To identify a Pokémon TCG card’s rarity, look for the small printed mark in the lower information area of the card. In the Scarlet & Violet series, the basic symbols are a black circle for Common, a black diamond for Uncommon, and a black star for Rare. Newer classes use pairs or gold and foil stars. The mark identifies the card’s rarity class; it does not, by itself, establish a price, collector demand, competitive strength, or pack odds.
This guide decodes the Scarlet & Violet symbol system, explains how foil and alternate-art treatments fit into it, and shows how to verify cards from older eras when the same key no longer applies.
Scarlet & Violet rarity symbols at a glance
The following key reflects the Scarlet & Violet explanation published by The Pokémon Company International on March 30, 2023. The shape, number, color, and finish of the stars matter; do not identify a card from shine alone.
| Printed mark | Rarity | What the official description associates with it |
|---|---|---|
| Solid black circle | Common | One of the three long-standing basic rarity symbols. |
| Solid black diamond | Uncommon | One of the three long-standing basic rarity symbols. |
| Solid black star | Rare | The basic Rare class; one black star is not the same as two black stars. |
| Two solid black stars | Double Rare | Used for Pokémon ex, including Tera Pokémon ex. |
| Two shiny foil stars | Ultra Rare | More exclusive full-art foil versions of Pokémon ex and some Supporter cards. |
| One shiny gold star | Illustration Rare | Full-art alternate-art illustrations of Common, Uncommon, and Rare Pokémon. |
| A gold-and-silver star pair | Special Illustration Rare | Full-art alternate-art illustrations of Pokémon ex or Supporter cards. |
| Three shiny gold stars | Hyper Rare | Full-art foil cards with gilded borders and accents; this class was previously known as secret rare. |
The ordinary circle, diamond, and star remain unchanged in Scarlet & Violet. As The Pokémon Company International puts it, “The solid black symbols for common, uncommon, and rare—circle, diamond, and star—will remain unchanged.”

How to read the mark on a card
- Find the rarity symbol. Hold the card upright and inspect the small symbol printed near the card number and set information. Very bright foil can make a black mark appear reflective, so use the shape and number of symbols first.
- Count the stars. One black star is Rare; two black stars are Double Rare. A pair of shiny stars belongs to Ultra Rare, while gold stars indicate the newer illustration-focused classes.
- Check the finish and color. Gold, silver, foil, and textured treatments are meaningful only in combination with the printed symbol. A glossy card without the corresponding mark is not automatically Ultra Rare, Illustration Rare, or Hyper Rare.
- Confirm the card type and set. A full-art Pokémon ex, a Supporter, and a standard Pokémon can use different Scarlet & Violet classes. If the visual key does not fit the card, consult the checklist for that expansion or the official card database.
What each Scarlet & Violet class means
Common, Uncommon, and Rare
These are the foundational classes. A solid black circle denotes Common, a solid black diamond denotes Uncommon, and one solid black star denotes Rare. The symbols can appear on several treatments, including parallel-foil cards. The symbol continues to identify the rarity class even when the surface pattern around the artwork changes.
Double Rare
Double Rare is represented by two solid black stars. In the Scarlet & Violet system, the category includes Pokémon ex, including Tera Pokémon ex. The official announcement also describes a foil border and star-like sheen on Double Rare cards, with a distinctive foil and textured appearance for Double Rare Tera Pokémon ex. Those visual effects support identification, but the two printed black stars are the decisive mark.
The company summarized the change as: “Moving forward, double rare cards are represented with two solid black stars.”

Ultra Rare
Ultra Rare uses two shiny foil stars. The class is associated with more exclusive full-art foil versions of Pokémon ex and with some Supporter cards. Because ordinary foil can reflect light in many ways, look for the pair of shiny stars rather than treating any reflective surface as proof of Ultra Rare.

Illustration Rare
Illustration Rare is represented by one shiny gold star. The class covers alternate-art Common, Uncommon, and Rare Pokémon presented as full-art foil illustrations. The gold star distinguishes it from a one-star Rare: one is a solid black symbol, the other is a shiny gold symbol.
The Pokémon Company International described this as “the brand-new rarity known as illustration rare,” represented by one shiny gold star.
Special Illustration Rare
Special Illustration Rare uses a gold-and-silver star pair. It is the alternate-art class for Pokémon ex and Supporter cards with full-art foil illustrations. Although both Illustration Rare and Special Illustration Rare feature alternate artwork, the eligible card type and the star treatment separate them.

Rarity is not a price tag
A rarity symbol tells you which class the publisher assigned to the card. It does not guarantee a market value, scarcity percentage, desirability, tournament performance, or a particular pull rate. Two cards in different classes can have very different demand, and cards in the same class can vary widely by character, artwork, set, condition, language, and print details.
Do not use the symbol as a substitute for a current price check. If you are cataloging or insuring a collection, record the exact card name, collector number, set, language, condition, and any special designation in addition to the rarity.
Why foil appearance can be misleading
Scarlet & Violet cards may have parallel-foil patterns around the artwork, and the expansion-code box changed its presentation. The official announcement discusses these production details separately from the rarity classes. A parallel foil or a different-looking code box therefore does not automatically create a new rarity.
Likewise, a card that catches the light is not necessarily Ultra Rare, Illustration Rare, Special Illustration Rare, or Hyper Rare. Compare the printed symbol, its color, and its number of stars with the set legend. Surface wear, strong lighting, sleeves, and camera exposure can all exaggerate foil effects.

How to verify a card when the mark is hard to read
Use the expansion checklist first
Find the set name and collector number, such as “249/198,” then open that expansion’s official checklist. Check the legend and the card’s listed rarity rather than relying on a photograph. This is especially useful when the symbol is partly hidden by a sleeve, damaged, or affected by glare.
Cross-check the official card database
The official database provides a text rarity field that can confirm the category. For example, it lists Arven from Scarlet & Violet, card 249/198, as “Special Illustration Rare.” The database label confirms the classification; it does not imply a universal price or a guaranteed pack frequency.
Compare the card type
If the card is a Pokémon ex or Supporter with full-art artwork, compare it with the classes that officially cover those card types. If it is a standard Pokémon with alternate art, Illustration Rare may be the relevant class. Do not force a match when the set’s own legend uses different terminology.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsOlder Pokémon cards use different systems
The Scarlet & Violet key should not be applied unchanged to every Pokémon TCG era. Earlier sets use historical rarity names, symbols, and letter codes that may not resemble the newer classes. The official card database includes filters such as Rare Holo, Rare Holo EX, Rare Holo GX, Rare Holo Lv.X, Rare Prime, LEGEND, Rare BREAK, Promo, Amazing, Radiant Rare, Shiny Rare, and Shiny Ultra Rare.

An official Black & White card-dex file, for example, defines C as Common, U as Uncommon, R as Rare, H as Rare Holo, and RU as Rare Ultra. Those codes belong to that historical system; they are not alternate spellings of the Scarlet & Violet symbols.
For an older card, identify the expansion and consult that set’s checklist or the official database. A card can be genuinely rare within its era while lacking any of the modern gold-star treatments.
A practical identification workflow
- Record the basics: card name, Pokémon or Trainer type, collector number, set name, and language.
- Locate the mark: inspect the lower information area under neutral light and remove glare from the sleeve if necessary.
- Classify the symbol: distinguish circle, diamond, one black star, two black stars, two shiny stars, one gold star, a gold-and-silver pair, or three gold stars.
- Match the era: determine whether the card belongs to Scarlet & Violet or an earlier series before applying the table above.
- Verify in writing: check the expansion checklist or official database entry and save the textual rarity with your collection record.
- Investigate value separately: only after identification should you research condition, market activity, language, and any grading considerations.
Common mistakes and their fixes
- Mistake: treating every star as the same. Fix: note whether the star is solid black, shiny foil, or shiny gold, and count the stars.
- Mistake: calling a foil card “Ultra Rare” automatically. Fix: require the two shiny foil stars and the matching set legend.
- Mistake: confusing Illustration Rare with Special Illustration Rare. Fix: Illustration Rare covers alternate-art Common, Uncommon, and Rare Pokémon; Special Illustration Rare covers alternate-art Pokémon ex or Supporter cards.
- Mistake: using the modern key on a vintage card. Fix: identify the expansion first and use its historical legend or database record.
- Mistake: assuming rarity predicts price. Fix: treat rarity as an identification field, then perform a separate, date-specific valuation.
- Mistake: reading a photograph instead of the card. Fix: verify the printed mark and collector number under even lighting; online images can distort foil colors.
What the symbol does—and does not—tell you
| Question | What the rarity mark can answer | What it cannot answer by itself |
|---|---|---|
| What category is this card? | Whether it is Common, Uncommon, Rare, Double Rare, Ultra Rare, Illustration Rare, Special Illustration Rare, or Hyper Rare within the applicable system. | Whether an older card uses a different historical category. |
| How scarce is it? | Its publisher-defined rarity class. | An exact print run, pack pull rate, or population figure. |
| What is it worth? | Useful identification data for a later valuation. | A guaranteed price or investment return. |
| Is it powerful in play? | Nothing about tournament strength or deck usefulness. | Competitive legality, strategy, or performance. |
| Is it a special foil? | The symbol can identify the class when read with the color and finish. | Whether every reflective or textured effect represents a separate rarity. |
Organizing a collection by rarity
You can sort a binder by set order, card number, Pokémon, or rarity. If you choose rarity, keep the expansion separate so that a Scarlet & Violet Hyper Rare is not mixed into an older set’s unrelated “secret rare” terminology. A useful label includes the set, collector number, card name, and the exact database wording.
A binder is optional: no purchase is needed to read a rarity symbol. Pokémon’s official Scarlet & Violet—151 product information includes a Binder Collection for collectors who want a dedicated way to organize and browse cards, but the product itself does not change how rarity marks are interpreted.
Scope of this decoder
This article explains the Scarlet & Violet symbol system introduced in the March 30, 2023 announcement. Pokémon has continued to expose many rarity labels in its database, and later expansions may add or present categories differently. Do not describe this table as a complete all-series key through every release. When a later set or an older card does not match, the set-specific checklist and official database entry take priority.
