There is no permanent winner. A 2026 comparison of 19 popular PlayStation games found that discounted PlayStation Store copies were cheapest for 10 titles, used discs were cheapest for seven, and two were roughly tied. The Store’s normal, non-sale price was the most expensive option for 15 of the 19 games.
That makes the practical answer conditional: buy digitally when the exact edition is on sale and you can wait; buy a new or pre-owned disc when you want to play immediately, find a good local listing, or plan to resell it. Your country, console model, delivery costs and the game’s resale demand can change the result.
What the available price comparison actually found
Ars Technica’s July 2026 analysis compared 19 current top-selling PlayStation games in the United States. It checked matching digital and physical editions, including extra downloadable content and some PS4-to-PS5 upgrade costs where those changed the comparison. Physical prices came from new-disc listings, pre-owned listings and completed marketplace sales that included shipping.
That method matters because a headline price can hide a different product or a different total. A used disc with free local pickup is not equivalent to one that needs expensive delivery. A digital deluxe edition with a season pass is not equivalent to a standard disc. The comparison attempted to put like with like, but its results remain a snapshot of US listings rather than a permanent price rule.

| Option | Result in the 19-game sample | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| PlayStation Store regular price | Most expensive for 15 games | Buying digitally at launch or outside a sale was usually the costliest choice in this sample. |
| PlayStation Store sale price | Cheapest for 10 games | Digital can win when the discount is deep enough and you are willing to wait. |
| Used disc | Cheapest for seven games | Pre-owned pricing can beat even a digital sale. |
| Approximately tied | Two games | Small price differences may not justify waiting, shipping or resale effort. |
The sample is historical US pricing, not a live price list or a census of every game. It does not tell you what a particular title costs today, and its result should not be generalized to every country. It is best used as a decision pattern: regular digital pricing was often high, sale digital pricing was competitive, and used discs sometimes offered the lowest immediate or net cost.
Why the cheaper format changes from game to game
Digital has two very different prices
The Store’s standard price and its sale price should be treated as separate products in your calculation. A new release can remain at its regular price while a physical copy quickly appears in pre-owned listings. Months later, a Store promotion may undercut both forms of disc. Comparing a disc with a sale price that is no longer available produces a false result.
Record the actual sale window, region and edition. A discount that appears in one country may not appear in another, and a complete edition may be excluded even when the standard edition is discounted. If you cannot buy at the advertised price on the day you decide, it belongs in a “possible future cost,” not in today’s total.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minutePhysical prices fall through resale
A disc can move through several owners. A buyer who sells after finishing a game recovers part of the purchase price, making the disc’s net cost lower than its checkout price. The amount recovered depends on demand, condition, timing, marketplace fees and postage. There is no universal resale percentage, so use a conservative estimate based on completed local sales rather than an optimistic listing.
Resale is also time-sensitive. A popular release may retain demand shortly after launch, while a less sought-after title can fall sharply once many copies enter the market. Keep the case, disc and any transferable materials in saleable condition, and do not count a promotional code as valuable if it has already been redeemed. If you never intend to sell, enter zero resale proceeds; that prevents a theoretical recovery from making a disc look cheaper than it will be for you.
Waiting is an economic cost
In the Ars sample, the lowest Store discounts appeared only 13–33% of the time, depending on the game. A discount can therefore be cheaper in money but more expensive in time: you may wait months, miss a limited promotion or lose interest while waiting. Decide whether immediate access has value before selecting the lowest theoretical price.
Waiting can also change what you are comparing. By the time a digital sale arrives, the physical market may have moved again, a used listing may disappear, or a multiplayer community may be smaller. The financially optimal choice is not always the choice that gives you the most useful playing time.

Use a like-for-like comparison
Start with the exact product you intend to buy. A standard disc edition is not equivalent to a digital bundle that includes a season pass, bonus missions or cosmetic items. Conversely, a disc that requires a separately priced upgrade or downloadable expansion should not be compared with a complete digital edition.

- Match the game title, platform generation and edition.
- Check whether every expansion, season pass or bonus item is included.
- Confirm whether a PS4 disc receives the same PS5 upgrade as the digital version and whether an upgrade fee applies.
- Use prices from your own country and currency.
- Include shipping, tax, marketplace fees and any required hardware.
- Check whether a used copy includes the original case and whether one-time codes have already been redeemed.
- Note whether the physical listing is new, open-box, pre-owned or damaged; those are different products with different risks.
Matching content is especially important for games sold in several bundles. A lower disc price can disappear once you add a missing expansion, while a digital bundle can appear expensive only because it includes content you would otherwise buy separately.
Calculate the real cost over time
For a digital purchase, the relevant figure is the current matching Store price. If you are willing to wait, record the sale price separately and note that it is not guaranteed to return on your schedule. Unlike a disc, a Store purchase does not create a physical item you can later sell through a marketplace, so its recovery value is normally zero for this comparison.
For a disc, calculate the amount you expect to lose after the eventual sale:

digital_net_cost = matching_Store_price
disc_net_cost = disc_price + delivery + tax + required_disc_drive_cost - realistic_resale_proceeds
Use the delivered price, not just the listing headline. For resale proceeds, subtract marketplace fees, postage and a reasonable allowance for condition or price changes. If you trade locally, use completed local transactions when possible. Do not claim a precise break-even point unless you have current prices and a defensible resale estimate.
Do not add the full cost of a disc drive if you already own one. That purchase is a sunk cost for this decision. Add it only when a disc-free console owner would buy a compatible drive specifically to use discs, and verify the exact model and local price first.
A worksheet you can complete for each title
| Input | Record |
|---|---|
| Digital regular price | Current Store price for the matching edition |
| Digital sale price | Lowest available price you can actually buy now, if any |
| New disc price | Local retailer price for the same edition |
| Used disc price | Pre-owned price plus delivery and tax |
| Resale proceeds | Conservative amount after fees, postage and likely condition deductions |
| Hardware increment | Only a new, compatible disc drive bought for this purchase |
| Play-now value | Whether waiting for a sale is acceptable |
Run the worksheet twice when useful: once for buying new and selling later, and once for buying used and keeping the game. The cheaper path can change depending on how long you expect to own it and whether you value a quick local resale more than the convenience of an always-available digital copy.
Step-by-step: compare one game before buying
- Define the target edition. Write down the platform, edition and included content. Open the Store listing and the disc listings side by side.
- Record both digital prices. Note the normal price and any sale end date. A sale price is useful only if it is still available in your region and you can accept the purchase timing.
- Check new discs. Compare local retailers for the same edition. Include delivery and taxes rather than relying on the headline price.
- Check pre-owned discs. Confirm the disc, case and included codes or downloadable content. Ask whether a code has already been redeemed and read the seller’s return terms.
- Estimate resale. Look at completed sales for the same edition in similar condition. Subtract marketplace fees, postage and the value lost if you keep the disc for many months.
- Apply hardware costs. If your console has no disc drive, verify compatibility and add the incremental purchase cost. If you already have a drive, enter zero for this line.
- Choose using net cost and timing. Select the lowest realistic total, not the lowest advertised number. If the difference is small, convenience, return rights or the ability to resell may reasonably decide the purchase.
When digital is usually the better deal
You can wait for a sale
Sale pricing is the main route by which digital beat discs in the 2026 sample. Set a target price and monitor the Store rather than assuming every promotion will match the lowest historical discount. A price tracker can show regional history, but it cannot guarantee that a sale will recur when you want it.
Patient buyers should distinguish a genuine saving from a bundle comparison. If the sale version includes content you would not otherwise buy, compare its value honestly; if it includes content you do want, add the equivalent cost to the disc option. The right question is not “Which sticker price is lower?” but “Which matching package gives me the content I want at the lowest total today or at an acceptable future date?”

The physical copy has hidden costs
Delivery, tax, a marketplace fee or a required trip to a retailer can erase a small disc advantage. Include those costs before deciding that a used listing is cheaper. Condition risk has a cost too: a damaged or incomplete copy may require a return, replacement or separate purchase of missing content.
You do not expect to resell
If a disc will stay in your collection, its resale value is zero for a conservative calculation. Digital can then be cheaper whenever its current sale price is below the complete delivered disc price. This is particularly relevant when the physical premium is small and you place a high value on not storing, swapping or shipping discs.
When a disc is usually the better deal
You want to play immediately
A new release may have no meaningful digital discount. A pre-owned disc can appear quickly, and you can sell it after finishing. Paying more than a future sale price may still be rational when waiting would spoil the reason you bought the game.
You can buy and sell locally
Local transactions can reduce shipping and fees and make resale proceeds more predictable. Use the price of completed transactions, not an unsold seller’s asking price. A local buyer may also let you inspect the case and disc before paying, reducing condition uncertainty.
You value recoverable ownership
The disc itself can be sold or traded. That option lowers net cost only if there is demand and the disc remains usable and complete enough for buyers; it is not a guaranteed rebate. Keep your receipt and packaging where practical, and check whether the retailer or marketplace limits returns on opened media.
Geography, region and console hardware
Prices and sale calendars differ by country. A third-party tracker reported coverage of 67 PlayStation Store regions and 11,797 games on a page updated October 13, 2026. That describes the tracker’s scope, not an official Sony statistic and not permission to purchase from every region. Check the Store account region, local currency, tax rules and retailer availability that apply to you.
The Ars comparison used US retailers and marketplaces, so its 15-of-19, 10-of-19 and seven-of-19 results should be treated as historical context. Exchange rates, local promotions, import costs and the strength of a country’s used-game market can reverse the ranking. A reader in another market should repeat the worksheet with local listings rather than converting the US prices mechanically.

Refunds and return policies can change the risk
US PlayStation Store purchases
Sony’s US support guidance generally allows a refund request for a full game or downloadable content within 14 days, provided the content has not been downloaded or streamed, unless it is faulty. Downloading or streaming normally removes that eligibility. Rules can differ outside the United States.
Physical purchases from PlayStation Direct
PlayStation Direct’s US physical-goods policy is separate from the Store policy. Under that policy, opened or unsealed physical disc games are generally not refundable unless they are faulty, covered by a warranty claim or a legal right applies. A purchase from another retailer follows that retailer’s terms, and local consumer law may provide additional rights.
Check the policy before opening the package or starting a download. Do not assume that every digital or physical game is returnable. A retailer’s pre-owned guarantee, a marketplace dispute window and PlayStation Direct’s policy can all differ, so record where you bought the copy when comparing risk.

What Sony’s 2028 announcement means for future prices
In a July 1, 2026 PlayStation Blog announcement, Sony Senior Director Sid Shuman wrote: physical game disc production for all new games releasing on PlayStation consoles will be discontinued starting January 2028.
Sony said games already released, and games releasing in disc format before January 2028, are unaffected. It also said new games after that change will be offered digitally through the PlayStation Store and through retailer channels.
Sony additionally said it would continue offering choices about where players purchase new games. The announcement is a stated plan, not proof that digital prices will rise, fall or follow a particular discount schedule. Existing discs and the pre-owned market remain relevant for earlier releases, while the supply of discs for new releases may change after the planned date.
Do not turn the announcement into a price forecast. It does not establish a future standard price, a sale frequency or the value of existing discs. It does mean that availability should be part of a long-term decision: a disc may remain an option for games released before the planned change, while a new post-January 2028 release is expected to be offered digitally through Store and retailer channels.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Common mistakes that produce the wrong answer
- Comparing different editions: extra downloadable content can be worth more than the apparent price difference.
- Using an expired sale: record the date and availability of every sale price.
- Ignoring delivery and condition: a cheap listing with high postage or a damaged disc is not a cheap purchase.
- Assuming resale value: estimate proceeds from completed sales and subtract fees.
- Counting a sunk hardware cost twice: include a disc drive only when this purchase causes you to buy it.
- Generalizing from US prices: local taxes, currencies, retailers and sale timing can reverse the result.
- Treating the 19-game study as universal: it is a sample of popular games, not every PlayStation title.
- Confusing retailer and platform policies: Store refunds, PlayStation Direct returns and independent retailer rules are separate.
- Using an asking price as resale evidence: an unsold listing does not show what buyers actually paid.
- Forgetting upgrade costs: a PS4 disc and a PS5 digital edition may not provide the same upgrade path without an added fee.
A practical decision rule
| Your situation | Usually the rational starting point | Check before paying |
|---|---|---|
| You want the game today and may sell it later | New or used disc | Delivered price, condition and realistic resale proceeds |
| You can wait for a promotion | PlayStation Store sale | Sale end date and whether the edition matches |
| You never resell and have a disc drive | Whichever current price is lower | Included content and total delivered cost |
| You own a disc-free console | Compare digital with disc plus compatible drive | Exact model support and local drive price |
| The prices are nearly equal | Choose the format with the return or resale option you value | Applicable policy and marketplace fees |
The most reliable habit is to run the worksheet for the specific game on the day you buy. Over time, discounted digital is often the cheapest cash price for patient shoppers, while used discs can deliver the lowest net cost for immediate players who resell. Neither pattern guarantees the result for your next title.

Are PlayStation games cheaper digitally or on disc?
Neither format wins every time. In Ars Technica’s 2026 US sample of 19 games, Store sale prices were lowest for 10, used discs for seven, and two were roughly tied. The Store’s regular price was most expensive for 15.

Is it cheaper to buy used PS5 games?
Often, but not automatically. Used discs were the lowest-priced option for seven of the 19 sampled games. Compare the same edition, delivery, taxes, condition, return terms and any resale proceeds.
Should I wait for a PlayStation Store sale?
Wait if you can accept delayed access and the expected saving matters. The lowest discounts in the sample appeared only 13–33% of the time depending on the game, so a future sale is not guaranteed on your schedule.
How do I include resale in the calculation?
Subtract a conservative estimate of eventual proceeds from the disc’s delivered cost. Base it on completed sales for the same edition and condition, then subtract fees and postage. Use zero if you do not plan to sell.

For this comparison, treat a Store purchase as having no resale proceeds because it does not create a physical item you can sell through a marketplace.
Does a disc-free PS5 change which option is cheaper?
Yes. Add the full incremental cost of a compatible disc drive when you buy one specifically for this decision. Verify model support and local pricing; do not add the cost again if you already own the drive.
Can I return a PlayStation game after buying it?
US Store guidance generally requires a refund request within 14 days and no download or streaming, unless the content is faulty. PlayStation Direct’s US policy generally excludes opened or unsealed physical disc games unless faulty or otherwise legally covered. Other retailers and countries can differ.
Will physical PlayStation games disappear in 2028?
Sony announced that physical disc production for new PlayStation-console games is planned to end starting January 2028. Games already released and games releasing in disc format before then are stated to be unaffected; the announcement does not set future prices.
The Bottom Line
Compare the exact game, edition and total cost on the day you buy. A Store sale is often the cheapest cash price for a patient buyer, while a used disc can be cheaper for someone who wants to play now and resell later. Include delivery, taxes, upgrade or DLC costs, realistic resale proceeds and any disc-drive purchase. The 2026 US sample shows why there is no universal winner: regular digital pricing was usually highest, but sale digital and used physical copies each led for different games.
