Not yet as a consumer feature. Sony has demonstrated an autonomous gameplay system for testing PlayStation 5 software, while a patent application published on February 27, 2025, proposes using machine learning to predict a future controller or other input-device actuation. Sony has not announced a product, release date, accuracy target, or final name for a system that predicts what players will do next.

What Sony has actually demonstrated

An autonomous PS5 gameplay system for quality assurance

Sony Interactive Entertainment has described an autonomous gameplay system built to test PS5 software. The system observes a game through the same kind of information available to an ordinary player on screen rather than relying on privileged internal game data. Sony’s official research post states: “We developed an autonomous gameplay system that exclusively utilizes on-screen information.”

The demonstrated approach combines image recognition, imitation learning and recorded controller-operation histories. It was tested on actual game titles, with the practical goal of automating repetitive quality-assurance work. Sony says this could reduce the cost of testing and help teams find defects earlier in development. The public material does not provide a benchmark for accuracy, a percentage reduction in testing time or a specific game-support list.

A patent proposal for predicting input

A separate Sony patent application, published February 27, 2025, describes a trained machine-learning model that senses a user’s movement and predicts a future actuation of an input device. After generating that prediction, the system can output an effect based on the predicted actuation.

The filing treats “input device” broadly. Examples include a conventional controller, a user-tracking module and an eye-tracking module. That means the proposal is not limited to guessing which button a player will press; it could use body movement, tracked user behavior or gaze-related signals, depending on the implementation.

How the proposed movement-prediction system would work

  1. Capture movement or other signals. Sensors could monitor controller motion, tracked body movement or eye activity. The patent describes these as possible input sources, not as a confirmed PS5 hardware configuration.
  2. Run a trained model. Machine-learning software analyzes the observed signal and estimates a future actuation of the user’s input device.
  3. Generate a system response. The system may output an effect based on the predicted actuation. The filing does not specify a shipping controller feature, a required response time or a guaranteed prediction rate.

In practical terms, a game or device could theoretically prepare an interaction before the player completes an action. Whether that would mean earlier haptic feedback, an accessibility response, a visual cue or another effect would depend on a final implementation; Sony has not announced which, if any, of those uses will ship.

How this fits with Sony’s other player-modeling ideas

Additional Sony filings explore related ways to model players, but they address different inputs and purposes. They should not be treated as one confirmed product roadmap.

Will a PS5 controller respond before you press a button?

The patent makes that scenario technically conceivable, but it does not establish that Sony has built or released such a controller. A patent application records a proposed method and can cover possibilities that never become products. It also does not promise that predictions will be correct often enough for a game to act on them safely.

Sony’s demonstrated PS5 work is aimed at autonomous testing, not at taking control of a player’s session. The company’s public material does not confirm a consumer system that predicts every player movement, changes controls pre-emptively or operates across all games.

Potential uses if Sony commercializes the technology

Earlier and cheaper game testing

An autonomous agent that reads only the game screen could repeat routes, actions and checks at a scale that is difficult for human testers to sustain. Earlier detection would give developers more time to reproduce and fix defects. Sony has stated these as goals, but has not published savings or defect-detection figures.

Pre-emptive interaction effects

The movement-prediction filing points toward effects triggered from an estimated future action. Such a mechanism might eventually support responsive feedback or assistive interactions, but the patent does not define a finished user experience. Any consumer design would need to handle incorrect predictions without causing unwanted inputs or feedback.

More detailed matchmaking and player models

The related AI-agent filing describes using reaction time, play style and performance in matchmaking. The player-state filing goes further by proposing a cloud model that infers a current cognitive or behavioral state from device data and gameplay history. These ideas show the breadth of Sony’s exploration; they remain patent disclosures rather than announced PlayStation functions.

What is available now?

  • Available as a public product: No Sony feature has been announced that predicts an individual player’s next movement or button press.
  • Demonstrated: Sony has publicly described autonomous gameplay research for PS5 software testing.
  • Proposed: The movement-prediction method and the player-modeling concepts are documented in patent applications.
  • Not established: There is no publication-backed accuracy figure, adoption statistic, cost-saving number, release date or final product name for the prediction concept.

For now, the accurate description is that Sony is researching ways to infer and predict player behavior. The PS5 testing system is a demonstrated research project; the idea of a controller or tracking system responding to a predicted action is a patent proposal, not a feature you can enable on a retail console.
