A permanent magnet DC (PMDC) generator uses permanent magnets to create its magnetic field. When its armature rotates in that field, voltage is induced; a commutator and brushes deliver a unidirectional output. Its generated voltage changes with rotational speed and magnetic flux, while the voltage available at its terminals also depends on the machine and connected circuit.
What is a PMDC generator?
A PMDC generator is a direct-current machine whose field comes from permanent magnets rather than an energized field winding. The name describes its field source and its DC output; it does not imply a particular voltage, power rating, or application. How does a permanent magnet DC generator work?
Permanent magnets establish the field
Magnets fixed in the machine provide magnetic flux across the armature region. Unlike a generator with a wound field, a PMDC machine does not normally regulate its field by varying current through a field winding.
Armature rotation induces voltage
As the armature winding turns through the magnetic field, its conductors experience changing magnetic flux and an electromotive force (EMF) is induced. Commutation makes the external output unidirectional
The voltage induced in an individual rotating coil changes direction during rotation. The commutator switches the coil connections as the armature turns, and brushes transfer the resulting output to the external circuit with one polarity. This is why a brushed DC generator can provide a unidirectional terminal output even though the voltage in each coil alternates as it rotates. What determines a PMDC generator’s output voltage?
For a DC generator, generated EMF is proportional to magnetic flux and rotational speed, with additional design factors such as conductor count, pole count, and the number of armature parallel paths. In a PMDC machine, the magnets supply the field, so speed and the machine’s design are important determinants; the field is not normally adjusted with a field-winding current.

Generated EMF is not the same as the voltage measured at the terminals under every condition. Internal machine behavior and the connected circuit affect terminal voltage, so a generator should not be assumed to hold a fixed voltage as speed or load changes. Use the particular machine’s ratings and documentation for its intended operating conditions.
Where might you encounter one?
A documented example is the University of Alberta’s motor-generator laboratory. Its setup uses a PMDC machine as a generator with a load box in a torque experiment. The university explains: “The PMDC generator will be used with the load box to create a current in the PMDC machine which is proportional to the torque on the shaft by the relationship of τ = kφia.” This is an example of a lab use, not a universal description of PMDC generator applications.

For broader study, TU Delft’s course covers DC machines and PMDC machines, while Muhammad Ali Jinnah University’s curriculum includes DC generators and permanent-magnet machines. These educational references establish their place in electrical-machine instruction, but do not establish how common PMDC generators are in consumer or industrial products.
How do you choose or compare a PMDC generator?
Start with the machine’s nameplate and documentation, then check whether its mechanical arrangement and operating conditions fit the planned setup. The University of Alberta laboratory page advises inspecting nameplate voltage, current, power, and speed ratings.

- Voltage: Compare the rated voltage with the requirements of the intended circuit and load.
- Current: Check the rated current against the load’s expected demand.
- Power: Confirm that the stated power rating is suitable for the planned use.
- Speed: Check the rated speed against the prime mover and expected operating range.
- Mechanical fit: Verify shaft, mounting, and coupling compatibility using the unit’s documentation.
- Operating suitability: Confirm that the prime mover and load are appropriate for that specific machine.
Do not treat a rating or machine constant from a university lab setup as a general PMDC specification. Compare actual units by their own nameplates and technical documentation.

What a PMDC generator does—and does not—tell you
The permanent magnets provide the field, armature rotation induces voltage, and the commutator and brushes produce a unidirectional external output. Those facts explain the operating principle, but the label PMDC alone does not establish a machine’s output rating, efficiency, lifespan, or suitability for a given application. Those depend on the specific unit and its documented conditions.
