PlayStation Plus Premium is built around PlayStation’s Game Catalog, Classics Catalog, game trials and cloud streaming. Xbox Game Pass Ultimate combines a changing library across Xbox and PC with day-one games, cloud gaming and bundled benefits including EA Play, Fortnite Crew and Ubisoft+ Classics. Both include online multiplayer benefits, but the better fit depends on your hardware, the games you want and which extras you will actually use.
This comparison reflects the services described on their US product pages as of October 13, 2026. Catalogs, prices, benefits and regional availability can change, so check the current listing for a game and the checkout page for your region before subscribing.
At a glance: how the plans differ
| Feature | PlayStation Plus Premium | Xbox Game Pass Ultimate |
|---|---|---|
| Game library | Game Catalog and Classics Catalog; Sony describes the Game Catalog as hundreds of games. | Xbox describes a library of 500+ games across Xbox console, PC and supported devices. This is Xbox’s current company-reported count, not an independent audit. |
| New releases | Catalog games and limited-time trials are included, but the listed benefits do not establish a general promise that new releases arrive on day one. | Xbox lists day-one games, subject to exceptions in the plan terms; this does not mean every release is included. |
| Older games and trials | Includes a Classics Catalog and game trials. PS3 Classics are streaming-only. | The plan page emphasizes the changing library and day-one games, rather than a comparable PlayStation Classics Catalog or trial benefit. |
| Platforms and streaming | Streaming is available on PS4 and PS5 consoles and PC. Selected games can stream to PS5 and PlayStation Portal. | Ultimate covers Xbox console, PC and supported devices; cloud play depends on supported devices, regions and plan conditions. |
| Online multiplayer | Online multiplayer is included in all PlayStation Plus tiers for modes that require membership. | Ultimate includes online console multiplayer. Xbox says free-to-play multiplayer is open to every Xbox player. |
| Additional listed benefits | Ubisoft+ Classics, Sony Pictures Catalog, Share Play, cloud storage, discounts and exclusive content. | EA Play, Fortnite Crew, Ubisoft+ Classics, in-game benefits, rewards and discounts. |
| US price shown on the official plan page | $19.99 monthly, $54.99 every three months, or $159.99 every 12 months, as displayed on Sony’s US page on October 13, 2026. Regional prices and offers may differ. | Not stated on the Xbox US product page reviewed for this comparison. Check the current official checkout price rather than relying on an older announcement or third-party listing. |
Neither service gives permanent ownership of its subscription catalog. A game can leave, and access depends on the game’s terms and your active membership. Treat the library count as a snapshot, not a promise that a specific title will remain available.

The headline numbers are not a direct measure of value. Sony describes hundreds of games in its Game Catalog, while Xbox’s current product page advertises 500+ games across several platforms. The services do not publish matching, independently audited counts, and a larger catalog is not necessarily more useful if it lacks the games you want or the version that works on your device.

What PlayStation Plus Premium includes
Premium includes the benefits Sony lists for the lower PlayStation Plus tiers, then adds the Game Catalog, Classics Catalog, game trials, cloud streaming, Ubisoft+ Classics and the Sony Pictures Catalog. The lower-tier benefits listed on Sony’s membership page include monthly games, online multiplayer, exclusive discounts, exclusive content, cloud storage and Share Play.
Game Catalog
The Game Catalog is the broad library of games available to Premium members to download or stream, subject to the game and device. Sony describes it as containing hundreds of games. The catalog changes: some titles can have end dates, and a title shown today should not be assumed to remain indefinitely. Look up the specific games you plan to play before choosing a membership term.
Monthly games and catalog games are distinct benefits. Sony’s terms require an active membership for monthly games, while catalog titles are available only while they remain included and your membership is active. If you are choosing Premium primarily for one title, check both that it is currently listed and whether its page shows an end date. A broad catalog description cannot confirm the status of an individual game.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Classics Catalog and game trials
The Classics Catalog is the clearest Premium distinction for people interested in older PlayStation generations. Premium also includes trials of selected games, which let members try supported titles for a limited time. The trial benefit is not a promise that every new or popular game has a trial; check the individual game listing for eligibility and terms.
There is an important format limit for older games: PS3 Classics are streaming-only. Other included titles may be downloadable or streamable depending on the game. If a particular classic matters to you, check its listing and streaming availability rather than assuming all Classics work the same way.
Trials are useful when you are deciding whether a specific supported game suits you, but they are not the same as access to the full catalog or a subscription promotion. The relevant title page should say whether a trial is offered and what limits apply. If you already know you want to keep playing a game after a trial, check its purchase option and terms rather than assuming the trial itself includes ongoing access.
Cloud streaming and supported devices
Sony lists cloud streaming on PS4 and PS5 consoles and PC, with selected games also streamable to PS5 and PlayStation Portal. It states a minimum internet connection of 5 Mbps and 15 Mbps for 1080p streaming. Those are Sony’s stated connection requirements, not a guarantee of smooth play: actual performance can also depend on network stability, device support and the title. Sony notes that some games cannot be streamed.
Streaming is an alternative to downloading only where the game and device support it. That distinction matters if you are choosing a plan for a particular game or a device away from your console: confirm both that the title is included and that it can stream on the device you intend to use. Sony’s stated speed thresholds are useful minimums, but they do not remove the need for a stable connection.

Sony says that starting in January 2026, PS4 games will be added to PlayStation Plus only intermittently. That qualification concerns future additions, not a claim that existing PS4 catalog games have all been removed. Check the current catalog for the titles and platforms that matter to you.
Other Premium benefits
The listed extras include Ubisoft+ Classics and the Sony Pictures Catalog, as well as Share Play, cloud storage, discounts and exclusive content. Their inclusion does not make every associated game, film or offer available in every region or forever. Check the applicable account, catalog and benefit terms to confirm what is available to you.
These extras are best treated as bonuses rather than assumed cash savings. Their practical value depends on whether the available titles, films, discounts or sharing features fit how you play. A benefit’s name alone does not establish its current selection, availability in your region or terms of use.
What Xbox Game Pass Ultimate includes
Xbox describes Ultimate as a changing library of 500+ games across Xbox console, PC and supported devices, with new games on day one. The same product page lists streaming, EA Play, Fortnite Crew, Ubisoft+ Classics, in-game benefits and online console multiplayer. The Xbox library count is a company-reported figure on the current product page, not an independently verified tally.
Console, PC and day-one access
Ultimate is the more direct option for someone who wants one subscription spanning Xbox console and PC. Xbox lists new games on day one, but plan terms include exceptions. It is not a guarantee that every new release, every edition or every add-on is included. Check the game’s listing for supported platforms and the exact access included.
Day-one access is a stated plan benefit, but it should not be read as a blanket promise covering every game released on a given date. The service page and plan comparison terms note exceptions, and inclusion can also vary by platform. Before subscribing for a particular launch, confirm that the exact game and version are listed for your device and region.
As with PlayStation’s library, Xbox’s catalog changes. Xbox says availability varies over time, region, plan and platform. Access to a subscription game ends if your membership expires or if the game leaves the library, so a catalog listing is access while eligible, not a purchase of the game.
Bundled benefits
Xbox lists EA Play, Fortnite Crew, Ubisoft+ Classics, in-game benefits, rewards and discounts with Ultimate. These are meaningful if you use the included services or games, but do not assume every partner benefit is identical across regions or remains unchanged. Check the current plan terms and the benefit’s own availability before counting it toward the subscription’s value.

- 🚀 Storage: Custom 825GB SSD
- 🚀 RAM: 16GB GDDR6
- 🚀 GPU: 10.3 teraflop RDNA 2 GPU
The same caution applies when comparing bundles: two services can list a partner benefit without offering the same selection or access conditions. Confirm what the benefit currently includes and whether it works on the platform you use. If you do not use a bundled service, it should not weigh as heavily in your personal comparison as a game you plan to play.
Online multiplayer
Ultimate includes online console multiplayer. Xbox separately says free-to-play games can be played online by every Xbox player, so a subscription is not required for that category of multiplayer. For a paid game, check its own platform and membership requirements; the answer may differ by game and mode.
Cloud gaming: current access and the announced November change
Cloud play can help when you want to stream instead of installing or playing directly on a console, but availability depends on the service, game, device and region. Sony’s listed connection requirements are given above. Xbox says cloud gaming requires a Game Pass subscription and a supported device; cloud-playable games outside Game Pass are sold separately. A supported controller may also be required for the device and game, and Xbox says a controller is sold separately.
If you are considering cloud gaming on a phone, tablet or other supported device, check compatibility for both the device and the individual game. The existence of cloud play as a plan benefit does not mean every title can be streamed everywhere. For Xbox, the supported controller is a separate purchase where one is needed; do not assume the subscription includes the hardware.
On September 3, 2026, Team Xbox announced a coming change to monthly cloud gaming allowances. The announcement says the allowances begin in November 2026, so they are not yet an active cap as of October 13, 2026.
| Plan in the announcement | Announced cloud gaming allowance | Timing and status |
|---|---|---|
| Game Pass Ultimate | 15 hours per month | Announced to begin in November 2026; not active as of October 13, 2026. |
| Game Pass Premium | 10 hours per month | Announced to begin in November 2026; not active as of October 13, 2026. |
| Game Pass Essential | 5 hours per month | Announced to begin in November 2026; not active as of October 13, 2026. |
Team Xbox said additional playtime could be purchased, but pricing, availability and further details were still to be shared before the change takes effect. Do not treat the announced allowance as a current restriction or assume what additional hours will cost. Recheck Xbox’s official terms close to the date you intend to play.
The announcement applies to the three Game Pass plans named in its allowance table; it does not establish that those hours are already being counted in October. If cloud streaming is a major part of your decision, note the November start date and verify the final terms when they are published. The allowance is time for cloud gaming, not a statement about how many games are included in the library.

How to choose based on your games and devices
Choose Premium if PlayStation-specific features are your priority
- You mainly play on PS4 or PS5 and want the service designed around that library.
- You care about older PlayStation games in the Classics Catalog, including understanding that PS3 Classics stream rather than download.
- You want trials of selected games as a way to try them before deciding whether to buy.
- You expect to use PlayStation cloud streaming on a supported console, PC or selected Portal titles.
Choose Ultimate if you will use Xbox and PC access
- You play on Xbox and Windows PC and value access across those platforms in one plan.
- You want the day-one games benefit, while recognizing exceptions and checking each game’s listing.
- You will use included partner benefits such as EA Play, Fortnite Crew or Ubisoft+ Classics.
- You rely on cloud gaming and want to account for the announced monthly-hours policy once it begins in November 2026.
Make the catalog check before paying
- Write down the games you actually plan to play, including the platform you will play each one on.
- Check each service’s current catalog and verify that the exact game is included for your region and device. Do not rely on a remembered catalog count or an old list.
- Look for any end date, platform limitation, streaming-only condition or trial-time limit shown on the game’s listing.
- Compare benefits you will use, not just benefits named in the plan. A bundled service has little practical value if you do not use it.
- Check the current price at the official regional checkout. Sony’s US Premium prices listed here do not apply automatically elsewhere, and a current standard Xbox US price was not stated on the product page reviewed.
- Confirm cloud compatibility for your device, game and region, and consider the connection or controller requirements before using streaming as your main way to play.
One useful way to apply that checklist is to start with the games rather than the subscriptions. If a title is not in the plan you are considering, a high catalog count or attractive bundle will not solve that gap. If your shortlist spans both console and PC, make sure each game is available on the platform you intend to use; service-wide platform language does not guarantee that every title runs everywhere.

Prices and subscription terms to consider
Sony’s US membership page displayed Premium at $19.99 for one month, $54.99 for three months and $159.99 for 12 months on October 13, 2026. Sony says the subscription continues until canceled. These are the listed US prices at that time, not a worldwide price guarantee; your account, region or offer may differ.
A like-for-like price verdict is not possible from the current figures available here because the Xbox US product page did not state a standard Ultimate price. Check the amount and renewal period shown on the official checkout before subscribing. Do not compare Sony’s listed price with an old Xbox price, a temporary promotion or an amount from another region as though both were current standard prices.
The monthly, three-month and annual Sony options also make the intended length of use relevant. The displayed annual amount is lower than paying the displayed monthly rate for twelve separate months, but that comparison only helps if you expect to keep the membership for the year and the listed prices remain applicable to your account. Compare the checkout total and renewal terms for the term you would actually choose.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What both subscriptions do—and do not—mean
Both plans pair a changing game library with online multiplayer benefits, but the exact multiplayer requirement depends on the platform and game. PlayStation includes online multiplayer in every PS Plus tier for modes that require membership. Ultimate includes Xbox online console multiplayer, while Xbox says free-to-play multiplayer is available to all Xbox players.
Neither membership turns its catalog into a permanent collection. On PlayStation, catalog titles may have end dates, and Sony requires an active membership for monthly games. On Xbox, access ends when the membership expires or a game leaves the library. If you want to keep a game regardless of future catalog changes, check whether it is available to buy separately and whether your save or add-on access has separate conditions.
Finally, streaming support is not universal. A game can be in a catalog without being streamable on every device, and cloud play may have region, device, network or plan restrictions. Confirm those details for the particular game instead of treating a service-wide streaming benefit as a promise about every title.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which subscription includes more games?
Xbox advertises 500+ games across Xbox console, PC and supported devices. Sony describes hundreds in the Game Catalog, alongside its Classics Catalog. Those are different company-reported descriptions rather than directly comparable audited counts. Check whether the games you want are currently included on your platform.
Does PlayStation Plus Premium include new games on release day?
Sony’s listed Premium benefits do not establish a general promise that new releases arrive on day one. Premium includes catalog access and trials for selected games; check the current listing for a specific title.
Does Xbox Game Pass Ultimate include every new game on day one?
Xbox lists day-one games as a benefit, but its plan terms include exceptions. It does not mean every release, edition or add-on is included. Verify the game’s listing, platform and region.
Can I download PS3 Classics with PlayStation Plus Premium?
No. Sony states that PS3 Classics in the Classics Catalog are streaming-only. Other titles may be downloadable or streamable depending on the game, so check the individual listing.
Do I need a subscription to play free-to-play games online on Xbox?
Xbox says free-to-play multiplayer is open to every Xbox player, so Ultimate is not required for that category. Paid games and particular modes can have different requirements.
Are the Xbox cloud gaming hour limits active now?
No. Team Xbox announced on September 3, 2026 that monthly allowances of 15 hours for Ultimate, 10 for Premium and 5 for Essential would begin in November 2026. Additional playtime was also announced, but its pricing and availability details were still pending as of October 13, 2026.
What does PlayStation Plus Premium cost in the US?
Sony’s US page listed $19.99 monthly, $54.99 for three months and $159.99 for 12 months on October 13, 2026. Prices and offers can vary by region and account; confirm the amount and renewal terms at checkout. The Xbox US product page reviewed did not state a standard Ultimate price.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Do games from either subscription stay in my library forever?
No. Catalog access depends on an active membership and on a game remaining in the service. Sony says catalog titles may have end dates and requires active membership for monthly games; Xbox says access ends if membership expires or a game leaves its library.
The Bottom Line
Choose PlayStation Plus Premium if its Classics Catalog, selected game trials or PlayStation streaming are the benefits you will use. Choose Xbox Game Pass Ultimate if you want access across Xbox and PC, value its day-one games benefit and will use its bundled extras. Neither is a universal winner: check your must-play games, device compatibility, regional terms and live checkout price before committing. If cloud gaming is central to your decision, remember that Xbox’s announced monthly-hour allowances are scheduled to start in November 2026, not active as of October 13.
