If you want a simple camera below $500, choose by the advantage you will actually use: a pocketable zoom, extra reach for distant subjects, or protection from water and drops. The five options below cover those needs, but their prices are dated U.S. checks—not guaranteed current offers—and their image quality should be judged by more than megapixels.

Which camera fits your kind of trip?
Canon PowerShot ELPH 360 HS A: a pocket zoom
The ELPH 360 HS A is the natural fit if a small carry size matters but you still want optical zoom. Canon’s U.S. catalog lists it at $379.99; a U.S. retailer listing showed $379 on September 19, 2026. Verify stock and the model designation at checkout, since catalog pricing does not guarantee availability.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Kodak PIXPRO AZ528: reach for distant subjects
The AZ528 is the long-zoom choice in this group, with a 52x zoom. That reach can help frame faraway details without changing lenses, but a large zoom multiplier alone does not tell you the lens’s actual focal-length range or how easy the camera is to carry. The $249.99 price was listed by a U.S. retailer on September 19, 2026, and no current official specification sheet or live offer is established here.
PENTAX WG-90: rugged close-ups
The WG-90 is positioned for rugged macro use. It is worth considering when close-up subjects and a camera intended for tougher conditions matter more than a slim pocket profile. The $346.95 figure was listed by a U.S. retailer on September 19, 2026; confirm the manufacturer’s precise protection ratings and macro capabilities before relying on it for a particular activity.
Rank #2
- 5-in-1 USB-C Hub: Experience comprehensive connectivity featuring a Power Delivery input, two USB-A 2.0 ports, a USB-A 3.0 port, and an HDMI port. (Note: The USB-C power delivery input port is only for connecting an external wall charger to power your laptop and cannot power peripheral devices.)
- 90W Pass-Through Charging: Achieve optimal charging with 90W pass-through power to your laptop, supported by a total input of 100W, with the hub reserving 10W for operational efficiency. (Note: Wall charger not included.)
- Quick Data Transfers: Accelerate your productivity with rapid data transfers using a high-speed 5Gbps USB 3.0 port and two 480Mbps USB 2.0 ports.
- 4K HDMI Display: Enhance your visual experience with a hub capable of delivering 4K resolution at 30Hz in both mirror and extend modes. Please note that this hub is compatible with MacBook (macOS 12 and newer), Windows 10 and 11, ChromeOS, and laptops equipped with DP Alt Mode and Power Delivery. Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.

Kodak PIXPRO FZ55: an economical pocket zoom
The FZ55 combines a low-cost role with a useful baseline of verified features: Kodak states a 5x optical zoom, 28mm wide-angle lens, rechargeable lithium-ion battery, and 1080p Full HD video. Kodak’s stated U.S. MSRP is $159.99, while a U.S. retailer listing showed $139.99 on September 19, 2026. The MSRP and retailer listing are different kinds of prices; neither guarantees today’s offer.
PENTAX WG-1000: waterproof use
The WG-1000 is the more affordable waterproof-oriented option in this group, with a U.S. retailer listing of $246.95 on September 19, 2026. The price alone does not establish what depth, duration, dust exposure, or impact the camera can withstand. Consult the manufacturer’s rating and limitations before taking it into water or harsh conditions.

How to choose: match the feature to the subject
- For distant subjects: Compare actual focal-length range as well as zoom ratio. A 12x pocket zoom and a 52x long-zoom camera serve different carrying and framing needs; the larger multiplier does not make the camera universally better.
- For travel carry: Consider whether the camera will fit your pocket or small bag, and whether its zoom or protection justifies any added bulk. Weights and dimensions for all five models are not established here, so check manufacturer specifications before deciding.
- For water, dust, or drops: Choose a model specifically rated for the conditions you expect. Do not assume an ordinary compact is waterproof, and do not treat a rugged label as a substitute for the exact limits in the manual.
- For dim interiors or evening scenes: Look at maximum lens aperture and stabilization, not megapixels alone. Consumer Reports’ 2026 buying guide notes that a wider maximum aperture helps capture images in low light and cautions that higher resolution does not always mean better photos. - For budget certainty: Confirm the full current price and stock at a U.S. retailer. Prices shown here were listed on September 19, 2026; Kodak’s FZ55 MSRP is a manufacturer price, not a promise of retailer pricing.
What a sub-$500 compact can—and cannot—offer
These cameras make the most sense when a dedicated camera feature matters: optical zoom, a camera-first set of controls, or protection for specific conditions. They should not be bought on the assumption that a small-sensor compact will automatically outperform a phone in every scene. Low-light performance is a particular trade-off to investigate, and a controlled image-quality comparison among these five models is not established here.
Budget also sets expectations. Consumer Reports’ 2026 guide places advanced point-and-shoots at $600 to $1,500 and up, so a camera below $500 is more likely to prioritize a particular use than to deliver every premium feature. For context, Digital Camera World describes the Panasonic Lumix ZS99/TZ99 as a 30x, 24–720mm-equivalent travel zoom with 4K video, stabilization, a tilting touchscreen, and built-in EVF, while noting small-sensor limits in low light and dynamic range. Its price and availability are volatile, so it is not counted among the five sub-$500 picks here. Digital Camera World

- Match the exact model name. Retailer listings can make similar names easy to confuse. The ELPH 360 HS A is the model named here; confirm the suffix and model details on the product page.
- Check the manufacturer’s product information. For waterproof or rugged use, confirm the formal rating and operating limits rather than relying on a retailer’s short description.
