Point Nemo is the farthest point in the ocean from land. NOAA places the South Pacific coordinate at 48°52.6′S, 123°23.6′W, approximately 2,688 kilometers (1,670 miles) from the nearest land. A peer-reviewed 2007 calculation gives 2,690 ± 2 kilometers, using the coasts of Ducie Island, Motu Nui and Maher Island. Other places often described as remote—such as Bouvetøya and Tristan da Cunha—are isolated islands or inhabited archipelagos, so they answer different questions.

What “farthest from land” means

In this comparison, “farthest” means the point in the ocean with the greatest minimum distance to any land. For every candidate ocean coordinate, the relevant measurement is the distance to its nearest coastline or island. The winning coordinate is therefore the oceanic pole of inaccessibility: the place in the ocean that has no land closer than any other ocean point.

That definition is narrower than “the most remote place on Earth.” It does not measure distance to a city, a port, a road, a country, an airport or any other form of human activity. It also does not rank islands by how far they sit from a mainland. A single ocean coordinate, an uninhabited island and an inhabited archipelago are different geographic units and should not be placed in one undifferentiated leaderboard.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The word “land” matters as much as the word “farthest.” The standard oceanic-pole calculation includes islands, however small or remote, because an island coastline is still the nearest land boundary if it is the shortest reference. Replacing “any land” with “continental mainland” would create another pole and another answer.

Point Nemo’s location and distance

Coordinates

NOAA identifies Point Nemo at 48°52.6′S, 123°23.6′W, in the South Pacific Ocean. The coordinate is commonly called Point Nemo or the Pacific, or oceanic, pole of inaccessibility.

At that position, NOAA reports a distance of about 2,688 km (1,670 miles) to the nearest land. Because this is a rounded distance derived from geographic map data, it should be read as an approximately measured separation rather than a survey-grade value down to the final kilometer.

Nearest land points

NOAA names three proximity points around Point Nemo:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Ducie Island, to the north;
  • Motu Nui, to the northeast; and
  • Maher Island, to the south.

These are the nearest land points used to describe Point Nemo’s isolation. Calling them “nearest islands” is generally understandable, but “nearest land points” is more precise because the comparison concerns coastlines and map geometry, not population or political status. None should be interpreted as a nearby inhabited destination.

The three-way description is useful because Point Nemo is not separated from one single island by a dramatically greater margin than from all other land. The nearest-coast calculation checks the surrounding candidates and identifies the shortest separation; naming the three points shows which coastlines control that result. Their locations in different directions also illustrate why a map should not treat “nearest” as synonymous with “due north” or with the nearest large country.

An independent calculation

A 2007 peer-reviewed study by Garcia-Castellanos and Lombardo calculated the oceanic poles of inaccessibility from geographic data. For Point Nemo, it reported 2,690 ± 2 km from the coasts of Motu Nui, Maher Island and Ducie Island. That result agrees with NOAA’s rounded 2,688 km figure; the small difference reflects the data, method and rounding, not two competing locations.

The uncertainty notation belongs to the calculation, not to a claim that Point Nemo moves around. It indicates the precision supported by the geographic inputs and procedure. NOAA’s figure and the paper’s result should therefore be presented together as compatible estimates of roughly 2,690 kilometers.

How the oceanic pole is determined

1. Define land and ocean boundaries

A calculation begins with a geographic data set representing coastlines and islands. The result depends on how those boundaries are mapped, the resolution of the data and how small land features are handled.

2. Measure each ocean point to its closest coast

For a point in the ocean, the calculation looks for the shortest distance to any land boundary. A point can be thousands of kilometers from the nearest coast even when several islands lie in different directions; only the shortest of those distances controls the result.

3. Find the maximum of those minimum distances

The oceanic pole is the location where that nearest-land distance is as large as possible. Point Nemo sits in the South Pacific because the surrounding basin leaves it farther from every coastline than other candidate ocean locations under the same definition.

4. Check the result against the surrounding coastlines

Once a candidate maximum is found, the calculation must verify that no nearby coordinate has a larger minimum distance. The controlling coastlines are then identified, which is why Ducie Island, Motu Nui and Maher Island appear in descriptions of Point Nemo. A map label alone does not establish the result; the maximum-minimum comparison does.

Why the number is not infinitely precise

Coastlines are not perfectly fixed lines at every map scale. Islands have irregular shores, and a data set may represent a small island differently from another data set. Consequently, figures such as 2,688 km and 2,690 ± 2 km communicate the same practical fact: Point Nemo is roughly 2,690 km from its nearest land.

Small differences between published values are normal when one source rounds to whole kilometers and another reports an uncertainty interval. They do not justify moving Point Nemo to a different location or declaring a new winner without a fresh, consistently defined geospatial analysis.

Tristan da Cunha An inhabited archipelago Most remote inhabited archipelago 2,816 km to nearest land in South Africa and 3,360 km to South America UK Government and Royal Navy material; approximately 2013 source-era figures

The table does not provide one common ranking. Point Nemo’s 2,688 km is an ocean-to-land measurement. Bouvetøya’s figures are island-to-land separations, while Tristan da Cunha’s figures describe an inhabited archipelago’s distance from larger land masses. Comparing the raw numbers without the definitions would produce a misleading result.

There is no single supported leaderboard combining every remote island, ocean coordinate and settlement. A valid ranking would first have to choose one geographic unit, one coastline data set, one distance rule and one date. Until those choices are held constant, category labels are more informative than a list ordered by numbers that were measured differently.

Is Point Nemo the most remote place on Earth?

It is safest to say that Point Nemo is the farthest ocean location from land. That is the established superlative supported by NOAA and by the 2007 geographic calculation.

“Most remote place on Earth” is broader and potentially ambiguous. It could refer to the distance from a settlement, the nearest emergency service, the nearest regularly visited port, or the isolation of an inhabited community. The available evidence for Point Nemo does not establish a ranking under those measures. Calling it the most remote place in every possible sense overstates what the oceanic-pole calculation proves.

Point Nemo is also not an island or settlement. It is a latitude-and-longitude coordinate in open water. That distinction explains why an inhabited archipelago can be described as the most remote of its kind without displacing Point Nemo as the farthest ocean point from land.

How Bouvetøya fits the comparison

What the island claim means

Bouvetøya, also known as Bouvet Island, is an island in the South Atlantic. The Norwegian Polar Institute describes it as one of the most isolated islands and gives separations of 1,700 km to Dronning Maud Land and 1,600 km to Gough Island.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why it does not beat Point Nemo

Bouvetøya is being measured as land against other land. Point Nemo is being measured as an ocean coordinate against the nearest coast. The 1,600-km and 1,700-km island separations therefore do not challenge Point Nemo’s approximately 2,688-km ocean-to-land distance. They show that Bouvetøya is exceptionally isolated in the category of islands, not that it is farther from land than the Pacific oceanic pole.

What the source does and does not establish

The Norwegian Polar Institute’s wording supports calling Bouvetøya one of the most isolated islands. It does not, by itself, provide a complete ranking of every island in the world under one standardized measurement. A definitive island ranking would require a consistent coastline data set and a stated rule for which surrounding land counts.

How Tristan da Cunha fits the comparison

An inhabited-archipelago distinction

Tristan da Cunha is an inhabited archipelago. UK Government and Royal Navy material describes it as the most remote inhabited archipelago and gives approximately 2,816 km to the nearest land in South Africa and 3,360 km to South America.

Why those figures are different from Point Nemo’s

The Tristan da Cunha distances describe an archipelago’s relationship to major land areas. Point Nemo’s distance is the shortest route from an open-ocean coordinate to any of three nearby land points. The two measurements answer different questions, so neither location “wins” the other’s category.

Date and wording matter

The Tristan da Cunha distances are source-era figures from approximately 2013. They should not be presented as a current statement about population, transport or access. The supported conclusion is limited to the archipelago’s cited remoteness designation and the distances reported in that material.

Its inhabited status is central to the label. “Most remote inhabited archipelago” describes a community spread across islands, whereas Point Nemo has no resident population to rank. Removing the word “inhabited” would erase the distinction the designation is intended to make.

Why nearest land is not the same as nearest mainland

Point Nemo’s nearest land includes small islands. If a question instead asks for distance to a continental mainland, it is using a different baseline and will produce a different number. Excluding islands would move the reference coast and would no longer answer “farthest from any land.”

The same issue appears in island comparisons. An island may be far from a mainland but comparatively close to another island. A reliable statement must specify whether “nearest land” includes every island, whether it means a mainland coastline, or whether it means the nearest inhabited place. Without that qualifier, two apparently conflicting distance claims may both be correct for their own definitions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Distances can also be reported from different points on a geographic feature: a coast, a central coordinate, a harbor or a settlement. The Point Nemo figures use coastlines and land points, not a port or town. That is why they should not be compared directly with a travel distance measured between populated centers.

What the distances mean in practical terms

It is a geographic extreme, not a travel recommendation

Point Nemo identifies a location on a map. The fact that it is about 2,688 km from land does not make it a conventional destination, and the distance alone says nothing about routes, weather, permission, equipment or rescue arrangements. Treating the coordinate as an ordinary travel site confuses a cartographic distinction with an access claim.

Use the coordinate when mapping it

For a map or geographic-information project, enter 48°52.6′S, 123°23.6′W and label the marker “Point Nemo — oceanic pole of inaccessibility.” Keep the datum and map settings consistent when comparing it with other locations; changing the underlying coastline data can change the final rounded distance by a small amount.

Report the uncertainty with the number

A clear caption would say: “NOAA places Point Nemo at 48°52.6′S, 123°23.6′W, about 2,688 km from the nearest land; a 2007 peer-reviewed calculation reports 2,690 ± 2 km.” This preserves both sources without implying that the ocean has been measured to a false level of precision.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose the right unit for the audience

NOAA’s approximately 2,688 kilometers corresponds to about 1,670 miles. Retain kilometers when quoting the source, then add miles in parentheses for readers who use imperial units. Do not round one source to a whole number and present it as if it were a second independent measurement.

A decision guide for answering “which place is farthest?”

  1. Identify the geographic unit. Is the candidate an ocean coordinate, an island or an inhabited archipelago?
  2. Define the reference. Do you need distance to any land, to a mainland, to the nearest inhabited place or to a specific continent?
  3. Use a source with a stated method. Prefer a named geographic or government source and record its publication or update date.
  4. Keep units consistent. Convert kilometers to miles only after preserving the source’s original figure and its approximate or uncertainty notation.
  5. State the category in the conclusion. Say “farthest ocean point from land,” “isolated island” or “most remote inhabited archipelago,” rather than using “most remote” without a qualifier.

This checklist prevents a common error: selecting the largest-looking number from unrelated descriptions. A 3,360-km island-to-continent figure may be numerically larger than 2,688 km, yet it does not answer the ocean-point question. Classification comes before arithmetic.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Calling Point Nemo an island. It is a coordinate in open ocean.
  • Claiming it is farthest from all human activity. The supported result concerns distance to land.
  • Comparing island-to-mainland and ocean-to-island distances as one ranking. Those are different metrics.
  • Dropping the uncertainty. “2,690 ± 2 km” is a calculated result, while NOAA’s “about 2,688 km” is a rounded institutional figure.
  • Presenting source-era Tristan da Cunha figures as current access or population data. The cited material is approximately from 2013.
  • Turning Bouvetøya’s description into a complete world ranking. “One of the most isolated islands” does not establish a universally ordered list.
  • Using a mainland-only baseline without saying so. That silently changes the question from distance to any land.
  • Treating a map pin as a navigational destination. The coordinate establishes geographic location, not a safe or practical route.

Bottom line

Point Nemo is the correct answer when the question is, “Which place in the ocean is farthest from land?” NOAA’s coordinate is 48°52.6′S, 123°23.6′W, and its nearest land is about 2,688 km away. The 2007 Garcia-Castellanos and Lombardo calculation, at 2,690 ± 2 km, independently supports the same result. Bouvetøya and Tristan da Cunha remain important examples of isolation, but their claims describe an island and an inhabited archipelago—not the farthest open-ocean point from any land.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which place is farthest from land?

Point Nemo, the Pacific oceanic pole of inaccessibility, is the farthest point in the ocean from land. NOAA places it at 48°52.6′S, 123°23.6′W and about 2,688 km from the nearest land.

How far is Point Nemo from the nearest island?

NOAA reports approximately 2,688 km (1,670 miles) to the nearest land points, identified as Ducie Island, Motu Nui and Maher Island. A 2007 calculation reports 2,690 ± 2 km.

Is Point Nemo the most remote place on Earth?

It is the farthest ocean location from land. The broader phrase “most remote place on Earth” could mean distance from settlements, ports or services, which is a different measurement and is not established by the oceanic-pole calculation.

Is Bouvet Island farther from land than Point Nemo?

No direct comparison is valid because Bouvetøya is an island being measured against other land, while Point Nemo is an ocean coordinate measured to its nearest coast. The Norwegian Polar Institute gives Bouvetøya distances of 1,600 km to Gough Island and 1,700 km to Dronning Maud Land.

Why is Tristan da Cunha called remote?

UK Government and Royal Navy material describes Tristan da Cunha as the most remote inhabited archipelago, with approximately 2,816 km to nearest land in South Africa and 3,360 km to South America. Those figures describe an inhabited archipelago, not an open-ocean point.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do the three islands near Point Nemo mean it is close to land?

No. Ducie Island, Motu Nui and Maher Island are the three nearest land points, but each is roughly 2,690 km away. Naming them identifies the coastlines that control the distance calculation.

Why do sources give 2,688 km and 2,690 ± 2 km?

The figures come from different presentations of geographic calculations. NOAA gives a rounded approximately 2,688-km value, while Garcia-Castellanos and Lombardo’s 2007 peer-reviewed study reports 2,690 ± 2 km. They support the same practical distance.

Can Point Nemo be ranked by distance to the nearest mainland instead?

A mainland-only calculation is possible, but it answers a different question. The standard oceanic-pole definition includes every land boundary, including islands, so replacing it with mainland distance would change the baseline and potentially the location.

The Bottom Line

Point Nemo is the farthest ocean point from land. NOAA places it at 48°52.6′S, 123°23.6′W, about 2,688 km from Ducie Island, Motu Nui and Maher Island. Bouvetøya and Tristan da Cunha are remote under different island and inhabited-archipelago definitions.
