on their own merits: Paldea, the three routes, Terastallization, The Hidden Treasure of Area Zero and the qualified HOME connection are the features you can evaluate today.
What to monitor while waiting
- An official price and preorder schedule for both versions.
- A complete explanation of version-exclusive Pokémon, characters and mechanics.
- A story outline that clarifies whether the campaign has multiple routes.
- The battle system, including whether any new transformation or type mechanic replaces or complements Terastallization.
- DLC plans and a specific Pokémon HOME compatibility statement.
- Final technical demonstrations or performance information on Nintendo Switch 2.
Until those points are answered, the comparison is not between two equally documented products. It is between a released, feature-defined RPG and an announced game pair whose setting and launch window are known but whose most consequential purchase details remain open.
