Pokémon Pokopia is a Nintendo Switch 2 game. Nintendo does not list the original Nintendo Switch as a system that runs it directly. You can play with friends through local wireless, online Link Play, Cloud Island, or GameShare, but each mode has different hardware, copy, player-count, and subscription requirements.
Online features require internet access and Nintendo Switch Online, while local wireless does not. Nintendo also lists Save Data Cloud for the game. Cloud Island has its own separate, manual backup system with stricter limits.
What you need to play Pokémon Pokopia
Nintendo’s US product listing identifies Nintendo Switch 2 as the required system. It does not list the original Nintendo Switch as a console that can run Pokopia natively. A player who owns only the original Switch can participate in a nearby GameShare session hosted by a Switch 2, but that is a temporary guest session rather than direct support for the older console.
- Required platform: Nintendo Switch 2.
- For online multiplayer: internet access, a Nintendo Account, and Nintendo Switch Online. Nintendo notes that online features are not available in every country.
- For local wireless: multiple consoles and multiple game copies; Nintendo Switch Online is not required.
- For GameShare: one Switch 2 with the game hosts the session. Nearby GameShare can accept either a Switch 2 or an original Switch as the guest console.
- For a game-key card: the complete game download requires an internet connection, and Nintendo says a microSD Express card may be needed depending on available storage.

Ordinary Link Play lets visitors enter a player’s town, while Cloud Island is a separate shared world that can remain available when its creator is away. GameShare is more limited: it is designed for a short shared session and does not give the guest the full set of game interactions.

How local wireless multiplayer works
Local wireless supports two to four players when each player has a compatible console and a copy of the game. The players connect locally rather than through Nintendo’s online service.
What visitors can do
In Palette Town, visitors can help the host build. In other towns, visitors cannot change the terrain. Nintendo’s support guidance also says challenge progress and rewards go to the host, so joining another player’s town does not create an independent copy of that town’s progression for every participant.
How to start
- Continue playing until the Link Play menu becomes available. Nintendo says this generally takes about 30 minutes and requires raising the Environment Level to 2.
- Open the Link Play option from the in-game menu.
- Choose the local connection option and have the other players join from their consoles.
- Confirm that every console is running the same software version before attempting to connect.
How online multiplayer works
Online Link Play supports one to four players with multiple games and consoles. Every participant needs internet access, and Nintendo requires a Nintendo Switch Online membership for online features. A Nintendo Account is also required for online services. Nintendo’s product information warns that online features can vary by country.

Online visitors can join friends’ worlds. The Pokémon Company International’s June 22, 2026 guide explains that friends can help build in Palette Town. In other areas, visitors are placed in Spectator Mode rather than receiving the same building authority.

Version matching is mandatory
Nintendo’s update guidance lists Ver. 2.0.1, released September 7, 2026, and says this update is needed for internet features. Nintendo’s wording is explicit: “All players must be using the same version of the software to play together.” If one player cannot join, check for a pending update on every console before changing network settings.
Cloud Island: the persistent shared world
Cloud Island is different from visiting a friend’s ordinary town. It is an online island that can remain available even when the island’s owner is not playing. Each player can create only one Cloud Island.
Shared progress and separate belongings
- Islanders share the island’s Pokédex.
- Islanders share challenge progress and rewards connected to that island.
- Each player’s bag remains separate from the bag used in their own town.
- Only the player who created an island can make a backup of that island.
These rules mean Cloud Island collaboration does not merge every part of the participants’ individual saves. Shared island achievements and personal-town belongings remain distinct.

GameShare allows up to two players to use one game hosted from a Switch 2. There are two forms:

Nearby GameShare
The host starts GameShare on a Switch 2, and a nearby guest joins from either a Switch 2 or an original Nintendo Switch. The guest’s access lasts only for the session. It does not install Pokopia as a native original-Switch game or grant permanent ownership.
GameShare through GameChat
Nintendo’s listing describes GameChat-based GameShare as a two-player feature requiring Nintendo Switch 2 and GameChat for each participating user. Internet access, Nintendo Switch Online, and Nintendo Account requirements apply to online features. Because this is session-based sharing, the guest does not retain access after the session ends.
Guest restrictions
GameShare guests can use the host’s available moves, but Nintendo says their interactions may be limited. The Pokémon Company International’s guide specifically says guests can assist with terraforming but cannot craft or use the PC. Treat GameShare as a way to play together briefly, not as a replacement for owning the game.
Unlocking GameShare
Nintendo’s support guide says GameShare requires access to Palette Town. The initial progression includes attracting Hitmonchan and learning Rock Smash. If the GameShare option is missing, advance the story through those steps and confirm that the Link Play menu has also unlocked.

Save Data Cloud versus Cloud Island backups
Nintendo lists Save Data Cloud for Pokopia. That service requires Nintendo Switch Online. The listing establishes that cloud-backed save support exists, but it should not be read as a promise that every save, island state, or console-transfer scenario behaves identically. Follow Nintendo’s current transfer and restoration instructions for those operations.
Cloud Island backup is a separate in-game feature. Nintendo Support gives these rules:
- The player must create the backup manually.
- Backups are not made automatically.
- Only one Cloud Island backup can be stored at a time.
- A player can back up only an island they created.
- Restoring a Cloud Island backup is limited to once per day.
A Cloud Island backup therefore protects the shared island under its own schedule and storage limit; it is not the same thing as ordinary Save Data Cloud for the game.
Recommended setup paths
Playing together in the same home
- Give each player a compatible console and game copy if you are using local wireless Link Play.
- Update every console to the same software version.
- Reach Environment Level 2 and unlock Link Play, which Nintendo estimates at roughly 30 minutes of play.
- Choose local wireless and have the other players join.
- Use Palette Town when visitors need to help build; expect observation or terrain restrictions in other towns.
Playing with friends over the internet
- Ensure every participant has internet access, a Nintendo Account, and Nintendo Switch Online.
- Install the same Pokopia update on all consoles.
- Open Link Play and select the online connection option.
- Invite or join the intended friend session.
- For longer-term cooperation, use Cloud Island rather than treating every visit to a personal town as shared progression.
Sharing one copy nearby
- Use a Switch 2 that owns the game as the host.
- Progress far enough to access Palette Town and complete the stated GameShare unlock steps.
- Start nearby GameShare from the host console.
- Let one guest join from a Switch 2 or original Switch.
- Remember that the guest session ends when the GameShare session ends and that crafting, PC use, and other interactions may be restricted.
Troubleshooting common multiplayer problems
“The game will not connect online”
- Check that every participant has Nintendo Switch Online and internet access.
- Install the current update on every console; Nintendo specifically identifies Ver. 2.0.1 as required for internet features in its September 7, 2026 guidance.
- Confirm that all players are on exactly the same software version.
- Check regional availability, because Nintendo says online features are not offered in every country.
“The Link Play menu is missing”
Continue the opening progression until approximately 30 minutes have passed and the Environment Level reaches 2. Link Play is not available immediately from a new save.

“My original Switch cannot start Pokopia”
That is expected under Nintendo’s platform listing. The original Switch is supported only as a guest in a nearby GameShare session hosted by a Switch 2; it is not listed as a system that runs Pokopia directly.
“My friend cannot build in my town”
Move the activity to Palette Town. Nintendo says visitors can help build there, while visitors in other towns cannot change terrain. In some GameShare activities, guests have additional restrictions, including no crafting or PC access.
“Our Cloud Island progress is missing”
Check whether the island was manually backed up. Cloud Island backups are not automatic, only one backup can be retained, and only the creator can make it. Also distinguish island data from each player’s separate bag and personal-town save information.

- Choose local wireless when everyone is nearby and owns a copy. It supports up to four players without Nintendo Switch Online.
- Choose online Link Play for ordinary friend visits over the internet. It supports up to four players but requires Nintendo Switch Online and matching software versions.
- Choose Cloud Island when you want a shared island that remains available beyond a single visit, with shared island challenges and rewards.
- Choose nearby GameShare when only one person owns the game and you want a short session for two players. An original Switch can join this specific arrangement as a guest.
- Choose GameChat GameShare only when the participants meet Nintendo’s Switch 2, GameChat, account, internet, and Nintendo Switch Online requirements.

Nintendo’s online-service availability and membership terms can differ by country, so verify the local Nintendo listing before purchasing or planning an online session.
If you buy the Nintendo Switch 2 game-key card edition, Nintendo says a full download is required. Depending on free storage, a microSD Express card may be necessary; Nintendo does not state that every buyer needs one or prescribe a universal capacity in the cited information.
