Punjab National Bank (PNB) reported a 13% year-over-year increase in standalone net profit for the second quarter of financial year 2027. The improvement came alongside higher net interest income, sharply lower bad-loan ratios and reduced provisions, although operating-profit growth was more modest because treasury income fell.
PNB Managing Director and CEO Ashok Chandra also said the bank plans to popularise its recurring-deposit (RD) product while stock markets remain volatile. The bank has not published a launch date, special-scheme name, interest rate, tenure or eligibility rules, so customers should not treat the announcement as an available new product yet.
PNB’s Q2 FY27 results at a glance
The figures are for PNB’s standalone quarter ended September 2026, as reported from the bank’s regulatory disclosures.
| Metric | Q2 FY27 | Comparable period | Change or context |
|---|---|---|---|
| Net profit | ₹5,532 crore | ₹4,904 crore | 13% year over year |
| Total income | ₹38,185 crore | ₹36,214 crore | Higher than the comparable period |
| Operating profit | ₹7,532 crore | ₹7,227 crore | Increase, but slower than net-profit growth |
| Net interest income (NII) | ₹11,601 crore | Not stated in the cited reports | About 10% year-over-year growth |
| Gross non-performing assets (GNPA) | 2.55% | 3.45% | Improved by 90 basis points |
| Net non-performing assets (NNPA) | 0.25% | 0.36% | Improved by 11 basis points |
| Provisions | ₹97 crore | ₹643 crore | Substantially lower charge |
PNB’s global net interest margin was reported at 2.58%, while deposits stood at ₹17.77 lakh crore. These figures indicate that the quarter’s profit was supported by core interest income and a lower credit-cost burden, not only by one-off market gains.

Why net profit grew faster than operating profit
Operating profit rose to ₹7,532 crore from ₹7,227 crore, whereas net profit increased by 13%. The difference reflects the sharp reduction in provisions: the charge dropped to ₹97 crore from ₹643 crore in the comparable period.
Chandra said treasury profit was also weaker. PNB earned ₹753 crore from treasury operations in Q2 FY27, compared with ₹1,769 crore in the same period of the previous financial year. His explanation means the reported earnings growth was achieved despite a much smaller treasury contribution.

Asset quality and capital strength improved
Gross bad loans fell to 2.55% of advances from 3.45%, and net bad loans declined to 0.25% from 0.36%. A lower NNPA ratio indicates that the residual stressed-loan exposure after provisions was smaller than a year earlier.
- Provision coverage ratio (PCR): 97.32%, indicating a high level of provisioning against identified bad loans.
- Capital adequacy ratio (CRAR): 17.95%, showing the reported capital buffer under the applicable regulatory measure.
- Net interest income: ₹11,601 crore, approximately 10% higher year over year.
These measures do not eliminate future credit risk, but they provide evidence that the quarter’s profit increase coincided with better reported asset-quality ratios and lower provisions.

What PNB said about the recurring-deposit campaign
PNB already offers recurring deposits, but Chandra said the bank intends to promote the product more aggressively because of continuing stock-market volatility. He described the RD as a way to provide a “safe return” to customers and depositors.
“We are planning to launch the RD scheme. We have the RD scheme, but we are going to popularise this now considering what is happening in the stock market.”
The wording indicates a planned marketing push or campaign around an existing product; it does not establish that a newly redesigned account has launched. The reviewed announcement does not specify:
- an official campaign or product name;
- interest rates or whether rates vary by customer category;
- minimum monthly instalment;
- available maturities or premature-closure rules;
- eligibility, nomination or documentation requirements;
- tax treatment; or
- the launch date and application channel.
Customers should wait for PNB’s formal terms and verify them through the bank’s official channels before opening an account or transferring funds.
Best Value
How an RD differs from market-linked investing
An RD generally involves fixed periodic deposits and a stated maturity value under the bank’s published terms. That structure offers predictability, but the return is limited to the applicable deposit rate and the account’s conditions. Equity investments, by contrast, can rise or fall with market prices and do not provide a guaranteed maturity amount.
PNB’s comments refer to volatility, not to a measured market-wide bear phase. The available announcement gives no index level, percentage decline or defined period that would support calling the market definitively bearish. The campaign therefore appears aimed at customers seeking predictable deposits during uncertain markets, rather than being evidence that equities will fall.
Management outlook
Management guidance cited with the results called for credit growth of 13% to 14% and a net interest margin target of 2.6% to 2.7%. These are forward-looking targets, not achieved Q2 figures. Actual performance will depend on loan demand, funding costs, interest rates, recoveries and future treasury results.
