Pokémon Heart & Soul is not a second official version of HeartGold or SoulSilver. It is an unofficial Game Boy Advance ROM hack that reworks the Johto adventure and a Kanto postgame in a Gen 3-style format. Its creators draw on Gold, Silver, Crystal, HeartGold and SoulSilver, but they deliberately change progression, encounters, facilities, customization and quality-of-life systems. HeartGold and SoulSilver remain the official Nintendo DS remakes; Heart & Soul is a separate fan project with its own design decisions.
The fundamental difference: official DS remakes versus a fan-made GBA project
The names invite a direct version comparison, but the projects occupy different categories. Pokémon HeartGold and Pokémon SoulSilver are the official DS remakes of the Johto games. Pokémon Heart & Soul is an independently made ROM hack designed to feel like a Gen 3-era game while revisiting the same broad region and adventure. The Heart & Soul project describes those official games as inspirations, not as a specification that it must reproduce exactly.
That distinction affects everything else: graphics and technical limits, how the story is arranged, which systems are included, how encounters are selected, how the game is obtained and whether a save from one release can be carried into another. A player choosing between them is not selecting two editions of one release. The choice is between an official remake experience and a fan-designed reinterpretation of Johto.

| Comparison point | Pokémon Heart & Soul | Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver |
|---|---|---|
| Status | Unofficial fan project and ROM hack. | Official Nintendo DS remakes. |
| Technical style | Game Boy Advance-style, using a Gen 3 foundation. | Official DS remake format. |
| Creative relationship | Draws from Gold, Silver, Crystal, HeartGold and SoulSilver, then makes its own choices. | The official remake experience that Heart & Soul cites as an inspiration. |
| World structure | Johto journey plus a Kanto postgame, arranged within the project’s own progression. | Use the official remake structure rather than the fan project’s altered progression. |
| Distribution | The project says it supplies a UPS patch rather than a complete Pokémon ROM. | Official game products for Nintendo DS. |
Because the project is not intended as a one-to-one copy, a feature found in one game should not be assumed to appear in the other. The most reliable way to understand Heart & Soul is to treat it as a new route through familiar material, not as an unofficial port of the DS releases.
#1 Best Overall
What the two experiences share
A Johto-based adventure
Heart & Soul revisits the Johto adventure associated with the earlier games and the official remakes. The project also includes a Kanto postgame. Those shared destinations explain why the titles are easy to confuse, but they do not mean that every route, event or milestone occurs in the same order.
Different choices inside a familiar framework
The project’s own materials emphasize that progression and features differ intentionally. A player who already knows the official remakes may recognize the setting and broad journey while encountering different access rules, encounters, customization options or quality-of-life behavior. Familiarity with HeartGold or SoulSilver is useful context, not a guarantee that a walkthrough will remain accurate.
Inspiration is not compatibility
Heart & Soul’s connection to the official games is creative rather than technical. It does not turn a HeartGold or SoulSilver save into a Heart & Soul save, and it does not establish that DS accessories, files or game data can be used with the GBA-style project. Each title should be treated as a separate game.

Customization and newer mechanics
Project materials list customization and modern mechanics among Heart & Soul’s features. These systems are part of the project’s attempt to give a Gen 3-style game conveniences and options associated with more recent Pokémon design. The exact implementation belongs to Heart & Soul; the project does not present it as a feature-for-feature copy of HeartGold or SoulSilver.
For players, the practical implication is that Heart & Soul can feel less rigid than a classic Gen 3 game. Before beginning, read the project’s feature and player documentation so you know which options are enabled by default and which are optional. A familiar story premise does not tell you how its customization or modern mechanics work.

Following Pokémon
Following Pokémon is explicitly listed as a Heart & Soul feature. It is therefore one of the project’s visible departures from a straightforward recreation of an older GBA adventure. Do not infer that the way a Pokémon follows, where it appears or what interactions are available will match the official DS remakes; the project’s documentation is the authority for its implementation.
Day-and-night encounters
Heart & Soul also lists day/night encounters. This means the time context can affect which Pokémon a player encounters, making the time of an outing part of encounter planning. When a desired Pokémon does not appear, check the project’s encounter documentation and the relevant in-game time rather than assuming the species was removed or that the game is malfunctioning.
Randomizer and challenge settings
Randomizer and challenge settings are named project features. They make Heart & Soul suitable for more than one kind of playthrough: a player can pursue a more unpredictable run or add constraints for a harder challenge. These options also make guides, screenshots and team advice less transferable between players, because two saves can be configured differently from the start.
Use a deliberate setup process. Decide whether you want the standard experience, a randomized run or a challenge configuration before starting, then record the choice with your save notes. If you later compare progress with someone else, include the settings; otherwise, differences in encounters or difficulty may look like version errors when they are simply configuration choices.
Facilities and item systems that are specifically different
No Pokéathlon Dome
Heart & Soul does not include the Pokéathlon Dome. The project’s feature information identifies this as an intentional omission, not an unfinished menu that can be unlocked through a hidden condition. If you are looking for the Pokéathlon activity associated with the official remakes, you will not find that facility in Heart & Soul.

- Precise fit: Specially designed for Nintendo DS NTSC version consoles, it perfectly matches the cartridge cases of Heartgold and Soulsilver games, providing all-around fit protection against scratches and bumps during transportation or daily storage
- Dual Protection: Each set contains two protective cases, which can store two game cartridges at the same time. Made of high-strength plastic material, the cases are rugged and have good impact resistance, which can effectively resist external pressure and impact to ensure the safety of the items inside the case
- Simple design: The appearance design is simple and generous, with transparent as the main color, which is convenient for players to quickly identify the games inside the box. At the same time, the thin and lightweight design will not take up too much space, whether it is placed on the bookshelf, drawer or carry out, it is very convenient
- Dust and Moisture Resistant: The tightly fitting lid design effectively blocks dust, water vapor and other contaminants from entering the case, preventing the quality of the game cartridge and the box from being affected by moisture or dust, and prolonging its service life
- NTSC only: This case is only suitable for NTSC version of Nintendo DS, customized for the size and specifications of this version of the console to ensure the best fit and provide exclusive protection for users of specific versions of the console
Battle Frontier and Battle Tents instead
In place of the Pokéathlon Dome, the project points to the Emerald Battle Frontier and Battle Tents. This substitution changes the type of optional content available after or alongside the main adventure. Players interested in repeatable battle challenges should plan around those facilities rather than searching Johto for a Pokéathlon building.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Berries replace Apricorns for Kurt’s custom Poké Balls
Heart & Soul replaces Apricorns with berries for Kurt’s custom Poké Balls. The underlying idea—bringing materials to Kurt for specialized balls—remains recognizable, but the collection loop is different. An Apricorn-focused guide written for HeartGold or SoulSilver should not be followed literally in Heart & Soul; look for the project’s berry requirements and any timing or availability rules in its documentation.
| System or facility | Heart & Soul | What this means for a player familiar with HeartGold/SoulSilver |
|---|---|---|
| Pokéathlon Dome | Not included. | Do not expect to unlock or visit the official remake’s Pokéathlon facility. |
| Optional battle content | Emerald Battle Frontier and Battle Tents are identified by the project. | Look for those activities instead of Pokéathlon events. |
| Kurt’s custom Poké Balls | Berries replace Apricorns as the material named by the project. | Use Heart & Soul’s item instructions; Apricorn routes from the DS games may mislead you. |
| Following Pokémon | Listed as a project feature. | Expect a project-specific implementation, not assumed DS parity. |
| Day/night encounters | Listed as a project feature. | Check time-dependent encounter information when hunting Pokémon. |
| Randomizer and challenge tools | Listed as project options. | Document your settings because they can change the run’s behavior. |
Story and progression: what to expect
The broad route is recognizable
The presence of Johto and a Kanto postgame gives Heart & Soul a recognizable arc for players who know the official games. You can approach it with expectations about the setting and overall adventure, but not with the assumption that every badge, encounter, rival event or postgame gate appears in the same sequence.
The order of events can be project-specific
Heart & Soul’s documentation says that features and progression differ intentionally. That qualification matters when using external walkthroughs. A guide for HeartGold or SoulSilver may point to an item, facility or route that exists in a different place, becomes available at another point or has been replaced entirely. Treat any imported guide as background context and verify each step against the project’s player documentation.
Kanto is a postgame component
The project describes Kanto as a postgame area. That tells you the region is part of the extended adventure rather than the initial Johto route. It does not, by itself, establish that every Kanto location, encounter table or event matches the official remakes. Use the project’s own progression information for unlock conditions and available content.

How Heart & Soul is obtained
The project distributes a patch, not a complete Pokémon ROM
The official FAQ and disclaimer state that the project site provides a UPS patch rather than distributing a complete Pokémon ROM. That is the practical distinction a prospective player needs to understand before downloading anything: the patch is an update applied to a compatible base file, not a ready-to-play copy supplied by the project.
Because the project does not provide a complete ROM, the exact patching workflow depends on the platform and the UPS-compatible patching software you use. In general, the process has these stages:
- Read the project’s current instructions. Confirm the required base version, patch format and any platform-specific notes before changing files.
- Use a legitimately obtained base game file where applicable. The project’s disclaimer makes clear that it is a fan project and is not affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by the relevant rights holders. The project materials do not settle jurisdiction-specific questions about ROM ownership or use, so do not treat a patching guide as legal advice.
- Keep the original file untouched. Make a working copy for patching so that you can retry if the patch fails or you select the wrong base.
- Apply the UPS patch with compatible software. Select the base file and the project’s patch exactly as the project instructions describe. A patch failure commonly indicates an incompatible base, a damaged download or a mismatch between the patch and the game version.
- Launch the patched result in a compatible environment. Follow the project’s player documentation for supported hardware or emulation settings rather than assuming that every GBA-capable environment behaves identically.
- Keep version and save notes. Record the Heart & Soul version used and back up the save before installing a later release.
Do not download a file advertised as an “official Heart & Soul ROM.” The project describes itself as a fan-made patch project, and the official remakes are separate Nintendo DS products.

Release listed by the project
The project homepage lists Pokémon Heart & Soul v2.0.4 as released on August 28, 2026. That date identifies the release shown in the project’s own materials; it is not a promise that no later build exists. Check the project’s current release notes and FAQ before starting a new run.
The important save rule
The FAQ says that saves made before v2.0 are not compatible with v2.0.4. It also says that saves created on v2.0.0 remain compatible with v2.0.4. In practical terms, a player moving from any pre-v2.0 build should plan for a new save rather than assuming that the old file will load safely.
Best Value
- Package includes an Action Replay DS cartridge
- The Action Replay DS cartridge will be updated to the latest firmware if possible and loaded with 1000s of codes. The codes will include codes for most of the Pokemon DS games including: Pokemon Diamond, Pearl, Platinum, HeartGold, and SoulSilver
- The Action Replay DS cartridge is compatible with the Nintendo DS Lite and DS consoles
- Please note that the USB cable, box, or CD-ROM are NOT included
| Existing save | Moving to v2.0.4 | Recommended action |
|---|---|---|
| Created before v2.0 | Not compatible according to the FAQ. | Start a new save and retain the old file as an archival backup. |
| Created on v2.0.0 | Compatible according to the FAQ. | Back up the save, then follow the project’s upgrade instructions. |
| Created on another or later build | Not stated in the cited FAQ information. | Check the latest release notes before upgrading. |
Never overwrite the only copy of a working save when changing versions. Compatibility is a project-level rule, not a property inherited from HeartGold or SoulSilver, so a DS save cannot substitute for a compatible Heart & Soul save.
Which game should you choose?
Choose Heart & Soul when you want a redesigned Johto run
- You want a GBA-style presentation and are comfortable with a fan-made project.
- You like the idea of customization, following Pokémon, day/night encounters and optional randomizer or challenge settings.
- You prefer project-specific changes over a strictly faithful remake.
- You are willing to patch a game and manage version-specific saves.
- You want Battle Frontier and Battle Tent content rather than the Pokéathlon Dome.
- You are prepared to use berries, not Apricorns, for Kurt’s custom Poké Balls.
Choose HeartGold or SoulSilver when you want the official remake
- You want the official Nintendo DS releases rather than an unofficial reinterpretation.
- You prefer the remake experience itself, without relying on a UPS patch or fan-project documentation.
- You specifically want the facilities and item systems that Heart & Soul replaces, including the Pokéathlon Dome and Apricorn-based custom-ball process.
- You need your expectations, guides and game data to correspond to the official DS releases rather than a modified progression.
Choose based on systems, not only on the map
Both choices can appeal to someone who wants to revisit Johto, but the reasons are different. The official games offer the established remake experience. Heart & Soul offers experimentation: modernized options inside a Gen 3-style project, changed encounters and a deliberately different set of activities. If the feature differences matter more to you than the shared setting, decide from the matrix below.
| If your priority is… | Better fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Official status and a Nintendo DS release | HeartGold or SoulSilver | Heart & Soul is explicitly an unofficial fan project. |
| GBA-style play | Heart & Soul | It is built around a Gen 3-style foundation. |
| Unchanged access to the Pokéathlon Dome | HeartGold or SoulSilver | The project says Heart & Soul does not include it. |
| Battle Frontier and Battle Tents in this project | Heart & Soul | Those are the alternatives identified by the project. |
| Berry-based materials for Kurt’s custom Poké Balls | Heart & Soul | The project replaces Apricorns with berries. |
| Randomizer or challenge settings | Heart & Soul | Those options are listed among its features. |
| A patch-free starting point | HeartGold or SoulSilver | Heart & Soul is distributed as a UPS patch rather than a complete ROM. |
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Assuming the title means an official third edition
Heart & Soul is not an official Pokémon release and is not a renamed or combined version of HeartGold and SoulSilver. Confirm the project’s fan-made status before downloading or discussing it as though it were a Nintendo product.
Following a DS walkthrough without checking changes
Shared geography does not guarantee shared progression. Verify encounter locations, item requirements and facility access in Heart & Soul’s documentation, especially when a guide mentions the Pokéathlon Dome or Apricorns.
Carrying over an old save without checking its version
The FAQ’s pre-v2.0 restriction is easy to miss. Identify the version that created your save before upgrading to v2.0.4, and make a backup first.
Expecting every modern feature to be mandatory
The project lists several optional or configurable systems, including randomizer and challenge settings. Read the setup instructions so you know which choices affect your run; otherwise, you may mistake a deliberate configuration for a bug.
Confusing a patch with a complete game file
A UPS patch requires the compatible base file and patching process described by the project. A file that claims to be a complete official ROM does not match the project’s stated distribution model.

HeartGold and SoulSilver are the official Nintendo DS remakes. Heart & Soul is an unofficial GBA-style fan project that borrows the Johto-and-Kanto premise while changing progression, encounters, customization and optional content. It adds features such as following Pokémon, day/night encounters, randomizer and challenge settings; removes the Pokéathlon Dome; substitutes the Emerald Battle Frontier and Battle Tents; and uses berries instead of Apricorns for Kurt’s custom Poké Balls. Pick the official remakes for the established DS experience, or choose Heart & Soul when you specifically want a customized, project-driven reinterpretation and are prepared to patch it and observe its save-version rules.
