Choose the original Pokémon Red or Pokémon Blue by the Pokémon you want to catch: the main Kanto adventure is shared, but each game has a different set of version-exclusive encounters. Pick Red for Pokémon such as Growlithe or Scyther; pick Blue for Vulpix or Pinsir. If you want every exclusive on one save, you will need a compatible way to trade with someone who has the other version.
For a 2026 purchase, first decide whether you mean the original Game Boy games or the later remakes. FireRed and LeafGreen are separate games, released as standalone digital software for Switch in February 2026. They are not the original Red and Blue.
What is different between Pokémon Red and Blue?
The original Game Boy games tell substantially the same Kanto story. Their meaningful difference is which Pokémon can appear in each version, including the type and probability of encounters described in the instruction manual. The manual’s concise explanation is: “The differences between the versions are the type and probability of Pokémon appearances.” The versions split 22 Pokémon across their exclusive rosters: 11 exclusive to Red and 11 to Blue, counting evolved forms.
That split matters most if you have favorite Pokémon, want to build a particular team, or hope to complete a collection. If none of the exclusive species is especially important to you and you are playing for the adventure, either version can be a reasonable choice. The decision is not about choosing a different main story; it is about which set of Pokémon you can encounter in your own game.

The table below lists the western versions and includes the exclusive species alongside their evolved forms. It is a practical way to compare the games before buying: scan for your favorite, for a Pokémon you particularly want on a team, or for the species you would like to collect. A species listed on one side is not an exclusive encounter in the other game.
Which Pokémon are exclusive to each version?
The following roster is the western Red and Blue listing. It includes each exclusive species and its evolutions.
| Pokémon Red exclusives | Pokémon Blue exclusives |
|---|---|
| Ekans, Arbok | Sandshrew, Sandslash |
| Oddish, Gloom, Vileplume | Vulpix, Ninetales |
| Mankey, Primeape | Meowth, Persian |
| Growlithe, Arcanine | Bellsprout, Weepinbell, Victreebel |
| Scyther | Magmar |
| Electabuzz | Pinsir |
There are six exclusive groups on each side, but some groups include more evolved forms than others. Each version has 11 exclusive Pokémon when those evolved forms are counted. The count is a count of Pokémon species, not a claim that either game has more exclusives overall.

Some of the clearest comparisons are between related choices: Red has Growlithe and Arcanine while Blue has Vulpix and Ninetales; Red has Scyther while Blue has Pinsir. But do not stop at those headline examples if you have a different favorite. Red’s additional exclusives include Ekans and Arbok, Oddish’s line, Mankey’s line, and Electabuzz. Blue’s additional exclusives include Sandshrew’s line, Meowth’s line, Bellsprout’s line, and Magmar.
Choose by the Pokémon you want on your team
Choose Red for Growlithe, Scyther, or its other exclusives
Red is the more direct fit if you want to catch Growlithe and evolve it into Arcanine, or if Scyther is a must-have. Its other exclusive lines are Ekans and Arbok, Oddish through Vileplume, and Mankey through Primeape; Electabuzz is also exclusive to Red.
If your favorite is an evolved form, check its whole line in the table rather than looking only for the final name. Red is the version with the listed Oddish line through Vileplume, for example, and the one with both Growlithe and Arcanine. The same applies if your collection goal is to have each stage represented: the listed line helps you see which version contains those exclusives.
Choose Blue for Vulpix, Pinsir, or its other exclusives
Blue is the better fit if Vulpix and Ninetales appeal more to you than Growlithe and Arcanine, or you want Pinsir rather than Scyther. Blue also has Sandshrew and Sandslash, Meowth and Persian, the Bellsprout line, and Magmar.

As with Red, decide based on the complete list rather than one comparison alone. If you care about Magmar or Meowth more than the better-known Pinsir-versus-Scyther choice, that preference is enough to point you toward Blue. Its exclusive roster includes both single entries and evolutionary lines.
Use the full roster if you do not have one favorite
Compare the entire list against the team or collection you have in mind rather than choosing by the cover color alone. The version distinction affects encounters, not the overall identity of the adventure. If you are undecided and expect to trade, either game can supply the story experience while a trading partner helps fill the gaps.
A useful way to make the choice is to separate your priorities. If one exclusive is non-negotiable, pick the version that lists it. If you care about several, compare how many are on each side of your personal shortlist. If you have no strong preference, choose based on the shared adventure and treat the exclusive roster as a bonus rather than assuming one version is categorically better.
Will you need to trade?
Trading is necessary if your goal is to have the exclusive species from both games on one save. A Red save will not contain Blue-exclusive Pokémon through its own version-exclusive encounters, and vice versa; you need a compatible trade route and someone with access to the other version. The original games’ version split is therefore a collection decision as much as a favorite-Pokémon decision.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →For a story-focused playthrough, the trade split does not make either version a bad choice. You can choose one game and play its shared Kanto adventure without having the other game. Trading becomes important when your goal expands to collecting species assigned to both rosters or putting an opposite-version exclusive on your save. If you do not have a trading partner or compatible setup, choose with the assumption that the other version’s exclusives may remain out of reach in that playthrough.
Trading support depends on the release and hardware you are using. Nintendo’s official account of the original games’ 3DS Virtual Console releases describes wireless trading and battling there. Do not assume that a feature or connection route for a later remake also applies to the original Game Boy cartridges. Likewise, the local wireless features Nintendo describes for the Switch remakes should not be treated as confirmation of a trading route for original Red and Blue.
Before buying for a completion goal, be specific about what you intend to trade: the games involved, the hardware and release you plan to use, and whether you can access another player with the other version. The available official details establish wireless features for the 3DS releases and local wireless features for the Switch remakes, but they do not establish that every release shares the same compatibility or transfer options.

Do not confuse the original games with the Switch remakes
Pokémon Red and Pokémon Blue are the original Game Boy games. Pokémon FireRed and Pokémon LeafGreen are separate Game Boy Advance remakes from 2004. Nintendo released FireRed and LeafGreen as standalone digital software for Switch in February 2026. They are not the original Game Boy versions under different names.
| What you want | Relevant release | What is established |
|---|---|---|
| The original Kanto games and their Game Boy-era release | Pokémon Red or Pokémon Blue | Originally Game Boy software distributed as Game Pak cartridges. The 3DS versions were released as Virtual Console titles on February 27, 2016; that historical release information does not establish whether they can currently be purchased. |
| A later remake available as Switch software | Pokémon FireRed or Pokémon LeafGreen | Standalone digital Switch software released in February 2026. Nintendo says local wireless trading and battling are supported, a Nintendo Switch Online membership is not required, and online play is not supported. |
These are different versions of the Kanto experience, so make sure the title and platform match what you actually want. If you want the original release, a Switch copy of FireRed or LeafGreen is not a substitute for the original Red or Blue game. If you want the Switch release and its local wireless features, look at the remakes rather than assuming those features belong to the original cartridges.
The 3DS Virtual Console releases are useful historical context, not proof of present-day availability. The Pokémon Singapore product page records that the original games were released for the Nintendo 3DS family on February 27, 2016, but that historical product information does not establish that you can still buy them there now. Nintendo’s Switch FAQ, meanwhile, describes the current remake releases and says Nintendo has nothing to announce about other potential Pokémon titles for Nintendo Classics. That is not a guarantee that original Red and Blue will never be added.
What should you know about trading and Pokémon HOME on Switch?
Nintendo’s FAQ says the Switch releases of FireRed and LeafGreen support local wireless trading and battles, but not online play. It also says a Nintendo Switch Online membership is not required to use those local wireless features. That is the relevant distinction if you are choosing the Switch remakes and expect to trade nearby with another player.
In practical terms, do not buy the Switch remakes expecting online trading or online battles: Nintendo says those functions are unsupported. Local wireless is the supported route described in the FAQ, and a Switch Online membership is not required for it. Those details apply to the Switch versions of FireRed and LeafGreen, not automatically to the Game Boy cartridges or the 3DS Virtual Console releases.

The Pokémon Company announced on October 7, 2026 that FireRed and LeafGreen for Switch could link with Pokémon HOME beginning in October 2026. Pokémon transferred from those remakes can move onward to other games, but cannot return to FireRed or LeafGreen after transfer. This announced HOME feature concerns the Switch remakes; it is not evidence that original Game Boy Red and Blue connect to HOME.
That one-way transfer detail matters if you are planning what to do with a Pokémon after moving it. The announcement says it can continue to other games but cannot be sent back to FireRed or LeafGreen. It does not establish a HOME connection for original Red or Blue, so do not treat the remakes’ connection feature as a reason to expect the same service from an original cartridge.

Nintendo has said it has nothing to announce about other potential Pokémon titles for the Nintendo Classics collections. That is not a promise that the original Red and Blue games will never be added, and it does not establish a current way to buy them through that service.
Buying an original cartridge: what to check
If you specifically want the original Game Boy release, you are looking at a used-market collectible rather than a newly released Switch game. The original manual documents the Game Boy/Game Pak format, but current stock, prices, and the condition or authenticity of any particular listing are not established here.

- Assess the item condition: Read the seller’s description and inspect available photographs for the cartridge and label.
- Check seller protections: Understand the marketplace’s return terms and protections before purchasing.
- Separate listing claims from proof: A product title alone does not verify that a specific cartridge is authentic or in working condition.
These checks are especially important if you are buying for collection value as well as play. No current retailer stock or price is established here, so compare live listings directly rather than relying on a historical price or assuming a cartridge is available. A search for a Pokémon Red Game Boy cartridge or Pokémon Blue Game Boy cartridge can help you find relevant listings, but the words in a listing title do not establish authenticity, condition, price fairness, or whether the item is currently available.
It also helps to decide whether your priority is playing the original release or owning a physical collectible. If you want the original cartridge, inspect the actual listing and its seller terms. If you mainly want a later version of the Kanto experience on Switch, the separate FireRed and LeafGreen digital releases are the relevant products; they are not physical Game Boy cartridges and are not the original games.
A quick decision guide
- Pick Red if Growlithe, Scyther, or another Red-exclusive species is the deciding favorite.
- Pick Blue if Vulpix, Pinsir, or another Blue-exclusive species matters more to you.
- Either original version can work if your priority is the shared Kanto adventure and you do not have a strong preference among the exclusives.
- Plan on trading if you want the exclusive Pokémon from both games on one save; you will need a compatible route and access to the other version.
- Choose FireRed or LeafGreen instead if you want the later remake on Switch, not the original Game Boy release.
How to make the decision before you buy
- Confirm the title and platform. Decide whether you want the original Game Boy Red or Blue, a historical 3DS Virtual Console release, or the 2026 Switch versions of the 2004 remakes.
- Check the exclusive roster. Use the table to identify which version has the Pokémon you most want. The exclusives are divided between the western games, with 11 on each side when evolved forms count.
- Set your collection goal. If one version’s roster is enough, choose that version. If you want both sets on one save, plan for a compatible trade and another player with the opposite version.
- Verify the connection route for the release you choose. Nintendo describes wireless trading and battling for the 3DS releases and local wireless trading and battles for the Switch remakes. The Switch FAQ says no online play and no Switch Online membership requirement for those local features.
- Check the actual purchase listing. For an original cartridge, verify version, region, condition, authenticity claims, and seller protections. Current stock and prices are not established here.
This order avoids two common mistakes: choosing a game before checking its exclusives, and buying a remake when what you wanted was the original release. It also makes the trade question concrete. A favorite-Pokémon choice can be made from the roster; a full-collection plan needs a compatible release and another version to trade with.

Is Pokémon Red or Blue better?
Neither is established as the better game overall. The main Kanto adventure is shared; the meaningful difference is which version-exclusive Pokémon appear. Choose based on the roster you prefer, or either version if you do not have a strong preference.

Which Pokémon are exclusive to Pokémon Blue?
The western Blue exclusives are Sandshrew and Sandslash; Vulpix and Ninetales; Meowth and Persian; Bellsprout, Weepinbell, and Victreebel; Magmar; and Pinsir. That is 11 Pokémon counting evolved forms.
Can I complete the exclusive Pokémon collection with only Red or only Blue?
Not through that version’s own exclusive encounters. To get the exclusive species from both rosters onto one save, you need a compatible way to trade and access to someone with the other version.
Can I trade between the original Red and Blue games?
Trading depends on the release and hardware. Nintendo’s official account of the original games’ 3DS Virtual Console releases describes wireless trading and battling. Do not assume that trading features described for the 3DS or Switch releases automatically apply to original Game Boy cartridges.

Are the Switch games Pokémon Red and Blue?
No. The Switch releases are Pokémon FireRed and Pokémon LeafGreen, standalone digital versions of the 2004 Game Boy Advance remakes released for Switch in February 2026. They are separate from the original Game Boy Red and Blue.
Do FireRed and LeafGreen on Switch support online trading?
No. Nintendo says the Switch remakes support local wireless trading and battles, do not support online play, and do not require a Nintendo Switch Online membership for those local wireless features.
Can original Pokémon Red and Blue connect to Pokémon HOME?
The October 7, 2026 announcement concerns the Switch versions of FireRed and LeafGreen, not the original Game Boy games. It does not establish that original Red and Blue connect to Pokémon HOME.
Can Pokémon transferred from FireRed or LeafGreen on Switch return to those games?
The Pokémon Company’s October 7, 2026 announcement says Pokémon transferred from the Switch remakes can move onward to other games but cannot return to FireRed or LeafGreen after transfer.

The Bottom Line
For the original Game Boy games, choose Red if its exclusive Pokémon appeal more and Blue if you prefer Blue’s roster; the Kanto adventure is substantially the same. If you want both sets of exclusives on one save, plan for a compatible trade with someone who has the other version. For a 2026 Switch purchase, look at FireRed or LeafGreen only if you want the later remakes, not the original Red or Blue.
