If a Max Battle is missing in Pokémon GO, first look for an active Power Spot on the map and in the Nearby menu. Power Spots rotate and can close, and inactive spots may be hidden from the map on most days. If you find an active spot, you still need enough Max Particles and a party of three that includes at least one Dynamax or Gigantamax Pokémon. When those checks do not explain the problem, consult Niantic’s current Known Issues page and report an unlisted problem through the app.
Why a Max Battle may not be visible
Max Battles are tied to select Power Spots rather than a permanent location or an always-on schedule. A Power Spot can move, close, or rotate to a different boss. The absence of a marker therefore does not automatically mean your account is broken.
Visibility has also changed. In its current Known Issues information, Niantic says inactive Power Spots will no longer appear on the map most days, beginning with the Memories in Motion season. A place you remember from an earlier visit may be inactive now and deliberately omitted from the map. The Nearby menu can still be the more useful way to find an available encounter.
Check for an active Power Spot
- Scan the map around your current location. Look for a Power Spot that has a visible boss and an active timer. A location without an active encounter is not an available Max Battle.
- Open the Nearby menu. Nearby can list Power Spots that are relevant to you and may show the boss species, difficulty, time remaining, location, distance, and whether other Trainers are waiting. This information can reveal an encounter that is not obvious from the map alone.
- Compare the timer and location. If a spot disappears while you are looking for it, it may have closed or rotated. Power Spot locations are temporary, so do not treat a previously used location as a guaranteed spawn point.
- Tap the Power Spot entry. The entry screen is where Pokémon GO checks whether you can pay the Max Particle cost and assemble an eligible battle party.
Understand the current map-visibility rule
The map does not promise to display every Power Spot at all times. Niantic’s current listing says inactive Power Spots are hidden on most days under the rule introduced with the Memories in Motion season. That creates two common situations:

- You may see a Power Spot in Nearby because it has an active boss even when a familiar, inactive location is absent from the map.
- You may see no marker because there is no active encounter in the area, not because the game failed to load every permanent location.
Use the Nearby menu and the remaining time shown for each entry to decide whether there is an encounter worth traveling to. If no active spot appears in either place, there may simply be no currently available Max Battle within the game’s local search area.
Confirm that your team can enter
Finding a boss does not guarantee that the Join button will work. Niantic’s official Max Battle instructions require a party of three Pokémon and at least one Max Pokémon. Only Dynamax or Gigantamax Pokémon can participate in a Max Battle; ordinary non-Max Pokémon cannot fill the party.
Party requirements
- Select three Pokémon for the battle party.
- Include at least one Dynamax or Gigantamax Pokémon.
- Make sure the selected Max Pokémon is available in your Pokémon storage and can be chosen on the entry screen.
If you can see the Power Spot and boss but cannot proceed, inspect the party before assuming the encounter is missing. A party made entirely of ordinary Pokémon does not satisfy the entry rule, even if those Pokémon are otherwise strong enough for normal raids or battles.

Check your Max Particles
Max Particles are required to enter a Max Battle, and the amount depends on the boss. The entry screen should show the cost before you confirm participation. If your balance is below that amount, the battle can appear available while remaining inaccessible.
Standard limits published by Niantic

These are standard game-rule figures, not guarantees for every event. Niantic may set different collection limits or bonuses during a special event, so read the active event announcement if an event is running. Spending particles on one battle also reduces the balance available for another encounter; reaching the storage cap does not remove the cost of entering a battle.

Distinguish “not appearing” from “cannot join”

No location or boss is shown
Start with availability and visibility. Search the map and Nearby menu, account for inactive spots being hidden most days, and remember that Power Spots move and close. Until an active boss is listed, there is no battle to enter.

Check resources and eligibility. Verify the boss-specific Max Particle cost, your current balance, and the three-Pokémon party rule. Confirm that at least one selected Pokémon is Dynamax or Gigantamax. These requirements can prevent entry even though the Power Spot itself is working normally.
The entry screen or Nearby information behaves inconsistently
After checking the official requirements, compare the behavior with Niantic’s Known Issues listing. That page changes over time, so an issue that was not listed earlier may be documented later.

General phone troubleshooting: useful, but not a confirmed Max Battle fix
Restarting Pokémon GO, checking the network connection, installing an available game update, or rebooting the phone can resolve general loading problems. However, Niantic’s official materials for this symptom do not identify those actions as specific remedies for a missing Max Battle. Treat them as ordinary device troubleshooting, not as a substitute for checking Power Spot activity, map visibility, particles, and party eligibility.
If you try these steps, reopen the game and repeat the map-and-Nearby check. A successful reload should be judged by whether an active Power Spot and boss now appear, not merely by whether the app launches.

Niantic directs players to review the official Known Issues page when a feature does not behave as expected. Look for entries involving Power Spots, Max Battles, Nearby discovery, or Max Particles. Because the listing is mutable, read the current entry rather than relying on an old screenshot or forum post.

If the behavior is not already listed, use the in-app reporting route to submit a potential bug. Include what you saw and the checks you completed:
- Whether the map showed any Power Spot.
- Whether Nearby listed an active boss, its difficulty, timer, and distance.
- Whether the location disappeared or rotated before you could enter.
- Your available Max Particles and the cost shown for the boss.
- The three Pokémon you selected and which one was Dynamax or Gigantamax.
- The approximate time and location, plus any error message displayed.
This information separates an ordinary lack of an active encounter from a reproducible account or app problem. Do not submit multiple reports for the same event before checking whether Niantic has added it to Known Issues.
A complete order of operations
- Open Pokémon GO and inspect the map for an active Power Spot and boss.
- Open Nearby and record the boss, difficulty, remaining time, location, distance, and whether other Trainers are waiting.
- If the map is empty, remember that inactive Power Spots may be hidden most days and that spots can close or rotate.
- Tap an active spot and read the boss-specific Max Particle cost.
- Confirm that your balance can pay that cost; the standard rules allow 800 particles to be collected per day and 1,500 stored, subject to event changes.
- Build a party of three Pokémon containing at least one Dynamax or Gigantamax Pokémon.
- If no active spot appears or the requirements are satisfied but the feature still fails, consult Known Issues.
- Report the problem through the Pokémon GO app when it is not already documented.
Following this order prevents the most common misdiagnosis: treating a temporary, inactive, or rotated Power Spot as a permanent landmark, or treating an eligibility error as a missing battle.
