Breaking a Pokémon TCG tournament rule does not automatically mean disqualification. The judge applies the infraction and penalty defined in the current Penalty Guidelines, considering severity, intent, tournament impact and whether the problem can be corrected immediately. Outcomes range from a caution or warning to a game loss, match loss or disqualification.
A disqualification is reserved for extreme conduct that significantly harms the integrity or operation of the event. It removes the player from the tournament and makes the player ineligible for prizes.
Penalty outcomes at a glance
These sanctions do not all affect the same part of a tournament. A caution records and corrects a minor issue; a warning formally records a more serious procedural problem; a game loss changes one game; a match loss changes the match; and a disqualification ends participation.

| Penalty | What it affects | How the handbook characterizes it |
|---|---|---|
| Caution | Conduct record and immediate correction | Listed outcome for a minor procedural-error example |
| Warning | Conduct record and tournament procedure | Listed outcome for a major procedural-error example |
| Game Loss | The game result | Listed outcome for a severe procedural-error example |
| Match Loss | The match result | Can apply when a disqualification interrupts an ongoing match or under the relevant single-elimination timing rule |
| Disqualification | The player’s event participation and prize eligibility | The most serious penalty; reserved for extreme cases |
The table describes the handbook’s outcome categories, not an automatic punishment for every mistake. The exact infraction and its prescribed penalty come from the Penalty Guidelines in force for that tournament.

What “player conduct” covers
Player Conduct is broader than an illegal card play. The handbook describes it as behavior that contradicts the fundamental rules of tournament participation. It includes actions that interfere with an event’s orderly operation, staff, nearby matches or other participants.
Procedural errors
Procedural errors affect the smooth, uninterrupted progression of the tournament. A minor error can usually be corrected almost immediately. A major error causes delay or inconvenience to staff, nearby players or the wider participant group. The handbook’s example lists a caution for a minor error, a warning for a major error and a game loss for a severe error.
The classification is therefore about the actual infraction and its effect, not simply whether a player made a mistake. A judge must use the current guideline for the event rather than choosing a penalty from memory.

A problem may involve both tournament procedure and the game itself. For example, an issue with a deck list, extra cards in a deck box or the way information is supplied to an opponent can have a specific Pokémon TCG procedure. The judge should identify the applicable infraction first, then apply the corresponding penalty and correction.
How judges determine severity
Several decision factors matter when a judge evaluates conduct:

- What happened: The judge identifies the rule or procedure involved and the penalty category in the current Penalty Guidelines.
- How serious it was: Minor, major and severe procedural errors have different listed outcomes.
- Event impact: Delay, inconvenience or disruption to staff and other matches can increase the seriousness.
- Intent and circumstances: The handbook’s disqualification standard expressly covers actions that are intentional or unintentional when their impact is extreme.
- Timing: A problem during a match, between rounds, during Swiss play or during single elimination can trigger different procedures.
A caution or warning is not the same as a changed match result. A game loss changes a game; a match loss changes the match; and a disqualification ends the player’s event participation. Judges should explain the infraction and the consequence so the player understands which of these outcomes has occurred.
When can a player be disqualified?

The handbook says disqualification should be strictly reserved for extreme cases in which a player’s actions, whether intentional or unintentional, have significantly and negatively affected the integrity or operation of the entire event. This is a much higher threshold than an ordinary procedural error.
Immediate effects of a disqualification
- The player is removed from the tournament.
- The player becomes ineligible for prizes.
- The tournament record is handled according to the applicable match-timing rule.
Swiss-round timing
If a Swiss-round match is still in progress when the disqualification is issued, the player should also receive a Match Loss for that current, unfinished match. If the player is not playing an ongoing match, the disqualification is applied immediately.
Single-elimination timing
In single elimination, a disqualification also produces a Match Loss for the most recent single-elimination match. Advancement is then handled under the handbook’s timing rules. Because elimination brackets can be at different stages, the judge’s recorded time and the current handbook procedure determine the practical result.

Slow play and the 2026 overtime structure
For Championship events, a January 2026 notice changed the time-call structure effective February 13, 2026. When time is called, the active player finishes the current turn, followed by three additional turns. The overtime clock is 15 minutes.
This structure gives players time to complete the turn already in progress and provides a defined window in which judges can address slow-play concerns. It does not give either player permission to stall. Deliberately or carelessly taking excessive time can still be handled under the applicable Penalty Guidelines.
What players should do at time call
- Listen for the official time announcement and confirm which player is active.
- Finish the current turn as directed by the event procedure.
- Count the three additional turns accurately, identifying whose turn is being played.
- Keep play moving and call a judge immediately if a dispute, rules question or timing confusion prevents progress.
- Follow the judge’s ruling on the 15-minute overtime clock and the match-ending procedure.
The exact slow-play penalty depends on the infraction and the current guideline. The 2026 notice establishes the timing framework; it does not replace the judge’s authority to penalize conduct that delays the match.
Late arrival: what is and is not automatic
Late arrival is governed by the event’s current Tournament Rules Handbook and Penalty Guidelines. The supplied official materials do not establish one universal late-arrival penalty that applies to every event, format or point in a round. A player should not assume that arriving late is automatically a game loss, match loss or disqualification.
As soon as you arrive, report to the tournament staff or judge rather than joining a table without explanation. Tell the judge when you arrived and which round or match you were assigned. Staff can apply the procedure for that event, record the correct result and explain whether any additional penalty is required.

Deck-list, deck-box and open-deck-list problems
The Q1 2026 update added Pokémon TCG Open Deck List review penalties and guidance for extra cards or extra decks found in a deck box. These are TCG-specific procedures, so the exact penalty cannot be inferred from the general caution-warning-game-loss ladder alone.
Before the event
- Check that the submitted deck list matches the deck you will present.
- Remove extra cards and any other deck from the deck box unless the event procedure expressly allows them.
- Make sure the list is legible and complete under the event’s submission method.
- Ask staff how and when a deck list will be provided to an opponent at that tournament.
If a judge finds a problem
Stop and let the judge inspect the deck, list and deck box. Do not move cards or alter the list while the ruling is being made. Ask which infraction is being applied, what correction is required and whether the result changes a game or match. The Q3 2026 update clarified when a deck list is provided to an opponent, so the event’s current procedure controls.
The same Q1 update also clarified that removing a parent or guardian does not automatically disqualify the child represented by that adult. Any action against the child must be based on the applicable conduct rules and facts of the incident.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Multiple infractions and when a match ends
The Q3 2026 update added guidance on applying the same penalty for multiple infractions and clarified when a match ends. This matters when several related problems are discovered in one match or when a judge is deciding whether play can continue after a result-changing penalty.
Players should not assume that repeating a mistake always produces a new, identical penalty or that a match continues after a game or match result has been determined. Let the judge apply the current section of the Penalty Guidelines, record the ruling and announce whether the match is over.

What to do when a judge issues a penalty
- Pause the game: Keep the game state, cards and written materials as they are until the judge instructs you otherwise.
- Describe facts, not conclusions: Explain what happened, when it happened and what actions you took.
- Ask for the infraction: Request the name or category of the rule problem and whether the outcome is a caution, warning, game loss, match loss or disqualification.
- Follow the correction: Apply the judge’s instructions before resuming play or leaving the table.
- Check the recorded result: Confirm that the match result and any penalty record reflect the ruling the judge announced.
- Use the event’s escalation process: If you believe a ruling was misunderstood, ask staff what review or appeal procedure is available at that event. Do not argue with an opponent or delay another round while trying to resolve it.
Practical examples
Minor procedural error
A player makes a procedural mistake that can be corrected almost immediately and does not materially delay the event. The handbook’s procedural-error example lists a caution for this level. The judge still records the issue and explains the correction.
Major procedural error
A mistake causes delay or inconvenience to staff or nearby players. The example outcome is a warning. The warning is a conduct record; it is not itself a game or match result.
Severe procedural error
A severe procedural error can receive a game loss under the example ladder. That changes the affected game and can change the match’s remaining game plan, but it is not the same as disqualification.
Extreme event-wide conduct
Only conduct meeting the handbook’s extreme standard should receive a disqualification. If the player is in an unfinished Swiss match, the current match also receives a Match Loss; in single elimination, the most recent single-elimination match is handled under the handbook’s timing rule.
Which rules should you check before competing?
Use the official Play! Pokémon resources page to locate the current versions of the Standards of Conduct, Tournament Rules Handbook, Penalty Guidelines and Pokémon TCG Tournament Handbook. Pokémon periodically reviews and updates these documents, and event notices can change procedures during a season.
For a 2026 event, pay particular attention to the February 13 overtime structure, the Q1 Open Deck List and extra-card guidance, and the Q3 clarifications on multiple infractions, match endings and deck-list delivery. If an event’s posted instructions differ from an older document, ask the head judge which current version governs that event.
What the official material does not establish
The official materials do not publish a statistic showing how often Pokémon TCG penalties or disqualifications occur. A penalty should therefore be understood through its rule, severity and effect—not through an assumed frequency. The controlling question at an event is always which current guideline applies to the facts in front of the judge.
