There is no single best point-and-shoot camera for everyone. Choose the Sony RX100 VII or Canon G7 X Mark III for optical zoom and video flexibility, the Ricoh GR IV for a pocketable still camera, the Fujifilm X100VI for an enthusiast fixed-lens experience, or the OM System Tough TG-7 for rugged use. These are role-based picks, not five cameras judged on one shared rating scale; prices and availability vary by region and retailer.

What is the best point-and-shoot camera?

The best choice depends on what you expect a compact camera to do. A zoom lens lets you reframe without moving, while a fixed lens can suit a simpler still-photography setup. Sensor size, video features, pocketability, and weather protection also separate these models. The picks below reflect recommendations and specifications from current camera guides and Canon’s product page—not a common score or a head-to-head test of all five.

Which compact camera should I buy?

Camera Best fit Lens and standout features Main trade-off
Sony Cyber-shot RX100 VII All-around zoom compact Versatile zoom, tilting screen, pop-up electronic viewfinder, and stronger video capabilities, as described by RTINGS’ comparison and Digital Camera World’s guide. Premium cost and limited supply, according to Digital Camera World.
Ricoh GR IV Pocketable still photography TechRadar lists an APS-C sensor and a fixed 28mm-equivalent f/2.8–16 lens. No viewfinder; video tops out at 1080p, and the camera lacks weather sealing, according to TechRadar.
Fujifilm X100VI Enthusiast fixed-lens photography RTINGS highlights its high-resolution APS-C sensor, 35mm-equivalent f/2 lens, in-body stabilization, and hybrid optical/electronic viewfinder. Relatively large for a compact and often difficult to find in stock, according to RTINGS.
Canon PowerShot G7 X Mark III Photo/video hybrid Canon U.S.A. specifies a 4.2x optical zoom covering 24–100mm equivalent, optical image stabilization, and a tilting 3-inch LCD. TechRadar notes its microphone port and photo/video balance. Check availability rather than assuming it is in stock.
OM System Tough TG-7 Rugged use, water, and macro Digital Camera World highlights waterproof, freezeproof, crushproof, and drop/shockproof construction, plus built-in GPS and macro capability. It is a modest update over the TG-6 and has a 12MP sensor, according to Digital Camera World.

How the five cameras differ

Optical zoom or a fixed lens

The RX100 VII and G7 X Mark III have optical zoom, which offers flexibility when you cannot change your position or want to frame distant subjects. The GR IV and X100VI use fixed focal lengths instead. That can be a sensible trade if you prefer a dedicated field of view and do not need zoom range. RTINGS’ GR III versus RX100 VII comparison, updated August 2026, illustrates the general fixed-lens-versus-zoom trade-off; it compares the GR III, not the GR IV, so it should not be used as a source for GR IV specifications.

Sensor size and still-photo priorities

The GR IV and X100VI are the APS-C choices in this group. Their larger sensors are central to the recommendations in TechRadar’s and RTINGS’ guides, but sensor size alone does not guarantee a particular result: lens choice, exposure, focus, and shooting conditions matter. The TG-7’s 12MP specification is reported by Digital Camera World; megapixels alone do not establish which camera will make the better photograph.

Video requirements

If video matters, check recording resolution and handling rather than relying on a camera’s still-photo reputation. TechRadar says the GR IV tops out at 1080p and characterizes the G7 X Mark III as a stronger photo/video option. RTINGS likewise describes the RX100 VII as the more capable all-around option against the GR III, including for video. Those guide assessments do not establish a direct video ranking across all five models.

Pocketability and viewfinders

TechRadar frames the GR IV as a true pocket camera, but it has no viewfinder. The X100VI includes a hybrid optical/electronic viewfinder, although RTINGS notes that it is relatively large for a compact. The RX100 VII has a pop-up electronic viewfinder, according to RTINGS’ comparison. Think about whether you compose through a screen or a viewfinder and whether the camera must fit in a pocket every day.

Durability and outdoor use

The TG-7 is the distinct rugged-use option here, with protective construction and macro features identified by Digital Camera World. The GR IV is not weather sealed, according to TechRadar. Do not assume the other cameras offer the TG-7’s protection: check each manufacturer’s instructions before exposing a camera to water, dust, impact, or extreme temperatures.

Choose by the way you shoot

  • Choose the RX100 VII if you want a versatile zoom, a viewfinder, and video capability in one premium compact, and can find it at a price you accept.
  • Choose the GR IV if pocketability and still photography matter more than zoom, a viewfinder, weather sealing, or video above 1080p.
  • Choose the X100VI if you want an enthusiast fixed-lens camera with an APS-C sensor, stabilization, and a hybrid viewfinder, and are comfortable with its size and availability constraints.
  • Choose the G7 X Mark III if you want optical zoom and a camera positioned as a photo/video hybrid, including a microphone port. Confirm current stock before planning a purchase.
  • Choose the TG-7 if your priority is a camera designed for rougher conditions and macro shooting rather than a large sensor or a more general-purpose zoom.

Check price and stock before you decide

Availability and pricing can change, especially for popular premium compacts. Digital Camera World flags limited supply for the RX100 VII, while RTINGS notes that the X100VI can be difficult to find in stock. Check a local retailer or authorized dealer for current price, condition, warranty, and delivery region before treating any recommendation as an immediate buy.
