Pokémon Pokopia is the complete base game; the Expansion Pass is optional paid DLC that cannot be played by itself. If you are new to the game and already want the extra towns, Pokémon, and decorating content, buy the game-and-pass bundle. If you already own Pokémon Pokopia, decide whether the announced three-part content—starting with the underwater Bubbly Basin area—is worth adding. Do not buy the pass merely for Dive: Dive is included in a free update for every game owner.
The short answer
Your ownership status determines the sensible purchase. A new player is choosing between the base game and a bundle containing both the game and its Expansion Pass. An existing owner is choosing between keeping the base game and adding the pass. These are not competing editions of the same software: the pass is downloadable content, while the bundle is simply a combined purchase.
- Buy Pokémon Pokopia alone if you want the core Nintendo Switch 2 life-simulation game, want to try it before committing to extra content, or prefer to decide about DLC later.
- Buy the Expansion Pass if you already own the full game and specifically want Bubbly Basin, its additional Pokémon and furniture, the Ditto outfit, and the two later pass parts as they arrive.
- Buy the game-and-pass bundle if you do not own the game and already know you want all announced pass content.
The official Nintendo listings describe the physical release as a game-key card and also list a digital edition. Choose the format that suits your console setup and purchasing habits; the DLC still requires ownership of the full game.

Pokémon Pokopia: the base game
Pokémon Pokopia is a Nintendo Switch 2 life-simulation game released on March 5, 2026. Nintendo lists it as a standalone game in both a physical game-key-card version and a digital edition. The base game is the foundation for every other option: it provides the main world and is required before Expansion Pass content can be used. See Nintendo’s official game listing for the current edition and regional availability: Pokémon Pokopia for Nintendo Switch 2.

Pokémon Pokopia Expansion Pass: paid DLC
The Expansion Pass is a three-part add-on, not a second game. Nintendo’s product notice states, “Full version of game required to use DLC for that game. Sold separately unless otherwise noted.” Buying the pass by itself therefore makes sense only when the Nintendo account or console already has the full game. The pass covers Part 1, Bubbly Basin, plus Parts 2 and 3 when those parts are released. The official listing is Nintendo’s Pokémon Pokopia Expansion Pass page.
Game-and-Expansion-Pass bundle
The bundle combines the complete base game with the three-part pass in one purchase. It is the straightforward choice for a first-time buyer who has already decided to get the additional content. It does not represent a different gameplay edition, and it does not make the pass standalone; it simply supplies both required components together.
US price comparison
The following are Nintendo of America list prices observed on October 13, 2026. They are US prices, before tax, and can change. Do not apply them to another country’s eShop or assume a retailer will use the same figure.
| Purchase | What you receive | US list price | Who it suits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pokémon Pokopia | Base Nintendo Switch 2 game; physical game-key card or digital edition listed | $69.99 | New players who want the core game or want to postpone DLC |
| Expansion Pass | Three-part paid DLC; full game required | $34.99 | People who already own the base game and want the pass content |
| Game + Expansion Pass bundle | Base game plus all three announced pass parts | $104.99 | New players who already want both |
At those listed US prices, buying the game and pass separately totals the same $104.99 as the bundle, before tax or any retailer-specific difference. The bundle is therefore about convenience and certainty, not an advertised discount. Check the live listing immediately before paying because Nintendo can change regional prices, promotions, or product availability.
What the Expansion Pass adds
Three parts released over time
The Pokémon Company International announced that the pass is divided into three parts. Part 1 is available as Bubbly Basin. Nintendo describes Part 2 as adding further features and Part 3 as introducing another town. Detailed feature lists for those unreleased parts have not been announced, so a purchase decision should be based on the content that is confirmed rather than on speculation.

Part 1: Bubbly Basin
Bubbly Basin is an underwater area designed as a new town to explore, decorate, and build. The announcement identifies sea-dwelling Pokémon, additional themed furniture, and a new Ditto outfit as part of this paid content. Access is tied to progress in the main game: the official guidance refers to progression in Bleak Beach, the ability to jump, and the relevant Surf and Dive prerequisites. Owning the pass does not bypass those in-game requirements; you still need to reach the point where the area becomes available.
Because Bubbly Basin is the first substantial area named for the pass, it is the clearest reason an existing owner might buy the DLC now. Players who mainly enjoy expanding settlements, collecting additional Pokémon, or decorating with new themes are more likely to value it than players satisfied with the base game’s existing areas.

Dive is a free update, not a pass-exclusive move
Nintendo and Pokémon announced Dive through a free software update available to all Pokémon Pokopia owners, including people who do not purchase the Expansion Pass. The move may be needed for progression toward underwater exploration, but the ability itself is not a paid-pass benefit. Treat Bubbly Basin and its added content—not access to Dive—as the value proposition when comparing the products.
Parts 2 and 3 are forthcoming
The remaining pass parts arrive over time. Nintendo’s product information has described Part 2 as late 2026 and Part 3 as coming in 2027, while a Nintendo store search result displayed more specific future dates of March 31, 2027, and September 30, 2027. Because those statements are not identical and release schedules can change, rely on the date currently shown on Nintendo’s product page in your region rather than treating either future date as guaranteed. No detailed feature promises beyond the additional features for Part 2 and another town for Part 3 should be assumed.
Purchase bonuses and their deadlines
The June 9, 2026 announcement described an in-game recipe for dynamic Ditto print blocks and wallpaper, plus an email code for 30 rare Pokémetal ingots. Nintendo’s pass page says the code must be redeemed by August 31, 2027, and the reward must be claimed by September 30, 2027. The same notice says the ingots can also be obtained through normal gameplay, so the bonus is an extra convenience rather than exclusive progression. Confirm the current regional eligibility and redemption terms at checkout; time-limited bonuses can expire even while the DLC remains available.

Which option fits your situation?
You do not own Pokémon Pokopia
Start by deciding whether the announced pass content is important to you now. The base game is the lower-commitment route: you receive the complete core experience and can evaluate its building, decorating, and life-simulation systems before buying additional content. The bundle is the simpler route if you already know that Bubbly Basin’s underwater town, extra Pokémon, furniture, Ditto outfit, and future parts match how you plan to play.
Since the US list total for separate purchases matches the listed bundle total, there is no stated price penalty for waiting to buy the pass later at those prices. However, a future sale, regional promotion, or price change could alter that calculation. A buyer who values flexibility can begin with the base game; a buyer who wants every announced part from the outset can choose the bundle.
You already own the base game
Your choice is narrower: continue with the base game or add the pass. Focus on whether Bubbly Basin’s new environment, sea-dwelling Pokémon, themed furniture, and Ditto outfit justify the pass-only price in your region. The later parts are included in the pass, but their detailed content is not yet fully described. If you dislike buying content before all of its parts are available, wait until more information is published; if you want the first area now and are comfortable with staged releases, the pass provides that option.
You are unsure whether you will keep playing
Choose the base game first. Nothing in the announced pass is required to start the core game, and Dive is distributed through the free update. You can reassess after experiencing the base world and reaching the progression point associated with underwater access. This approach also avoids paying for future parts whose exact features and release timing may change.
You care about physical media
Nintendo’s listed physical product is a game-key card rather than a conventional cartridge containing the full game data. Nintendo also lists a digital edition. Verify the current packaging and regional terms before purchase, especially if your decision depends on collecting physical releases, sharing a card, or managing console storage. The Expansion Pass itself is downloadable content and does not replace the need for the base game.

A practical buying checklist
- Confirm your console. The products discussed here are for Nintendo Switch 2. Do not assume a listing for another Switch model is interchangeable.
- Check ownership. If the full game is not already attached to your purchase, the pass alone is incomplete. New buyers should compare the standalone game with the game-and-pass bundle.
- Set your region. Use the eShop or Nintendo store for your country. The dollar figures in the table are US list prices observed on October 13, 2026, not a global price promise.
- Decide how much confirmed content you need. Bubbly Basin is the named available area. Parts 2 and 3 are included but arrive later, and their detailed features remain limited in the official descriptions.
- Separate free and paid features. Dive comes from the free update. Pay for the pass because you want its areas, Pokémon, furniture, outfit, and future parts—not because you believe the move itself is locked behind DLC.
- Review format and terms. Select the physical game-key card or digital base game according to your preference, then read the live pass page for bonus eligibility, redemption deadlines, and any regional restrictions.
- Save your receipt and check release information. For staged DLC, keep the purchase record and revisit Nintendo’s product page for updated Part 2 and Part 3 timing.
Decision examples
| Your situation | Most logical purchase | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| First Pokémon Pokopia purchase; you want to explore before buying DLC | Base game | Provides the core game while keeping the later DLC decision open. |
| First purchase; you already want Bubbly Basin and future parts | Game-and-pass bundle | Supplies the required game and all three announced pass parts together. |
| You own the game and want the underwater town now | Expansion Pass | Adds Bubbly Basin and its announced Pokémon, furniture, and Ditto outfit. |
| You own the game but are interested only in Dive | No pass required | Dive is part of the free update available to all owners. |
| You avoid buying unreleased content | Base game for now | Parts 2 and 3 are forthcoming and their detailed features are not fully stated. |
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Assuming the pass includes the game
It does not. The pass is DLC and requires the full version. A new player who buys only the pass still needs Pokémon Pokopia. Select the bundle or buy the base game separately.
Treating the bundle as a discounted edition
Nintendo’s observed US list prices add to the same amount whether purchased separately or as the bundle. Any advantage is convenience and having the pass secured, not a confirmed saving. Recheck the live prices because promotions can change that relationship.
Paying for Dive by mistake
Dive is distributed in a free update. If underwater exploration is your only reason for considering DLC, check whether you actually want Bubbly Basin’s paid town and associated items. The move alone is not evidence that the pass is necessary.
Expecting immediate access to Bubbly Basin
The pass does not remove progression gates. Official guidance links access to progress in Bleak Beach, the ability to jump, and Surf/Dive requirements. Continue the relevant main-game progression if the area is not available after purchase.

Missing a bonus-code deadline
The announced Pokémetal code has separate redemption and reward-claim deadlines. If you buy for the bonus, read the current terms, ensure Nintendo has a valid email address where required, and redeem before the listed dates. The ingots are also described as obtainable through normal gameplay, so an expired code does not remove the underlying DLC.
Applying US prices to another country
Regional eShop prices, taxes, currencies, promotions, and release formats can differ. Use the Nintendo listing for the account’s country and treat the US table only as a reference for the American market.
Bottom line for each buyer
New buyer: choose the base game if you want to start cautiously; choose the bundle if the confirmed Bubbly Basin content and the promise of two later parts already fit your plans. At Nintendo’s observed US list prices, buying both separately totals the same as the bundle.

Existing owner: buy the Expansion Pass for its paid content, beginning with Bubbly Basin, not for Dive. Keep playing the base game if the announced additions do not justify the pass-only cost or if you prefer to wait for more details about Parts 2 and 3.
Any buyer: verify the current regional listing, remember that the physical version is a game-key card, and treat bonus availability and future release timing as conditions that can change.
