To use a Poisson distribution table, first match its entries to the question: choose the column for the average count, λ, and the row for the event count, x. Then check whether the table shows exact probabilities, P(X = x), or cumulative probabilities, P(X ≤ x). The table format determines whether you read one cell, add cells, or use a complement.
What a Poisson distribution table shows
A Poisson random variable counts how many events occur in a defined interval or exposure—for example, calls in 15 minutes or arrivals in an hour. The parameter λ (lambda) is the average number of events for that same interval. The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) describes the Poisson distribution as a model for the number of events occurring within a given time interval.
For a count x = 0, 1, 2, …, the exact probability is:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →P(X = x) = e−λλx / x!
The cumulative probability through x is:
F(x; λ) = P(X ≤ x) = Σi=0x e−λλi / i!
Here, X is the event count, e is the mathematical constant, and x! is the factorial of x. NIST lists the mean as λ, the standard deviation as √λ, and the possible counts as nonnegative integers. NIST Engineering Statistics Handbook: Poisson Distribution

How do I read a Poisson distribution table?
- Identify the interval or exposure. Make sure the question’s time period or other exposure is clear.
- Find λ for that same interval. Use the average event count that applies to the interval in the question.
- Check the table’s heading and notes. Confirm whether each cell gives an exact probability, P(X = x), or a cumulative probability, P(X ≤ x). Also check which λ values and x counts are included and how many decimal places are shown.
- Translate the wording into an event. “Exactly” asks for one count; phrases such as “at most” and “fewer than” set a threshold and require careful handling of the endpoint.
- Read or calculate the probability. Use the relevant cell, a sum of exact cells, or a complement, depending on the table type and question.
In an exact-probability table, columns may represent λ and rows may represent x. The intersection gives P(X = x). For instance, a table cell for λ = 4 and x = 6 gives the probability of exactly six events when the model’s average is four. A cumulative table instead reports the probability of x or fewer events, so do not add its entries again.
Match common wording to the right probability
For integer threshold a, these expressions show how the endpoint changes the calculation. F is the cumulative distribution function, where F(a) = P(X ≤ a).
| Question wording | Probability | Using a cumulative table |
|---|---|---|
| Exactly a | P(X = a) | F(a) − F(a − 1), when both cumulative values are available |
| Fewer than a | P(X < a) | F(a − 1) |
| At most a | P(X ≤ a) | F(a) |
| More than a | P(X > a) | 1 − F(a) |
| At least a | P(X ≥ a) | 1 − F(a − 1) |
With an exact-probability table, add the cells that belong to the requested event. For example, “fewer than three” includes 0, 1, and 2—not 3. For an upper tail such as “more than one,” subtract the cumulative probability through 1 from 1. That complement is usually simpler than adding an unbounded sequence of exact probabilities.

Worked examples
Exactly six events when λ = 4
Choose the λ = 4 column and x = 6 row in an exact-probability table. The illustrative table used by Statology reports P(X = 6) = 0.1042, or about 10.42%. Its entries are rounded to four decimal places, so treat this as an approximate table value. Statology: Poisson Distribution Table
Fewer than three events when λ = 4
“Fewer than three” means X < 3, so include counts 0, 1, and 2. Using the rounded entries in the same table:
P(X < 3) = P(X = 0) + P(X = 1) + P(X = 2) = 0.0183 + 0.0733 + 0.1465 = 0.2381

More than one call in 15 minutes
Suppose the average is six calls in two hours and the question concerns a 15-minute interval. The interval is one-eighth as long, so the scaled average is λ = 6 × 1/8 = 0.75 calls. OpenStax’s worked example uses the complement of zero or one call:
P(X > 1) = 1 − [P(X = 0) + P(X = 1)] = 0.1733
This is a worked mathematical example, not a claim about call volumes generally. It illustrates why λ must correspond to the interval being asked about and why a complement can simplify an upper-tail calculation. OpenStax, Introductory Business Statistics 2e: Poisson Distribution

Check that the model fits the question
A table gives probabilities conditional on the chosen λ; it does not establish that a real process follows a Poisson distribution. In the instructional explanation from OpenStax, the model relies on assumptions that the event probability or rate remains stable, events occur independently across intervals, and simultaneous successes do not occur. These are modeling assumptions, not guarantees about every process.
- Define exactly what counts as an event.
- Keep the interval or exposure consistent when selecting λ.
- Consider whether the event rate is reasonably stable over that interval.
- Consider whether events are independent enough for the model to be useful.
The mean is λ and the standard deviation is √λ, according to NIST. These describe the model’s count distribution; they do not verify its assumptions for a particular situation.
What to do when the table does not cover your values
Printed tables may omit the required λ or count x, or may round too heavily for the precision you need. NIST notes that general-purpose statistical software commonly includes at least some Poisson functions. Check that the function you use is for the exact or cumulative probability you need, enter λ for the correct interval, and verify whether the result is P(X = x) or P(X ≤ x).
