PNG-8 can be an efficient choice for a poster with a limited palette, but the claim that it was smaller and cleaner than every JPEG cannot be verified without the poster and export details. File size and visual appearance are separate results, and neither follows from the format names alone.
Why PNG-8 can suit a poster
PNG indexed color stores each pixel as an index into a palette of RGB colors; a transparency table can also describe transparent or partially transparent palette entries. The W3C PNG specification says indexed-color representation may be more efficient when an image has 256 or fewer distinct pixel values and meets the specification’s sample-depth and alpha constraints. That is conditional guidance, not a guarantee that a PNG-8 export will be smaller than a JPEG.
A poster with broad areas of flat color may be a plausible candidate for indexed color, but the actual palette, dithering, transparency needs, dimensions, and encoder settings all matter. The title’s description of a “red poster” does not establish how many distinct colors its pixels contain.

Why the JPEG result cannot be generalized
JPEG uses lossy compression and does not offer indexed-color mode, according to MDN’s image format guide. That distinction helps explain why two formats may encode an image differently; it does not show that every JPEG export must be larger or look worse. The result depends in part on the image and the JPEG encoder’s settings.

“Cleaner” also needs a defined visual meaning. It could refer to smoother edges, fewer compression artifacts, less visible banding, or another characteristic. Without the poster, the exported files, and a stated viewing or measurement method, there is no basis to judge which looked cleaner.
What would verify the poster comparison
The available sources do not provide the poster, its export settings, file sizes, or a controlled visual comparison. The claim that PNG-8 beat every JPEG in both size and appearance therefore remains unverified. To substantiate it, compare the actual outputs and report:

- File size: the encoded byte size of each output.
- Image and palette: dimensions, distinct-color count, palette choices, and whether dithering was used.
- Transparency: whether it was needed and preserved.
- JPEG settings: the encoder and quality or compression setting for each JPEG.
- Visual method: the specific defects being judged, with outputs viewed at the same dimensions and under the same conditions.
Keep the two conclusions separate: which file was smaller, and which looked cleaner under the stated comparison. A result for those particular exports would not establish that PNG-8 wins against all JPEG settings or images.
