When Plex or Jellyfin cannot find a title, chooses the wrong film, or shows incomplete artwork and credits, the cause is usually the identification chain rather than the video file itself. Plex first scans filenames and folders, then a metadata agent matches the item and retrieves details. Jellyfin uses the same basic inputs but also supports explicit provider IDs in movie and show names. Correct the library type and naming first, then use each server’s own matching, provider, source, and refresh controls.
Why is Plex or Jellyfin not finding my movie?
Both servers build a library in stages. They inspect the directory structure and filename, decide what kind of media the file represents, identify a title, and then obtain metadata such as summaries, posters, cast, genres, or release information. A failure at one stage can look like a failure at another, so the first diagnostic question is whether the title itself is wrong or whether the title is correct but some fields are missing.
The scanner and metadata matcher do different jobs
Plex describes a scanner that analyzes files and folder structure. The scanner supplies information to a metadata agent, which then matches the item and gathers richer information from local or online sources. A file can therefore be visible in a library while still having an incorrect match or sparse metadata.
Jellyfin also relies on names and folders, and its documentation adds a way to remove ambiguity: you can put a metadata-provider identifier in a movie or show filename or folder. Jellyfin says this improves identification accuracy, particularly when several titles share a name.

Separate a bad match from an incomplete record
- Wrong title, year, or series: treat this as an identification problem. Check the library type, naming, folder placement, and (for Jellyfin) provider IDs. In Plex, use the matching controls.
- Correct title but wrong poster, cast, summary, or artwork: inspect the configured metadata providers, their priority, and the data available in the provider record. A correct match does not guarantee that every provider has the field or image you want.
- File is absent entirely: check that it is in a library Plex or Jellyfin is scanning and that the library type fits the media. A metadata edit cannot repair a file the scanner never classified.
How do I fix a wrong match in Plex?
1. Verify the library type and organization
Start with the folder that contains the file. Plex’s scanner uses directory structure and filenames to determine content type and, in many cases, the item itself. Put movies in a movie library, episodic content in a television library, and use a consistent folder hierarchy. Rename files according to Plex’s current naming and organization guidance rather than relying on a descriptive phrase in the file name alone.
Do not begin by changing posters or editing fields. If Plex has identified the wrong title, those edits are attached to the wrong record and may be lost when the item is rematched.
2. Let scanning and matching finish
After a rename or move, allow the library scan and metadata matching process to complete. A partially processed item can temporarily show a generic title or limited artwork. If the item remains unmatched after processing, continue to the manual matching step instead of repeatedly rescanning the same folder.
3. Use Plex’s Fix Match or Match control
For an item that exists but is associated with the wrong title, open that item’s action menu and choose the available Fix Match or Match command. Search for the intended title and select the correct result, checking year, season, episode, or other distinguishing details before confirming. The exact menu wording can vary with the Plex server and client version; the function is the same: replace the association rather than merely editing visible fields.

If Plex cannot find the desired result, return to the filename and folder check. The matching screen cannot compensate for a file that is placed in the wrong library or named so ambiguously that the scanner supplies the wrong content type.
4. Check the agent and source priority
Plex agents can draw from local information and online sources. Their source order influences which summaries, artwork, and other fields are selected. Open the library’s metadata-agent settings, identify the enabled sources, and review their priority. A source that has the poster you prefer may need to be placed ahead of another source.
This is a metadata-quality problem, not necessarily a matching problem. If the title and year are correct but the poster is not, changing the match search is usually less useful than changing the source selection.

5. Refresh existing items after source changes
Plex’s agent guidance says to refresh all metadata when a source-setting change should apply to content already in the library. Changing an agent on an existing library affects future content according to that guidance, so do not assume that a setting change will rewrite every existing item automatically. Use the documented refresh action for the affected library or items, and expect the refresh to replace fields that are controlled by the selected sources.

6. Use local metadata where Plex supports it
Plex documents Local Media Assets for music in the context of embedded metadata. When that source is enabled, Plex can read tags stored in most music formats. This is useful when your own artist, album, track, or artwork information should take precedence over an online result. It is not a universal instruction for every Plex media type: support and precedence depend on the format and the library’s agent configuration.
How do I use provider IDs in Jellyfin?
Put an identifier in the movie or show name
Jellyfin’s “Metadata Provider Identifiers” documentation states: “To improve the accuracy of media identification, you can manually specify a metadata provider identifier for each movie or show.” Add the identifier to the relevant movie or series filename or folder, then rescan the library. The documented examples are:

Jellyfin documents TMDB, TVDB, and OMDb (English only) as supported identifier providers. It also documents aliases and allows the identifier to be enclosed in square brackets, parentheses, or braces. Multiple provider IDs may be supplied when you want more than one source to identify the same item.

Use the ID on the right level
For a single movie, place the ID in the movie folder or filename that Jellyfin scans. For a series, place the series identifier on the series folder or name so that the episodes inherit the correct show identity. Keep the media in the appropriate movie or television library; an ID does not turn a music or book file into a film.

After changing a name, trigger a library scan and let identification complete. If the old record persists, remove or correct the stale item according to your server’s current library behavior before rescanning. Do not copy Jellyfin’s bracketed syntax into Plex: the reviewed Plex guidance describes naming and matching tools, while this exact provider-ID syntax belongs to Jellyfin.
How do I add tags or metadata?
Movies and television
First obtain the correct match. In Plex, use Fix Match or Match, then adjust available metadata fields in the item’s edit panel. In Jellyfin, use the item’s metadata editor for fields exposed by your server version, or make the identification deterministic with a provider ID before editing. A tag or genre added to the wrong record will not solve a matching error.
Field names and editor placement change between server releases and media types. Treat labels such as tags, genres, collections, studios, and people as separate fields: changing a poster does not change a genre, and adding a tag does not repair an incorrect provider match.
Music
Plex’s documented Local Media Assets path can read embedded metadata in most music formats when that source is enabled. Check the tags in the audio files themselves, enable the local source where appropriate, and refresh the affected music metadata. Because the documentation is format-qualified, verify the behavior for the particular audio container and tag format you use.

Jellyfin can also use embedded audio metadata, but the fields it displays and the precedence between embedded and online data depend on the library’s provider configuration. Correct the file tags when you need portable information that can travel with the audio, then rescan or refresh the library.
Books and comics in Jellyfin
Jellyfin’s books documentation describes embedded metadata and external sidecar files for relevant formats. EPUB and similar book files may use content.opf or metadata.opf; comic files may use ComicInfo.xml. Keep the sidecar associated with the book it describes and use the exact filename and format expected by that media type. These examples do not establish a universal sidecar rule for every format, nor do they prove that Plex will read the same files.
Plugins and collections in Jellyfin
Jellyfin plugins are optional extensions. Its official plugin listing describes metadata plugins that can scrape a new source or modify existing metadata. The listing also includes TMDb Box Sets, which can create collections from TMDB collections. Plugin availability and compatibility depend on the Jellyfin server version and the current catalog, so confirm both before installing or relying on a plugin. A plugin is an extension of the metadata workflow, not a replacement for correct filenames and folders.

The systems overlap in their dependence on clear organization, but their correction methods are not interchangeable. Plex’s documented remedy centers on its matching tools and agent configuration. Jellyfin’s distinctive remedy is an explicit provider ID in the filename or folder.
Troubleshooting checklist
The title is missing from the library
- Confirm the file is inside a library path that the server scans.
- Confirm the library type matches the media: movie, television, music, book, or another supported category.
- Check spelling, folder placement, and filename structure.
- Run a library scan and wait for processing to finish.
- If the item still does not appear, inspect server logs or the library’s current naming guidance rather than adding random tags.
The wrong film or series is selected
- Check the year and title in the filename and folder.
- In Plex, use Fix Match or Match and select the result with the correct distinguishing details.
- In Jellyfin, add a documented provider ID such as
[tmdbid-680],[tvdbid-79168], or[imdbid-tt12801262]to the relevant name or folder. - Rescan and verify that episodes remain under the intended series.
The title is correct but the artwork or summary is wrong
- Review the active metadata providers and their priority.
- Check whether the provider record actually contains the missing field or preferred artwork.
- In Plex, refresh metadata after changing source settings when the change must affect existing items.
- In Jellyfin, consider a compatible metadata plugin only after confirming its current availability and scope.
My embedded tags or sidecar file are ignored
- Verify that the media type and file format are among those documented for embedded or external metadata.
- Check the exact sidecar filename, such as
content.opf,metadata.opf, orComicInfo.xmlfor applicable Jellyfin book and comic formats. - Ensure the local metadata source is enabled where the server requires it.
- Rescan or refresh the item after correcting the file, and remember that provider data may still supply fields not present locally.
A refresh makes an item look worse
A refresh can replace fields controlled by the selected provider. Before refreshing a large library, test the source and priority on a small set of items, and keep a copy of any local artwork or file tags you need to preserve. If the title itself changes, fix the match first; if only artwork or summaries change, adjust source selection instead.
Version and maintenance cautions
Server interfaces, legacy agents, provider integrations, and plugin catalogs are maintained independently. Plex’s matching-process documentation is older than its agent guidance, and Jellyfin’s plugin availability can change without changing the underlying identifier syntax. Treat menu labels and installation paths as version-dependent. The durable practices are to keep names and folders unambiguous, use provider IDs only in Jellyfin’s documented form, distinguish matching from metadata quality, and refresh deliberately after changing sources.
Bottom line
Fix identification before editing metadata. Organize the file in the correct library, use clear names and folders, let the scanner finish, and then apply the platform-specific correction: Plex’s Fix Match or Match tools and agent/source settings, or Jellyfin’s provider IDs and compatible providers. Use embedded tags and sidecar files only for the media formats each platform documents, and refresh existing items when a source change is meant to take effect.
