Great Britain’s interim rules create a socket-connected route for compliant solar-only kits, but they do not make battery systems such as Anker SOLIX Solarbank 4 plug-in products. A qualifying kit is limited to 800VA, must meet the official product specification and is intended to connect using its supplied plug. Solarbank 4, by contrast, currently requires installation by a registered qualified electrician on a dedicated hardwired circuit.
What counts as plug-in solar in Great Britain?
The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) defines plug-in solar in its interim product specification as single-phase equipment with a maximum apparent power of 800VA. The specified kit includes at least one solar PV module, a grid-following microinverter, a connection lead fitted with a BS 1363 plug and a mounting system. It is intended to connect using the manufacturer-supplied plug—not through an improvised connection or a different inverter-and-cable combination. Read the GB Plug-in Solar Device Interim Product Specification (version 2).
The specification allows one plug-in solar product per household. DESNZ says only devices compliant with the interim product specification may be sold and plugged in under the relevant amendment to the Plugs and Sockets etc. (Safety) Regulations 1994. That makes compliance—not simply a product’s “balcony solar” or “plug-in” marketing label—the key test.
The scope is Great Britain. The specification refers to G98 requirements in Great Britain; Northern Ireland has separate G98/NI requirements, and the document says application of this specification there remains subject to further consideration. Do not assume that a product eligible under this GB route automatically has the same status in Northern Ireland.

Does the socket route include a battery?
No. The interim specification excludes plug-in battery systems and solar PV devices integrated with battery systems. The government consultation outcome confirms that the specification applies specifically to plug-in solar and does not extend to plug-in batteries. It is a limited route for compliant solar-only products, not a general permission to connect any home battery or hybrid inverter to a wall socket. See DESNZ’s consultation outcome and regulatory position.
DESNZ said it intends to proceed with the proposed regulatory amendments and specification, with refinements, and to issue consumer guidance alongside commencement of the regulations. Its consultation received 466 responses, and more than 85% of respondents agreed with the interim specification. Those figures describe consultation responses, not the views of the public as a whole.

Is Anker SOLIX Solarbank 4 a plug-in solar kit?
No—not under the interim solar-only socket route described here. Anker’s UK product page says Solarbank 4 currently must be installed by a registered qualified electrician on a dedicated hardwired circuit. Although Anker says the hardware is designed to support a plug-in connection, it also says that method is not currently permitted. The government specification independently excludes battery-integrated PV devices from its plug-in solar scope. Check Anker SOLIX’s Solarbank 4 Pro product information.

The product page says operation without a smart meter lacks household load monitoring and does not support anti-backflow functionality. Check current product documentation and compatibility before choosing accessories.
How to assess a plug-in kit before buying
A product that looks like a solar panel with a plug is not necessarily within the interim specification. Before purchase, check the product and its documentation against the official scope.

- Confirm the system is solar-only. If a battery is integrated into the PV device or the product is a plug-in battery system, it is outside this route.
- Look for evidence of compliance with the interim specification. Do not treat general claims such as “balcony solar” or “plug-in” as proof of eligibility.
- Check the specified components and connection. The defined kit includes a PV module, grid-following microinverter, mounting system and a lead with a BS 1363 plug, and is intended to be used with the manufacturer-supplied plug.
- Check the rating and household limit. The specification sets a maximum apparent power of 800VA and one plug-in solar product per household.
- Assess mounting and property suitability. The specification includes a mounting system, but that does not establish that a particular roof, balcony or outdoor location is suitable. Check the mounting instructions and the conditions at your property.
- Verify the applicable national requirements. The cited specification is for Great Britain; check the separate requirements relevant to Northern Ireland rather than assuming the GB route applies there.
The official sources establish the category and product scope, but they do not provide a verified retail shortlist or a household-specific savings estimate. No annual savings or payback period should be inferred from the 800VA limit or a product’s rated capacity alone.
What does the safety evidence show?
DESNZ published an electrical safety study on 16 June 2026. Its summary says representative plug-in PV devices operated safely under the tested conditions, with stable behaviour, effective protective-device operation and no evidence of sustained unsafe energisation or unacceptable thermal effects. The study also reported variation in export-limitation behaviour and electromagnetic compatibility, and said a UK-specific product specification would be beneficial. Read the government’s plug-in solar electrical safety study.

These findings concern representative equipment in defined tests; they are not a guarantee that every product, household circuit or installation is safe. The specification’s limits and product requirements matter, and battery-integrated systems remain outside this socket route.
Which option fits which household?
| Decision point | Compliant solar-only plug-in kit | Anker SOLIX Solarbank 4 |
|---|---|---|
| Socket-route status | May use the GB route if compliant with the interim specification; the route is limited to one product per household and 800VA maximum apparent power. | Not eligible as a plug-in product under the solar-only route because it is a battery-integrated system. |
| Storage | No battery in the plug-in solar device under this specification. | Solarbank 4 E5000 Pro is listed by Anker with 5,024Wh rated energy. |
| Installation | Intended to connect using its manufacturer-supplied BS 1363 plug, subject to compliance with the specification. | Anker currently requires a registered qualified electrician and a dedicated hardwired circuit; it says plug-in use is not currently permitted. |
| Capacity and output | Maximum apparent power: 800VA under the specification. | Anker lists 5,000W maximum PV input and 2,500W single-device rated power for Solarbank 4 E5000 Pro; these are manufacturer specifications. |
| Monitoring and export control | Features depend on the specific compliant product; the cited specification does not establish a retail model shortlist. | Anker says a compatible smart meter provides household load monitoring; without one, the system does not support anti-backflow functionality. |
| Household savings or payback | No verified household-specific estimate is established by the cited sources. | No comparable annual savings or installation-cost figure is established by the cited sources. |
The practical choice is therefore not simply between two plug-in products. A household seeking a limited solar-only system should verify specification compliance and mounting suitability. A household seeking integrated storage should treat Solarbank 4 as a hardwired system and account for its electrician requirement. How useful either option is will depend on factors such as daytime electricity use and tariff, but the cited material does not support a numerical savings forecast.
