Use Favorite for protection and Tag for organization. Mark an individual Pokémon as a Favorite when your priority is avoiding an accidental transfer. Create a Tag when you want a named, reusable category that you can search or filter later. They solve different problems and can be used together.
Favorites are individual safety markers. Tags are player-defined collection labels, available to Trainers at Level 15 and above. A favorite Pokémon appears when you search favorite; a tagged Pokémon appears when you search # followed by the tag name. The practical system is simple: favorite valuable individuals, then add tags that explain why you keep or use them.
Favorite and Tag are not competing versions of the same feature
Pokémon GO uses two different inventory tools. A Favorite is attached to one Pokémon and is primarily a protection marker. A Tag is a named category that can be applied to selected Pokémon and used to retrieve that group later.

If you are trying to find every Pokémon you set aside for a particular purpose, the question is which category describes the group. Favorite answers the first question; Tag answers the second.

Niantic describes Tags as a way to “categorize and easily access your Pokémon based on characteristics you are most interested in.” Its search guidance separately explains that favoriting a Pokémon helps make sure it cannot be transferred away. Those documented roles are complementary rather than a ranking of which feature is better.
What Favorite does
A Favorite protects one prized Pokémon
Tap the star on a Pokémon’s profile to mark that individual as a favorite. Niantic says this “will help make sure your favorite Pokémon cannot be transferred away.” The wording is deliberately qualified: Favorite is a safeguard against an accidental transfer, not a promise that every possible game action or context is permanently impossible.
Favorite is therefore the right first step for a Pokémon you would regret losing. Examples might include a personal favorite, a Pokémon with an important move set, or one you have invested time or resources in. The reason is up to you; the function remains the same—identify an individual that deserves extra protection.

A star does not tell you why you kept a Pokémon, what task it is intended for, or which other Pokémon belong with it. Ten favorites can represent ten unrelated decisions. If you need a reusable group such as “raid candidates” or “trade later,” use a Tag as well.
How to find Favorites
Open your Pokémon inventory, tap the magnifying-glass search control, and enter favorite. The search returns Pokémon marked as favorites. The search term is useful when you need to inspect protected individuals without scrolling through the entire collection.
What Tag does
A Tag creates a named, searchable category
Tags let you choose a name and background color, apply the tag to selected Pokémon, and later filter the collection by that label. The category can describe any characteristic you care about: a planned activity, a sorting state, a project, or a personal convention. The game does not prescribe a universal naming system, so the useful name is the one that remains clear to you later.

Tags require Level 15
Niantic’s Tag help page states that the feature is available to Trainers at Level 15 and above. If you are below Level 15, a missing Tags interface is an eligibility issue rather than evidence that your app is malfunctioning. You can still use Favorites, because the cited inventory-search guidance does not state a level gate for them.
Tags do not replace Favorite protection
A tag is an organizational label, not the documented transfer-safety control. Adding a tag named “keep” or “important” does not provide the same protection as tapping the star. If losing a particular Pokémon would be a problem, Favorite it even when it also belongs to one or more organizational tags.

There is no published official comparison showing that one tool is faster, more popular, or more successful for organizing collections. Choose based on the job you need done, not on an assumed performance advantage.
How to Favorite a Pokémon
- Open the Pokémon inventory.
- Tap the Pokémon you want to protect.
- On its profile, tap the star icon to mark it as a Favorite.
- Return to the inventory and search
favoritewhen you want to verify or review your favorites.
Make the star decision at the individual level. If five Pokémon belong to the same project, that is a reason to create a Tag; it is not a reason to assume that every member needs identical protection. Conversely, if one member is irreplaceable, Favorite that Pokémon even if the rest of the group is temporary.
How to create and manage a Tag
Create the Tag
Once your Trainer is Level 15 or higher, use the Tags page in the Pokémon interface.
- Open the Tags page.
- Tap the plus button.
- Enter a name that describes the category.
- Choose a background color.
- Tap Done.
The color is a visual aid, while the name is what you use in search. Pick names that remain distinct when you see several categories together. For example, “Raid-ready” communicates a purpose more clearly than a vague label such as “good.”

Add Pokémon to the Tag
- Open the new tag.
- Choose Add Pokémon.
- Select the Pokémon that belong in the category.
- Tap Select.
This workflow applies the category to a chosen set rather than forcing you to label the entire collection. You can therefore build a small working list and expand it as your plans change.
Filter by a Tag
From the Tags header in the Pokémon inventory, tap a tag. The collection is filtered to Pokémon carrying that tag. You can also open the search field and enter # followed by the tag name; Niantic’s example is #battle. Use the exact tag name after the hash so the search matches the category you created.
Edit or delete a Tag
The Tags page provides controls to edit or delete tags. Editing is appropriate when a category’s name or color no longer fits your system. Deleting a tag removes the organizational label, so review the category before confirming if you still rely on it for filtering. The Pokémon themselves are managed separately from the tag record.
Manage a Tag from an individual Pokémon
You can open a Pokémon’s tag menu by tapping the tag shown beneath its HP bar or by opening the Pokémon’s action menu. From there, add or remove tags and view the tagged group. This is useful when you notice one Pokémon is missing a category while inspecting its profile, because you do not have to leave the profile and rebuild the entire list.
A practical system that uses both features
Step 1: Protect individual exceptions with Favorite
Start with the Pokémon whose accidental transfer would cause the greatest regret. Tap the star on each one. This creates a safety layer before you begin broader sorting. Do not use a tag as a substitute for this step when transfer protection is the concern.
Step 2: Define categories around decisions you repeatedly make
Create tags for groups you expect to revisit. A category can represent an activity, a status, or a next action—for example, a group you are preparing, a group you intend to evaluate, or a group reserved for a particular plan. The best tags reduce repeated searching because they preserve a decision you have already made.

Step 3: Apply tags consistently
When you create a category, decide what qualifies before adding Pokémon. If “trade later” means any Pokémon you are willing to exchange, apply it consistently; if it means only Pokémon you have already discussed with someone, keep that distinction in the name or use a separate tag. Consistency matters more than the particular wording.

A prized Pokémon can be both favorited and tagged. The star communicates “protect this individual,” while the tag communicates “this individual belongs to this group.” For example, a favorite Pokémon could also carry a tag describing a planned activity. This combination is an organizational approach inferred from the two features’ distinct functions; Niantic does not prescribe a specific tagging scheme.

“I am afraid I will transfer this one by mistake.”
Use Favorite. Mark that Pokémon with the star and use the favorite search term when you need to review protected individuals.
“I need to see every Pokémon assigned to one plan.”
Use Tag. Create a named category, add the relevant Pokémon, and tap the tag or search #tagname to filter the list.
“I want both protection and a working list.”
Use both. Favorite the individuals that need protection, then add a tag for the shared project or purpose. Neither mark has to replace the other.

“I am below Level 15.”
Use Favorites now for individual protection. The cited Tag instructions limit that feature to Level 15 and above, so the Tags interface may not be available until you reach the requirement.

“My collection is small and I rarely search it.”
You may need only Favorites for the few individuals you want to protect. Tags are optional organization; they are not required for a tidy inventory, and there is no official statistic showing that every player benefits from creating them.
Search and maintenance tips
- Use the exact standalone term
favoriteto retrieve favorited Pokémon. - Use a hash before the tag name, such as
#battle, when searching for a specific tag. - Tap a tag from the Tags header when you prefer visual filtering instead of typing.
- Choose tag names that describe an action or decision, so their purpose remains obvious weeks later.
- Review tags when your plans change; edit or delete obsolete categories from the Tags page.
- When viewing a Pokémon, check the tag beneath its HP bar or its action menu to add or remove a category without rebuilding the list.
These practices are organizational choices, not game rules. The official help pages explain how the controls work but do not report adoption rates, time saved, transfer-error reductions, or another measurable advantage for one method.
Troubleshooting
The Tags option is missing
Check your Trainer level first. Niantic specifies Level 15 as the access threshold for Tags. If you have reached that level and still cannot find the feature, confirm that you are looking in the Pokémon inventory’s Tags area rather than only in the search field. The documented requirement does not establish other causes, so avoid assuming that a missing option means your Pokémon or account is damaged.

The tag search returns nothing
Check the syntax and spelling. Enter # followed by the tag name, matching the name you created. Alternatively, open the Tags header and tap the tag directly. A Pokémon appears only if that tag was applied to it.
A Pokémon is not showing in a tag
Open that Pokémon’s tag menu from the label beneath its HP bar or from the action menu. Add the missing tag, then return to the tagged group. If the category was deleted or renamed, use the Tags page to inspect the current tag list and update your organization.
I want to protect a tagged Pokémon
Tags do not provide the documented transfer safeguard. Open the Pokémon’s profile and tap the star to Favorite it. Keep the tag if you still need the category.
What the official documentation does—and does not—establish
The current help pages establish the controls, search terms, and Level 15 requirement. They do not publish a head-to-head speed test, a popularity survey, a time-saved estimate, an organizational success rate, or a comparative transfer-error rate. Any claim that Tags are inherently faster or that Favorites are better for every player would go beyond the documented evidence.

Final decision
Choose Favorite when the object of your concern is one Pokémon and accidental transfer is the risk. Choose Tag when the object is a reusable group and you want a named filter. At Level 15 or above, use both when that makes sense: the star protects an individual, while the tag records the context that connects it to other Pokémon.
