For Pokémon Scarlet, Violet, and other Nintendo Switch releases, choose a physical game card if you want to lend, resell, collect, or keep playing without tying the base game to one Nintendo Account. Choose digital if instant access, no card swapping, and a card-free library matter more. A bundle is worthwhile only after you confirm exactly what it contains and whether its DLC matches your game.

The most important compatibility rule is simple: Pokémon Scarlet DLC works with Scarlet, and Pokémon Violet DLC works with Violet. The formats, bundle contents, account rules, storage needs, and Switch-generation labels determine whether a listing is actually the right purchase.

Start with the format decision

Nintendo generally calls the physical media a game card, although many buyers still say cartridge. Both formats run the same core game when they are the same edition; the meaningful differences are access, ownership, storage, sharing, and what happens when the card or account is unavailable.

Choose this When it fits best What to remember
Physical game card You collect boxed games, lend them, resell them, give them as gifts, or want the base game to remain usable independently of a Nintendo Account. The card must be inserted whenever you play. Updates and DLC can still consume console or microSD storage.
Digital download You want to launch immediately, carry many games on one console, and avoid swapping cards. The purchase belongs to the Nintendo Account that bought it. Nintendo says digital purchases cannot be transferred to another Nintendo Account.
Game-plus-DLC bundle You want the base game and its expansion together and have verified the delivery method, edition, and game version. A bundle may provide a download code or register a game to an account; the word bundle does not guarantee a cartridge.

There is no authoritative, current price table showing that physical or digital Pokémon editions are always cheaper. Retail discounts, region, edition, and included DLC change the calculation, so compare the complete package rather than the headline price.

How a physical Pokémon game card works

Starting and playing the game

Insert the game card into the compatible Nintendo Switch console and select the software icon. Nintendo’s physical-software support describes insertion as the action that starts compatible software. The card must remain available when you play; removing it means the console no longer has the physical license needed to launch that copy.

What the card does and does not contain

A standard physical release supplies the base software on the card. Patches, updates, downloadable expansions, and other post-launch data may be installed to the console’s internal storage or a compatible microSD card. A card therefore reduces the initial download compared with a fully digital purchase, but it does not eliminate storage requirements.

Lending, gifts, and resale

You can hand the physical item to another person or sell it, subject to the retailer’s policies and local law. The recipient needs the correct console and edition, but does not need your Nintendo Account to use the base game on the card. Any DLC purchased separately remains associated with the account that bought it, so transferring the card does not transfer that DLC.

Physical ownership trade-offs

  • You must carry and swap cards when changing games.
  • A lost, damaged, or unavailable card prevents access to that physical copy.
  • Boxed stock can be region-specific, used, or missing advertised codes; inspect the listing and packaging.
  • Collectors and gift recipients may value the box and printed game card even when a digital copy would be more convenient.

How a digital Pokémon purchase works

Download and launch model

A digital purchase is downloaded or registered through Nintendo eShop and then managed through the Nintendo Account and Nintendo’s virtual game-card system. Once the software is available on the console, you can launch it without inserting anything. This is useful if you switch between several games in one session or keep the console in a travel case.

Account ownership is permanent

Nintendo’s account-transfer support states: “It's not possible to transfer digital purchases from one Nintendo Account to another.” Select the account that should own the game before paying. Changing the console’s primary user later does not move ownership to a different account.

Other users on the same console

Nintendo also explains that when a virtual game card is loaded on a console, other users of that console can access the downloaded game or DLC. That local access does not make the purchase transferable: the buying account remains the owner, and access depends on Nintendo’s account and console rules.

Storage and downloads

The complete digital software package is stored on the console or a compatible microSD card. Updates and DLC require additional space. Nintendo’s cited support pages do not provide one universal Pokémon file-size figure, and sizes can vary by title, edition, update history, and platform, so check the specific eShop listing before purchasing a small-capacity card.

  • Travel to the Hisui region—the Sinnoh of old—and build the region’s first Pokédex

Digital trade-offs

  • There is no physical item to lend or resell.
  • Deleting the software does not change account ownership, but you will need to download it again to play.
  • Access depends on the purchasing account and Nintendo’s virtual game-card loading rules.
  • Digital games are convenient for a library that stays on one console, while frequent console moves require careful account and transfer management.

Cartridge versus digital: the practical comparison

Decision factor Physical game card Digital download
Starting the game Insert the compatible card; keep it inserted while playing. Download or register the software, then launch from the console.
Switching games Requires carrying and swapping cards. Switch games from the home screen without changing media.
Lending and resale The item can be handed to another person or sold, subject to local practices. The purchase itself cannot be transferred to another Nintendo Account.
Storage Base software is supplied on the card; updates and DLC may use console storage. The full software download uses console or microSD storage, plus updates and DLC.
Account dependence The card is the primary access object for the base game. Account ownership and virtual game-card loading determine access.
Best match Collectors, gift recipients, lenders, and buyers who prioritize a tangible copy. Players who prioritize instant access and a card-free library.

Nintendo’s 2024 investor presentation lists Switch Pokémon releases including Let's Go, Pikachu!, Let's Go, Eevee!, Sword, Shield, Brilliant Diamond, Shining Pearl, Legends: Arceus, Scarlet, and Violet. It does not publish a format-by-format price comparison, so do not treat that presentation as evidence that one format is consistently cheaper.

What Pokémon bundles actually include

Two Nintendo bundle delivery methods

Nintendo’s bundle FAQ identifies two types of full-game downloads. Some boxes contain a download code that you redeem in Nintendo eShop. Others contain a game that becomes registered to your Nintendo Account when you open Nintendo eShop. Both can be sold as a bundle while containing no physical game card.

Read the package or retailer description for phrases such as game card, download code, digital version, account registration, or game-key card. Do not infer the delivery method from a box photo, a low price, or the word physical in a marketplace title.

Game plus DLC listings

Nintendo’s US store has listed Pokémon Scarlet Bundle (Game + DLC) at a regular price of $94.99 on a captured 2023 page. That is a dated US listing signal, not a current worldwide price. Retail prices, promotions, taxes, currency, and regional availability can change. A seller’s current page should be checked before treating the figure as a price you will pay.

A game-plus-DLC listing may deliver a digital base game and expansion, a physical base game with a DLC code, or another combination. Before checkout, identify each component separately:

  • Which base game is included: Scarlet, Violet, or another Pokémon title?
  • Is the base game on a card, supplied as a code, or registered to an account?
  • Is DLC included as a code, already attached to the purchasing account, or absent?
  • Does the package target Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, or a Nintendo Switch 2 Edition?
  • Is a required download or storage installation mentioned?

Pokémon DLC compatibility: Scarlet and Violet are separate

Nintendo states that Pokémon Scarlet: The Hidden Treasure of Area Zero is only compatible with Pokémon Scarlet, while Pokémon Violet: The Hidden Treasure of Area Zero is only compatible with Pokémon Violet. Buying Scarlet DLC does not unlock the expansion in Violet, and buying Violet DLC does not unlock it in Scarlet.

Think of the DLC as two different products, not one expansion that detects whichever game you own. Match the product name and icon to the base game before redeeming a code. If you own both games, you need the corresponding DLC product for each one.

When DLC appears to be missing

Nintendo’s support flow asks whether the player is using a physical game card or a virtual game card when diagnosing DLC access. Check that the base game is the same version named by the DLC, that the code was redeemed by the intended account, and that the console is using that account’s virtual game card when applicable. A correctly redeemed Scarlet expansion will not appear in Violet, even if both games are installed on the same console.

Nintendo Switch, Switch 2, and edition labels

Physical releases can differ by platform generation and edition. Nintendo’s physical-software guidance advises checking the package label for Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, or Nintendo Switch 2 Edition compatibility. A game card made for one platform or edition may not provide the same feature set as another release.

Check these labels before ordering

  • Console family: Nintendo Switch or Nintendo Switch 2.
  • Edition designation: standard release or Nintendo Switch 2 Edition.
  • Region and language information where the retailer provides it.
  • Whether the product is a normal game card or a game-key card that requires a download.
  • Whether an upgrade component is included or sold separately.

The game-key-card distinction is especially relevant to newer Nintendo Switch 2 releases. A game-key card is physical media that initiates a required download, so it should not be treated as a fully self-contained card until the listing confirms what is stored on it.

Storage, microSD cards, and download planning

Physical buyers should reserve space for patches and DLC; digital buyers should reserve space for the entire game as well as later updates. Because no single official Pokémon download-size figure applies to every title and edition, use the individual eShop page or package information for the game you are buying rather than relying on a generic estimate.

If a digital game will not fit, a compatible microSD card can expand console storage. Capacity is a planning choice: account for the base download, expected updates, DLC, screenshots, and other games. Confirm the card’s compatibility and the console’s free space before beginning a large download, and leave room for temporary installation data.

A step-by-step buying checklist

  1. Identify the exact game. Confirm whether the listing is Scarlet, Violet, Legends: Arceus, Sword, Shield, Brilliant Diamond, Shining Pearl, Let's Go, Pikachu!, Let's Go, Eevee!, or another title.
  2. Confirm the console label. Check whether the product is for Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, or a Nintendo Switch 2 Edition.
  3. Classify the physical product. Determine whether it contains a full game card or a game-key card that requires a download.
  4. Classify the digital product. For an eShop purchase or code, select the Nintendo Account that should permanently own it.
  5. Break down the bundle. Verify whether delivery is a card, download code, or account registration, and list the base game and every DLC component.
  6. Match the expansion. Use the Scarlet-to-Scarlet and Violet-to-Violet compatibility rule before redeeming or buying DLC.
  7. Calculate the complete cost. Include the game, DLC, taxes, shipping, required storage, and any upgrade component in your region.
  8. Check seller details. Confirm region, edition, new or used condition, code validity, and return terms.
  9. Plan installation. Make sure the console has enough free space and a reliable connection if the card, code, bundle, or DLC requires a download.

Common buying mistakes and fixes

Assuming every bundle includes a cartridge

Symptom: The box arrives without a game card. Fix: Re-read the bundle description and packaging. Nintendo recognizes both redeemable download codes and account-registered downloads as full-game bundle formats.

Buying the wrong version of the expansion

Symptom: The DLC code redeems but the content does not appear in the game you play. Fix: Compare the DLC title with the base-game title. Scarlet expansion content is for Scarlet; Violet expansion content is for Violet.

Purchasing on the wrong account

Symptom: A family member’s profile cannot find a purchase after a console change. Fix: Sign in with the Nintendo Account that bought the game and review virtual game-card loading. The purchase cannot be transferred to a different account.

Running out of storage

Symptom: A digital download, update, or game-key-card installation stops for lack of space. Fix: Check the title’s specific storage requirement, archive unused software if appropriate, and use a compatible microSD card with enough spare capacity.

Ordering an incompatible edition

Symptom: The package label does not match the console or expected features. Fix: Verify the Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, or Nintendo Switch 2 Edition label before opening the package; contact the seller promptly if the listing and item differ.

Which format fits common situations?

You collect Pokémon or want a gift with a box

A physical game card is the natural fit. The recipient receives a tangible item and can use the base game without your account. Check whether the package is complete and whether any promised DLC is a separate code.

You play several games every day

Digital is usually more convenient because you can switch titles from the home screen. Plan storage and keep ownership on the account that will continue to use the console.

You share games with friends

Physical is the straightforward sharing format because the card itself can be handed over. A digital purchase is not a transferable object, even when other users on the same console can access a loaded virtual game card.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You are buying Scarlet or Violet with the expansion

Start by choosing the base game, then select the matching game-plus-DLC product. Do not buy a cheaper-looking opposite-version expansion expecting it to work.

You are moving from Switch to Switch 2

Check the edition and compatibility label on the exact release. Do not assume that a standard Switch package, a Switch 2 Edition, and a game-key card provide identical installation or upgrade behavior.

Final buying rule

Buy the physical card when tangible ownership, lending, resale, collecting, or account independence outweighs the inconvenience of carrying media. Buy digital when instant launching and a card-free library are worth permanent account ownership and storage use. For any bundle, identify the delivery method and every included component; for DLC, match the product to the exact Scarlet or Violet base game.
