Re-encoding a Plex library can reclaim storage, but the amount depends on the source files, encoding choices, and whether the resulting quality and playback compatibility work for your household. The headline’s “half empty again” outcome is a personal result, not a reliable forecast: the available evidence does not identify the tool used or verify that exact space change.
What re-encoding changes—and what Plex does during playback
A library re-encode processes stored media files and writes smaller replacements. That is different from Plex’s playback transcoder, which converts a file on the fly when a client cannot play its format. Plex says playback transcoding can be CPU-intensive and uses temporary storage; multiple simultaneous transcodes can consume gigabytes (Plex: Transcoding Media).
Automated library tools can manage a batch of conversions rather than waiting for a viewer to play each file. Unmanic describes itself as open-source software for automating media-library organization and conversion; its documentation covers using FFmpeg to compress files and remove unneeded streams, attachments, or metadata (Unmanic documentation). Tdarr describes conditional-based automation for transcoding and remuxing, including H.264-to-H.265 conversions and CPU or GPU workers using FFmpeg or HandBrake (Tdarr documentation). These are possible tools, not confirmation of which one produced the headline’s result.
How much space might a re-encode save?
There is no established typical saving for a whole Plex library in the cited sources. Tdarr’s product page gives an example claim that converting H.264 video to H.265 can save 50% in file size (Tdarr). Treat that as a vendor example, not a measured result for your files or a guarantee that every title will shrink by half.

- Easily store and access 5TB of content on the go with the Seagate portable drive, a USB external hard Drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
Results vary by source, encoder settings, and the quality threshold you choose. A smaller output is not automatically a better result if visible quality suffers or a Plex client cannot play it directly. Compare a sample of representative files before committing the whole library, and assess final size, visible quality, encode time and processor or GPU workload, and playback on the devices you actually use. The available sources do not establish a universally winning preset or a controlled comparison across encoders and devices.
Plan for temporary working space
Some workflows need room to create a converted file before replacing the original. Tdarr says it transcodes files into a cache folder and then copies them back to the source library to replace the original; it notes that a low-cost SSD can be used for that cache (Tdarr storage documentation). The cache is temporary working space, not the final amount reclaimed. You need enough available capacity for the files being processed, but the cited documentation does not specify a universally sufficient cache size.

An SSD cache is an optional workflow choice, not a requirement for every tool or setup. Before starting a large batch, check where the cache and source library reside and whether the volume has room for the conversion workflow.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCheck what is actually filling the drive
If the free-space change does not match the media files you converted, identify the volume and directory that changed before attributing the difference to video. Plex’s server data directory can contain database information, metadata, artwork, and caches; Plex specifically identifies preview thumbnails and downloads as possible storage consumers (Plex: Why is my Plex Media Server directory so large?). Playback transcodes also use temporary storage. Plex lists storage among the general constraints affecting a server (Plex: Network and server requirements).

- Easily store and access 1TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive.Specific uses: Personal
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop. Reformatting may be required for Mac
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required

- The available storage capacity may vary.
Measure the library folder and Plex server data directory separately, and note which drive each is on. That makes it easier to distinguish space reclaimed by smaller media files from space used by metadata, downloads, thumbnails, or temporary transcodes.

Before you re-encode the whole library
- Choose representative test files. Include different source formats and content types from your library so a single easy-to-compress file does not set expectations for everything.
- Set a quality threshold before optimizing for size. Inspect converted files on the screens and at the viewing distance you normally use; reject settings that produce unacceptable results.
- Check direct playback on your Plex clients. Confirm that the converted format plays as intended on the devices in your household, rather than assuming the smallest file is the best fit.
- Confirm cache and replacement locations. For a cache-based workflow, verify that the working volume has room and that you understand how the tool replaces or handles originals.
- Run a limited batch, then measure. Compare actual output sizes and playback behavior before expanding the job to the full library.
