Niantic’s official guidance classifies GPS spoofing, modified software, and several other ways of bypassing normal play as cheating—not expert tactics to copy. The title phrase “cheats that expert players use” should not be read as evidence that skilled players use them: Niantic’s published guidance lists prohibited behaviors, not a verified set of techniques or a list of legitimate expert strategies.
10 behaviors Pokémon GO classifies as cheating
This checklist summarizes examples in Niantic’s Player Guidelines and Gameplay Fairness Policy. It is not a ranked list, and it is not exhaustive. Niantic’s Player Guidelines put the rule plainly: “Don’t cheat.”

- Falsifying GPS location. Location spoofing makes the game treat a player as being somewhere they are not. Niantic identifies GPS spoofing as cheating.
- Using modified or unofficial software. The Player Guidelines prohibit modified or unofficial versions of the game.
- Playing through an emulator. Niantic’s support guidance lists emulators among the unsupported ways of accessing the game.
- Using unauthorized software or add-ons to access game systems. Niantic identifies unauthorized access to Pokémon GO clients or backends—including through third-party software or add-ons—as cheating.
- Using multiple or shared accounts to get around gameplay rules. The Player Guidelines identify multiple or shared accounts used to circumvent gameplay as a cheating method.
- Intentionally exploiting bugs for rewards. Finding a bug is different from deliberately exploiting it to gain an advantage; the guidelines identify intentional bug exploitation as cheating.
- Manipulating competitive systems. The guidelines include manipulating matchmaking, outcomes, rankings, or other competitive systems among prohibited conduct.
- Abusing refunds. Refund-policy abuse is listed as a cheating method.
- Buying, selling, or trading accounts through third-party platforms. Niantic’s guidance identifies third-party account transactions as prohibited.
- Buying, selling, or trading in-game currency or items through third-party platforms. The same guidance also identifies third-party transactions involving in-game currency or items.
These categories describe conduct Niantic says violates its rules; they are not instructions for carrying it out. The policy pages do not establish that expert players use these methods, or that any particular prohibited method reliably produces an advantage.
What penalties does Niantic describe?
Niantic’s Gameplay Fairness Policy describes an escalating three-strike system, while warning that some conduct can lead to immediate termination without prior warning.

| Policy stage | Published duration | Possible effect |
|---|---|---|
| First strike: in-app warning | Gameplay may be degraded for approximately 7 days. | Possible restrictions include rare Pokémon not appearing in the wild or Nearby tracker, not receiving new EX Raid Passes, and limits on trading or gifts, Showcases, or Routes. |
| Second strike: suspension | Approximately 30 days. | The account is suspended during this period. |
| Third strike: termination | Permanent. | The account is terminated. |
The durations and consequences above are those stated in Niantic’s policy; they are not independent estimates. The policy also says some behavior may result in immediate termination, so the three stages should not be treated as a guaranteed sequence.
How to tell whether an account is banned
Niantic’s account-help guidance says that a message explicitly stating an account is suspended or terminated for violating the Terms of Service indicates a ban. Other sign-in or map-loading errors, when that message is absent, may be temporary. For a sign-in problem without a ban message, use the account sign-in help route rather than assuming the account has been penalized.

How to appeal a termination
If you believe Niantic terminated your account by mistake, submit a ban appeal through its official appeal guidance. An appeal is a request for review, not a promise that the decision will be reversed. Niantic says it does not publicly discuss internal detection mechanisms; its guidance says enforcement follows identification and confirmation of proof, and that reports alone do not decide bans.

- Use the official game and avoid unauthorized add-ons or software.
- Play without falsifying your location, sharing accounts to bypass rules, or exploiting bugs for rewards.
- Do not manipulate competitive systems or use third-party account, currency, or item transactions.
- Play with your surroundings in mind. Niantic says its games are designed for outdoor play; its Player Guidelines advise watching for hazards and not using the app while driving.
Niantic’s cited guidance explains prohibited conduct and enforcement, but it does not verify a current list of ten legitimate expert strategies. For an advantage that stays within the rules, rely on official gameplay features and current, game-specific strategy guidance rather than cheat tools or account services.
