For standard right-hand pipe threads, wrap plumber’s tape clockwise when looking at the male threaded end. That’s the direction the mating fitting turns to tighten, so the tape is less likely to unwind as you assemble the joint.
Which direction should you wrap plumber’s tape?
Wrap the tape clockwise around the male threads, viewed from the open end of the threaded pipe. A quick check: the tape should follow the direction the fitting will turn as you tighten it. Oatey’s step-by-step guide describes this as wrapping clockwise in the same direction the fitting turns during assembly; Boshart gives the same direction for right-hand threads in its application instructions.
This rule applies to ordinary right-hand threads. If a fitting has a different thread direction or its manufacturer specifies another method, follow the fitting’s instructions.

- Check the connection and choose compatible tape. Read the fitting and system instructions, then select tape rated for the application. Oatey distinguishes general-use, gas-line, water-line, and stainless-steel tape; its product guidance recommends yellow gas-line PTFE tape for natural-gas installations. Do not assume one tape suits every system.
- Clean the male threads. Remove dirt and debris so the tape can lie against the threads, as advised by Oatey and Boshart.
- Wrap tautly in the tightening direction. For standard right-hand threads, start at the end and wrap clockwise when looking at the threaded end. Keep the tape snug against the threads rather than loose.
- Use the wrap count specified for the tape and fitting. There is no single count for every tape width and application. Oatey’s project guide, published November 8, 2023, recommends two to four overlapping passes. Its product FAQ gives three to five wraps for certain 1/2-, 3/4-, and 1-inch pipe threads when the tape width matches the pipe size, and four to five wraps for larger threads or narrower tape. Swagelok’s thread-sealant tape card, revised October 2011, specifies two to three revolutions for the tapered-thread application described there. Follow the instructions for your particular product and connection.
- Keep tape out of the opening. Oatey advises starting one or two threads back. Swagelok says tape should not extend past or overhang the first thread, because loose material could shred into the fluid system.
- Assemble and check the joint as directed. Tape does not make an unsuitable connection type suitable for tape, and it is not a substitute for the system’s assembly instructions.
When plumber’s tape is not the right seal
Flare, compression, and other non-tapered connections
Do not apply tape indiscriminately to every threaded-looking connection. Oatey says not to use thread tape on flare or compression fittings, which seal at their mating surfaces. Swagelok’s tape card is for male tapered pipe threads and excludes flared, coned, and tube-fitting ends.

Plastic female fittings
Boshart warns against PTFE tape on NPT connections with plastic female PVC fittings, including Schedule 40 or 80. Tape adds bulk and lubricates the joint, which can raise the risk of cracking. For that described application, Boshart suggests a compatible thread-sealing compound; check the fitting maker’s directions before choosing a sealant.
System-specific threaded adapters
Some systems provide precise instructions that differ from general guidance. For its threaded adapters, Aquatherm’s December 12, 2019 bulletin specifies two wraps of half-inch PTFE tape, applied clockwise, and advises tape or sealant intended for plastic fittings. It also warns against bottoming out the adapter or tightening more than one or two turns past hand-tight. Those directions apply to Aquatherm’s system, not as a universal tightening rule.
