Keep a Pokémon when it serves a collection, battle, evolution, or personal goal; transfer duplicates and unwanted catches only after checking their status and appraisal. Transfer immediately frees a storage slot and gives Candy, but it is permanent. Appraisal shows stars and separate Attack, Defense, and HP assessments; powering up raises CP and HP but does not improve that appraisal. When the box is full, your two documented choices are to transfer Pokémon or buy a storage upgrade in the in-game Shop.
Start with the decision, not the species
There is no universal keep list that works for every Pokémon GO account. A collector may value a costume, regional form, high individual appraisal, or a personal favorite. A battler may be saving a Pokémon for a particular team. Another player may simply need room for the next event. The official mechanics explain what transfer, appraisal, and power-ups do, but they do not establish one species list, appraisal cutoff, or competitive ranking that everyone should follow.
Before touching the transfer button, assign the Pokémon a purpose:

- Battle value: Do you intend to use it in a battle team, and have you checked its appraisal before investing resources?
- Evolution plan: Are you holding it for a planned evolution or another personal milestone?
- Resource value: Would its Candy be more useful than the storage slot it occupies?
- Personal value: Is it a favorite, a memorable catch, or your current Buddy?
These are decision prompts rather than game rules. The correct answer is the one that matches the way you play.

What transfer does—and why the final check matters
Transferring sends a Pokémon out of your collection, frees one storage slot, and awards Candy associated with that Pokémon’s evolution family. The Pokémon GO Help Center’s warning is unambiguous: “You’ll receive Candy in exchange for transferring a Pokémon, but be careful: you can’t get Pokémon back after you’ve transferred them.” Treat the confirmation screen as a permanent deletion step, not as a reversible cleanup action.
Statuses that block a single transfer
Before selecting Transfer for one Pokémon, check whether it is protected or otherwise ineligible. A single Pokémon cannot be transferred while it is:
- Your active Buddy
- Marked as a favorite
- Currently defending a Gym
Remove the relevant status first if you genuinely intend to transfer it. If you did not mean to remove that protection, leave the Pokémon in storage and choose another candidate.
Extra safeguards for bulk transfer
Bulk transfer has stricter rules than transferring one Pokémon at a time. The documented safeguards include:

- Shiny Pokémon cannot be bulk transferred.
- Lucky Pokémon cannot be bulk transferred.
- Pokémon at Good Buddy level or higher cannot be bulk transferred.
- Bulk transfer of Legendary or Mythical Pokémon requires the appropriate setting to be enabled first.
- Some specific Legendary and Mythical Pokémon cannot be selected for transfer at all.
If a Pokémon does not appear in a bulk selection, do not assume the app is malfunctioning. Its species, rarity, or relationship status may be the reason. Review those exceptions individually instead of trying to force a bulk action.
A safe storage-cleanup workflow
Use this sequence whenever you need room. It deliberately separates evaluation from the irreversible action.
- Define the purpose. Decide whether the candidate is being kept for collection, battle, evolution, or personal value. If you cannot name a reason to keep it, place it on a review list rather than transferring immediately.
- Appraise before investing. Open the Pokémon’s appraisal and record the star rating plus the individual Attack, Defense, and HP assessments. Do this before spending Stardust or Candy.
- Inspect protection states. Check the favorite marker, active Buddy status, and Gym-defender status. For bulk cleanup, also account for Shiny, Lucky, Good Buddy-or-higher, Legendary, and Mythical restrictions.
- Separate certain transfers from uncertain ones. Duplicates with no collection or gameplay purpose can be placed in a transfer batch. Rare, unusual, sentimental, or potentially useful Pokémon should remain outside that batch until you have made a deliberate choice.
- Confirm the irreversible action. Re-read the selected Pokémon and the confirmation prompt. Once transferred, it cannot be recovered.
- Choose how to handle future capacity. If you still need more room after cleanup, compare another transfer with an in-game storage upgrade. The Shop option preserves the collection; transfer does not.
- Power up only after the keep decision. Investing resources in a Pokémon you may later discard wastes Stardust and Candy. Power it up only when its intended role justifies the cost.
How appraisal should guide a keep decision
Appraisal is an information step. The Team Leader evaluation presents an overall rating of up to three stars and separate assessments for Attack, Defense, and HP. Those details let you compare candidates rather than relying only on CP, appearance, or the order in which you caught them.
What appraisal can tell you
- Whether two otherwise similar candidates have different underlying Attack, Defense, or HP assessments.
- Whether a Pokémon merits a closer look before you spend scarce Stardust or Candy.
- Which duplicate better fits a goal you have already defined, such as a collection standard or a battle project.
What appraisal cannot promise
A higher star rating is not a guarantee that a Pokémon is best for every game mode. The useful balance among Attack, Defense, and HP depends on the role you want the Pokémon to play, while collection and sentimental goals may make appraisal irrelevant. Use the screen to inform your choice, not to replace the choice.

Purifying a Shadow Pokémon is a documented exception to the appraisal rule: purification improves its appraisal. By contrast, evolving or powering up does not improve appraisal. Do not spend resources expecting either action to add stars or raise the Attack, Defense, or HP assessment.
Powering up: benefits, costs, and timing
A power-up increases a Pokémon’s CP and HP. It consumes Stardust and Candy from that Pokémon’s evolution family, and the resource requirement can rise as the Pokémon becomes stronger. Higher power-up levels can also require Candy XL.
What you spend

The official guidance says players can begin collecting Candy XL at level 31. Possible sources include catching, transferring, hatching, evolving, trading, feeding Pokémon in Gyms, and walking with a Buddy. Availability of those sources does not make every power-up worthwhile; the decision still depends on your purpose and budget.

Should you power up before or after evolving?
There is one firm answer supported by the mechanics: neither powering up nor evolving improves appraisal. Therefore, appraise first and avoid spending Stardust or Candy merely to change the rating. The timing of an evolution or a power-up should follow your planned use, available resources, and the form you actually intend to keep. The documented help does not prescribe a universal order for every species or game mode.

Transfer or buy more storage?
When storage is full, the official support guidance identifies two approaches: transfer Pokémon or purchase a storage upgrade in the in-game Shop. They solve the capacity problem in different ways.

The current maximum Pokémon-storage capacity, upgrade increment, and regional price are not established in the official material summarized here. They can change by game version or region, so verify the live Shop before relying on a number. Do not treat an old guide’s cap or price as current automatically.

An orange dot on the main menu can indicate that Pokémon storage or the Item Bag is full. If the alert concerns Pokémon storage, open your Pokémon list and use the cleanup workflow above. You can transfer enough eligible Pokémon to create room, or open the in-game Shop and review the available storage upgrade.

Practical keep, transfer, and power-up rules
Keep for now
- A Pokémon with a clear collection, battle, evolution, or personal purpose.
- A candidate whose appraisal you have not yet reviewed.
- A rare, unusual, or sentimental Pokémon that you would be unhappy to lose.
- A Pokémon you are considering for a resource-intensive build but have not compared with alternatives.
Transfer after checking
- Unwanted duplicates with no defined collection or gameplay role.
- Pokémon whose appraisal and intended use are clearly below another candidate you have chosen.
- Stored Pokémon that you consciously value less than the Candy and space they can provide.
Power up after deciding to keep
- A Pokémon with a defined battle or personal project.
- A candidate whose appraisal has been reviewed and compared with available alternatives.
- A Pokémon for which you have enough family Candy, Stardust, and, when applicable, Candy XL.
Common mistakes and recovery choices
“I powered it up to improve the appraisal.”
Powering up raises CP and HP, not appraisal. If you have already spent resources, the Pokémon may still be useful, but its star rating and Attack, Defense, and HP assessments will not improve from that action.
“I transferred a Pokémon and want it back.”
There is no recovery step in the documented mechanic. Transfer is permanent. The practical safeguard is prevention: confirm the exact selection before accepting the prompt.
“Bulk transfer selected something I did not expect.”
Stop and inspect the safeguards. Shiny, Lucky, and Good Buddy-or-higher Pokémon are blocked from bulk transfer, while Legendary and Mythical transfers have additional setting and species restrictions. Handle uncertain Pokémon individually.

- Do you have a specific reason to keep it? If yes, keep it and continue evaluating. If no, go to the next question.
- Have you checked appraisal? If no, appraise before spending or transferring. If yes, compare it with your other candidates.
