Mega Evolution is an eight-hour transformation that lets one of your Pokémon provide raid-wide attack benefits and extra Candy opportunities for catches sharing its type. The first evolution uses species-specific Mega Energy; later evolutions become cheaper, and eventually free after that Pokémon’s rest period. In raids, Mega bonuses apply to everyone but do not stack, so the best choice depends on the types you plan to catch or use in battle.

Those rules answer the basic timing and bonus questions, but using Mega Energy efficiently requires understanding type matching, form-specific costs, rest periods and the distinction between Candy and Mega Energy.
How the eight-hour Mega window works
When you Mega Evolve a Pokémon, it remains in Mega form for eight hours. The transformation then ends automatically and the Pokémon returns to its regular form. You do not lose the Pokémon, its moves or its accumulated Mega Level when the active period ends.

Mega Level continues after the transformation
Each individual Pokémon’s Mega Level rises as that same Pokémon is Mega Evolved repeatedly. The level remains when the eight-hour transformation ends, so future activations can unlock stronger or additional bonuses. Mega Level is attached to the Pokémon, not simply to the species in your collection; repeatedly using one specimen builds that specimen’s progression.
Higher Mega Levels can affect the bonuses available while the Pokémon is Mega-Evolved. Niantic’s overview also lists a special additional Charged Attack power progression for certain Pokémon that reach Super Max Level: 1 at Base Level, 1.1 at High Level, 1.2 at Max Level and 1.3 at Super Max Level. Those figures describe that documented Charged Attack feature and should not be assumed to be a universal multiplier for every Mega Pokémon or every bonus.
When the Candy bonus applies
A Mega-Evolved Pokémon can produce additional Pokémon Candy when you catch a Pokémon that shares a type with the active Mega. For example, the useful decision is based on type overlap: a Mega whose type matches the species you are hunting can improve the value of that catch session, while an unrelated type does not meet the stated condition.

Niantic’s reviewed help page confirms the additional-Candy rule but does not publish a fixed number of extra Candy, a complete table by Mega Level, or a universal formula for combining the bonus with event modifiers. Do not rely on a claimed “always two extra Candy” rule unless a current official source specifically establishes it for the version and event you are playing.
Choosing a Mega for a catch session
- Identify the Pokémon species or group you intend to catch.
- Check which of its types can be matched by an available Mega-Evolved Pokémon.
- Prefer the specimen with the useful type and the stronger Mega Level, provided its Energy cost and rest status fit your schedule.
- Activate it shortly before the catches so the eight-hour period is spent on the target activity.
Because only one Mega can be active, a catch-focused activation can prevent you from using a different Mega for a raid during the same period. Decide whether Candy or raid support is the priority before confirming the evolution.

Cooldowns, rest periods and the cost of repeating an evolution
The first Mega Evolution of a Pokémon requires Mega Energy. Repeatedly Mega Evolving that specific Pokémon reduces the Mega Energy required over time. Once a Pokémon has Mega Evolved, it can eventually be Mega Evolved again without paying Mega Energy after its rest period finishes.
The official collection guidance says the rest may last up to several days. It does not provide a complete, current table that maps every Mega Level or every species to an exact number of hours or days. Treat the in-game status for your Pokémon as the authoritative indication of whether free reuse is available, rather than applying a fixed schedule from an unofficial chart.
What “free” means
Free reuse means that the Mega Energy charge for that later activation is zero once the rest period has ended. It does not mean the Pokémon can be Mega Evolved repeatedly with no waiting: the rest period still controls when the free activation becomes available. If you need the Mega before the rest ends, the game can present a reduced Energy cost based on that Pokémon’s prior Mega Evolutions.
How to plan around the rest period
- Use the Pokémon’s active status screen to check whether it is resting and whether a free evolution is available.
- Reserve a high-Level specimen for the activity where its type is most valuable.
- Spend Energy on an urgent raid only when the resulting cost is preferable to waiting for the rest period.
- Remember that the rest and cost history belongs to the individual Pokémon you evolved.
Mega Energy: what it is and how to obtain it
Mega Energy is separate from ordinary Pokémon Candy. It is also species-specific: Energy for one species cannot be substituted for an unrelated species. The official collection guidance identifies three main routes.

Keep Mega Energy and ordinary Candy separate when checking your resources. Candy powers normal evolution and other species actions; Mega Energy pays the initial and, when applicable, repeat Mega Evolution cost.

Separate forms can require separate Energy
Some Pokémon have more than one Mega form, and the forms can use separate Energy pools. Niantic’s Charizard example distinguishes Mega Charizard X Energy from Mega Charizard Y Energy. The first evolution into a chosen form uses that form’s full initial cost and reduces later costs for that form; the other form still needs its own first full-cost Mega Evolution.
Rayquaza has an additional prerequisite: a Meteorite must teach it Dragon Ascent before it can Mega Evolve. Having Rayquaza Candy or Mega Energy alone does not replace that move requirement.
What a Mega does in a raid
While a Mega-Evolved Pokémon is battling in a raid, it provides a bonus to all Trainers’ Pokémon in that raid. Every attack receives an attack boost, and attacks whose type matches the Mega Pokémon’s type receive an additional attack boost.
Why type matching matters
The broad boost helps the whole lobby, but the additional boost rewards a Mega whose type overlaps with the attacks being used. Before joining, compare the raid boss’s weaknesses with the types of the attacks your group is likely to use. A Mega chosen only for its species name may provide less practical value than one whose type supports the lobby’s dominant attack type.
Multiple Megas do not stack
If more than one Mega-Evolved Pokémon is battling simultaneously, their bonuses do not add together. The game applies the highest possible applicable attack boost instead. Bringing several Megas therefore does not multiply the raid’s damage bonus; coordinate around the strongest relevant boost and use the remaining team slots for effective attackers.

This non-stacking rule also means that a Mega can still be worthwhile when another Trainer already has one active, but the second Mega should be selected for its type, personal damage and other utility rather than an expectation of a doubled team bonus.
Mega Raid rewards and the catch encounter
Mega Raid Energy rewards are tied to the raid’s post-battle Speed result. A faster defeat can produce a different Energy reward than a slower one, so the lobby’s completion time matters even though the reward amount is not a fixed universal number.
After the Mega Raid boss is defeated, it returns to its regular form before the catch encounter. You are therefore catching the standard form rather than attempting to catch the temporary Mega form itself. Any decision to Mega Evolve your own Pokémon for the battle should be made for the raid bonuses and battle performance, not because the boss will remain Mega during the catch.

A practical pre-activation checklist
- Choose the activity: a catch route, a Mega Raid or another raid.
- Write down the target catch type or the raid boss’s relevant attack and weakness types.
- Compare eligible Mega forms and select the one with the strongest type overlap.
- Check that the chosen Pokémon is not resting, or confirm the Energy cost if you cannot wait.
- Verify form-specific prerequisites, including Dragon Ascent for Rayquaza where applicable.
- Activate only when the eight-hour window will cover the activity.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Assuming every Mega gives a guaranteed fixed number of Candy
The documented rule is an additional-Candy opportunity for catches sharing a type. The reviewed official page does not establish a fixed amount or a complete Mega Level formula, so treat exact numbers circulating in guides as version- or event-dependent unless officially confirmed.

Using a fixed cooldown chart as if it were universal
Niantic describes a rest period that can last up to several days but does not publish a complete schedule in the reviewed guidance. Check the Pokémon’s own status instead of assuming that every species, Mega Level and activation history has the same timer.
Expecting two raid Megas to double the bonus
Raid bonuses do not stack. The highest applicable boost is used, so a second Mega should be justified by type overlap, personal damage or a different strategic need.
Confusing species Energy with Candy
Mega Energy is its own species-linked resource. Ordinary Candy cannot be substituted for it, and Energy from one species does not pay another species’ Mega cost.
