To get more from a podcast episode, pause afterward and write down what you remember, one question or connection it raised, and one small next step. This optional routine turns listening into recall and application without requiring a special app, notebook, or transcript.
Why add a step after listening?
Listening can be worthwhile for entertainment alone. But if you want to remember or use an episode’s ideas, replaying it is not the only option: try retrieving its main point from memory, then decide what deserves a closer look.
Carnegie Mellon University’s Eberly Center describes retrieval practice as recalling information from memory, using examples such as quizzes and flashcards. Writing a few points after a podcast is a practical adaptation of that learning principle—not a podcast routine tested by the center. Carnegie Mellon Eberly Center on retrieval practice
A short write-after-listening routine
- Recall before checking. Close the player and, without replaying or consulting notes, write the episode’s central idea and any supporting point you can remember.
- Choose one response. Add a question, disagreement, connection to something you already know, or possible application. You do not need all four.
- Pick a small next step. Decide whether to test the idea, explain it to someone, check a claim against another source, or simply save the question for later.
- Use references when precision matters. If you need an exact quotation or detail, consult a transcript or replay the relevant passage after your initial recall.
A notebook or digital note is enough; the useful part is the act of recalling and deciding what to do next, not the tool used to capture it.

What research does—and does not—say
A 2025 study of assigned podcasts at two Midwestern public universities found that access mode—audio, transcript, or both—was less important to exam performance than engagement with the material. The authors reported that some forms of note-taking offered advantages and multitasking disadvantaged students. The finding concerns university coursework and exams; it does not prove that this particular routine improves retention for every casual listener. 2025 study of podcast access and engagement

Not necessarily, but the available findings address different situations. In a randomized crossover trial, 96 emergency medicine residents were recruited; 95 completed initial recall and 92 completed delayed recall. The researchers found no statistically significant difference in immediate or 30-day recall between residents who exercised while listening and those who listened seated and undistracted. That result applies to this population and study material; it does not show that every kind of multitasking is harmless. Gottlieb et al., Academic Medicine, 2024

The university podcast study, by contrast, associated multitasking with poorer exam performance in students using assigned course material. Exercise during listening in a resident trial and multitasking during coursework are not the same condition, so neither result should be generalized into a blanket rule about walking, exercise, or divided attention.
