The choice is primarily about form factor: PULSE Explore is a pair of wireless earbuds, while PULSE 3D is an over-ear wireless headset. Choose Explore if you want compact earbuds, a charging case, PlayStation Link plus Bluetooth at the same time, and easy portability. Choose PULSE 3D if you prefer padded over-ear headphones, want its physical game/chat and EQ controls, need a 3.5 mm cable option, or value Sony’s listed wireless-play figure of up to 12 hours at mid volume.
Neither is a universal winner. Sony’s specifications document features and manufacturer battery claims, but they do not establish which model sounds better, feels more comfortable, or delivers clearer microphone audio for every player. Both can reproduce PS5 3D Audio when the game supports that feature.
The decision in brief
- Pick PULSE Explore for an earbud design, a portable charging case, PlayStation Link wireless on PS5, Bluetooth for a phone, and simultaneous connection to a compatible Link device and Bluetooth device.
- Pick PULSE 3D for an over-ear fit, an included wireless adapter for PS5, PS4 and compatible Windows or macOS computers, listed EQ and game/chat controls, a 3.5 mm audio connection, and Sony’s up-to-12-hour wireless-play specification.
- Do not choose based on 3D Audio alone. The console and game determine whether 3D Audio is available; a headset cannot add support to a game that does not include it.

Explore’s battery total includes energy stored in the case, whereas PULSE 3D’s headline figure describes one wireless-play run under a stated volume condition. Those figures are not a laboratory head-to-head test.

Form factor: earbuds versus over-ear headphones
Why the Explore shape matters
Explore places the drivers in your ears and stores in a dedicated case when you are not playing. That makes it the natural choice if you move between rooms, travel with a handheld device, or dislike a headband resting over your hair. The case also gives you a predictable place to charge and store both earbuds.
An earbud fit is personal. Ear shape, tip size, seal and how firmly you want the buds seated can change perceived bass, isolation and long-session comfort. Sony’s product information establishes the design, but it does not prove that Explore is more comfortable than PULSE 3D for a particular listener.
Why the PULSE 3D shape matters
PULSE 3D surrounds the ears with plush earpads and uses a headband strap. That is preferable when you want a conventional headset resting on your head instead of anything inserted into the ear. The over-ear structure can also be easier to put on and remove during a gaming session.

Wireless setup and device connections
PULSE Explore on PS5
Explore uses PlayStation Link through the included USB adapter. PlayStation describes Link as a technology providing a lossless wireless connection on its PlayStation Link support page. Insert the adapter into the PS5, pair the earbuds according to the on-screen or supplied instructions, and select the Link audio output in the console’s sound settings if it is not selected automatically.
Explore also supports Bluetooth. PlayStation says you can connect a PS5 through the USB adapter and a mobile phone through Bluetooth at the same time. This simultaneous Link-plus-Bluetooth behavior is limited to certain PlayStation Link audio devices; do not assume every Link product supports it. When supported, game audio can remain on the PS5 while a phone call or another Bluetooth audio source is connected.
PULSE 3D on PS5, PS4 and computers
PULSE 3D uses its included wireless adapter. PlayStation lists compatibility with PS5, PS4 and compatible Windows and macOS computers on the product page. Plug the adapter into the target device, turn on the headset, and select the wireless headset as the output and microphone in the operating system or console controls.

The adapter-based arrangement is straightforward, but it is different from Explore’s earbud-and-case workflow. PULSE 3D’s product information does not list simultaneous Bluetooth operation, so do not buy it expecting Explore’s Link-and-phone behavior.

Expansion with additional Link adapters
Explore already includes a PlayStation Link USB adapter. Sony says additional adapters can be purchased for expanding compatible-device connectivity. An extra adapter is an expansion option, not a requirement for normal PS5 use.
Controls, sound settings and chat features
Explore controls
Explore provides easy-access volume buttons on the earbuds. Sony also describes customizable PS5 sound settings through the PlayStation Link system. The published information identifies these controls and settings but does not establish how they compare with PULSE 3D’s presets in sound quality or convenience.
PULSE 3D controls
PULSE 3D lists a broader set of headset controls: PS5 EQ presets, master volume, microphone mute, game/chat balance and microphone monitoring. Game/chat balance is useful when you need to shift emphasis between teammates and game audio without opening a menu. Microphone monitoring lets you hear some of your own voice, which can help prevent shouting, although the product page does not quantify its performance.

Explore has two hidden integrated microphones, and Sony describes microphone noise rejection. PULSE 3D has dual built-in noise-cancelling microphones. These are design descriptions, not evidence that one microphone is clearer in real party chat. Room echo, microphone position, network compression and the people listening to you all affect the result.

Battery and charging: read the numbers correctly
PULSE Explore’s two-part claim
PlayStation lists up to five hours per earbud charge and up to 10 additional hours from the included charging case on its US product page. The first number describes a single earbud charge; the second describes extra energy available from the case. It is a manufacturer claim, not an independently measured runtime, and actual life changes with volume, microphone use, wireless conditions and other settings.
PULSE 3D’s single-session claim
Sony’s PULSE 3D product page lists up to 12 hours of wireless play. The instruction manual published in 2020 qualifies the up-to-12-hour figure at mid volume. It is therefore not directly equivalent to Explore’s five-hour per-charge figure or its case-assisted total.
If you play in long uninterrupted sessions and do not want to return earbuds to a case, PULSE 3D’s stated single-session figure may fit your routine. If you prefer short sessions with automatic top-ups between them, Explore’s case may be more convenient. Neither statement predicts your real-world runtime.

Charging habits
- Keep Explore in its case between sessions so the earbuds begin charging as soon as they are stored.
- Charge the case before travel; the case’s additional hours are only useful if the case itself has stored energy.
- Charge PULSE 3D before a long session and remember that the 12-hour figure is an upper specification at mid volume, not a guarantee.
Audio and PS5 3D Audio
Sony says the PULSE 3D wireless headset was specifically tuned to deliver the 3D Audio made possible by PS5. Explore’s product page also lists support for PS5 3D Audio in compatible games. In both cases, compatibility belongs to the game: if a title does not implement PS5 3D Audio, neither headset can create that game feature.

Spatial presentation also depends on the game’s mix, console settings and your fit. A well-sealed earbud and a comfortable over-ear headset can present the same supported signal differently to different listeners, but the official specifications do not establish a universal sound-quality winner. Avoid treating Sony’s tuning statement as an independent comparison test.
For the same reason, there is no evidence here to rank bass, detail, imaging or loudness between the two products. Choose the physical design and connection features first, then use the return or exchange policy available in your region if fit proves unsuitable.

Choose Explore for portability and a phone connection
- You want earbuds rather than a headband.
- You carry your audio between rooms or outside the gaming setup.
- You want a charging case and are comfortable with case-based charging.
- You need a compatible PlayStation Link device and Bluetooth phone connected simultaneously.
- You prefer volume controls directly on the earbuds.
Choose PULSE 3D for a traditional headset and physical mixing
- You prefer plush over-ear earpads and a headband strap.
- You want the listed PS5 EQ presets, game/chat balance, mic mute and microphone monitoring controls.
- You need a 3.5 mm audio connection for a wired fallback.
- You want one included adapter that Sony lists for PS5, PS4 and compatible Windows/macOS computers.
- Your priority is Sony’s stated up-to-12-hour wireless-play figure at mid volume.
When neither specification settles it
If both designs meet your connection requirements, comfort becomes the deciding variable. Earbuds can be less noticeable for some people and unacceptable for others; over-ear pads can feel secure to one player and warm or bulky to another. Because the documented sources do not provide controlled comfort, microphone or sound measurements, there is no responsible way to declare a winner for those traits.

Set up PULSE Explore with a PS5
- Charge the earbuds and case before the first long session.
- Plug the included PlayStation Link USB adapter into the PS5.
- Power on the earbuds and complete pairing using the console prompts or the supplied setup instructions.
- Open the PS5 sound settings and confirm the Link device is selected for output and microphone.
- Adjust earbud volume with the built-in buttons and configure available PlayStation Link sound settings.
- If you want phone audio as well, pair the earbuds with the phone over Bluetooth and verify that your specific Link device supports simultaneous connections.
Set up PULSE 3D
- Charge the headset before use.
- Connect the included wireless adapter to the PS5, PS4 or compatible Windows/macOS computer.
- Turn on the headset and pair it with the adapter.
- Select the wireless headset for output and microphone in the device’s audio settings.
- Use the headset controls for master volume, microphone mute, game/chat balance and monitoring; select a PS5 EQ preset when using a PS5.
- For a wired connection, connect the supplied 3.5 mm cable to a compatible audio jack and select the wired output if the device requires it.
Troubleshooting connection and audio problems
No sound after plugging in the adapter
- Confirm the USB adapter is fully inserted and the headset or earbuds are powered on.
- Check the PS5 or computer output device; the system may still be sending audio to the television, controller or built-in speakers.
- Disconnect and reconnect the adapter, then repeat pairing if the device is not shown.
Bluetooth phone audio does not work with Explore
- Pair the earbuds in the phone’s Bluetooth menu, not only in the PS5 menu.
- Confirm that the PlayStation Link product in use supports simultaneous Link and Bluetooth; Sony limits this feature to certain devices.
- Check the phone’s selected media and call output and lower either source if notifications or calls interrupt play.
Friends cannot hear you
- Check that microphone mute is not enabled on PULSE 3D or in PS5 party settings.
- On Explore, verify that the Link device is selected as the input and that the earbuds’ microphones are unobstructed.
- Test the microphone in a console audio menu or a private party before changing game settings.
3D Audio seems absent
- Verify that the game supports PS5 3D Audio; support is title-specific.
- Check the PS5’s 3D Audio setting and the game’s own audio menu.
- Do not infer a hardware fault solely because a non-compatible game sounds like ordinary stereo.
September 2026 product announcement
On September 15, 2026, PlayStation announced additional Pulse audio products in a PlayStation Blog post. That announcement said more details, including pricing and launch timing, would come later. It is useful context if you are deciding whether to buy now or wait, but it does not establish availability, price or specifications for those announced products.
Final decision
Buy PULSE Explore when the advantages you will notice every day are earbuds, a charging case, portability and compatible Link-plus-Bluetooth operation. Buy PULSE 3D when you want a conventional over-ear headset, a 3.5 mm fallback, the listed physical mixing and EQ controls, broad adapter compatibility, or Sony’s up-to-12-hour-at-mid-volume specification. Both are legitimate PS5 3D Audio options in games that support the feature; your preferred fit and connection pattern should decide between them.
