PlayStation Plus Premium is the only PlayStation Plus tier that includes the Classics Catalog. Extra includes the Game Catalog and Ubisoft+ Classics but not the Classics Catalog, while Essential includes the core online-service benefits and monthly games but neither catalog. Premium also adds game trials and cloud streaming.
This answer applies to Sony’s plan comparison for the United States checked on October 18, 2026. Prices, catalog titles, streaming eligibility and availability can differ by country and can change over time.
The tier you need for Classics Catalog games
Sony’s comparison marks the Classics Catalog as included with Premium and not included with Extra or Essential. If access to the Classics Catalog is the reason you are considering a subscription, Premium is the required tier.

That requirement is separate from access to the Game Catalog. Extra gives members the Game Catalog, but upgrading from Essential to Extra does not unlock the Classics Catalog. Only the Premium tier combines the Game Catalog with the Classics Catalog, game trials and cloud streaming.

Sony’s Premium description also lists the Game Catalog, Ubisoft+ Classics, Monthly Games, Online Multiplayer, Exclusive Discounts, Share Play, Cloud Storage, Exclusive Content and the Sony Pictures Catalog. The key distinction for a retro-game shopper is that the Classics Catalog appears only in Premium’s feature set.
What “Classics Catalog included” actually gives you
Access to a changing library
Premium members can select games from the Classics Catalog and, where Sony offers the option, either download them or stream them. A subscription grants access while the title remains available under the service’s rules; it is not the same as buying a permanent digital license for every catalog game.

Check the game’s current listing before starting a long playthrough, especially for a game you intend to stream rather than purchase.
Streaming-only classic titles
Sony says that a wide selection of classic PS3 games is available by streaming only. Those games cannot be downloaded to your console through the catalog. A suitable internet connection and a supported streaming location are therefore part of the practical requirement for some Classics Catalog entries.

PS1 and PS2 questions
Readers often ask whether they need Premium for PS1 or PS2 classics. The tier answer is yes when the game is offered through the Classics Catalog: Premium is the tier Sony identifies for that catalog. The exact games, editions and capabilities are not universal, however. Catalog contents and features can vary by region and can change as Sony adds or removes titles, so verify an individual game’s listing rather than assuming every classic release is available everywhere.
Which plan should you choose?
Choose Premium if classics are your priority
Premium is the straightforward choice if you specifically want the Classics Catalog. It is also the only tier in this comparison that adds game trials and cloud streaming. Those extra features can matter if you like sampling a game before buying it or want to play supported titles without downloading them.
Choose Extra if you want newer catalog games, not classics
Extra includes everything in Essential plus the Game Catalog and Ubisoft+ Classics. It does not include the Classics Catalog, trials or cloud streaming. If your goal is access to the modern Game Catalog and you do not need retro titles, Extra avoids paying for Premium’s additional features.
Choose Essential for the core service
Essential provides monthly games, online multiplayer, discounts, cloud storage and Share Play. It does not include either the Game Catalog or the Classics Catalog. This tier fits someone who mainly needs online play and the recurring monthly-game benefit, rather than a large on-demand library.
Consider streaming before paying for Premium
If you are choosing Premium mainly for a streaming-only PS3 game, confirm that cloud streaming is supported in your country and that your connection can meet Sony’s stated thresholds. Premium does not turn every catalog title into a downloadable game.

Cloud-streaming requirements for Premium
Sony’s plan page lists 5 Mbps as the minimum connection speed for cloud streaming and 15 Mbps for 1080p streaming. These are minimum service requirements, not a guarantee of perfect performance. Other people or devices using the same connection, wireless interference and network congestion can affect the result.

- Expect a streaming-only title to require an active internet connection for the entire session.
- Check whether the specific game and your region are eligible for streaming before assuming the Premium feature applies.
- If a downloadable version is offered, downloading avoids the bandwidth and latency demands of streaming but uses console storage.
The 15 Mbps figure is specifically Sony’s stated threshold for 1080p. It should not be read as a promise that every session will run at that resolution, because resolution and availability can depend on the title, region and service conditions.
Premium pricing in the United States
On Sony’s US plan page checked October 18, 2026, Premium is listed at:
- $19.99 per month
- $54.99 every three months
- $159.99 every 12 months
These figures describe the US listing at that check date. They are not global prices, and Sony can change subscription prices or promotional terms. The available billing intervals and prices for Essential and Extra were not stated in the comparison information used here, so do not infer them from Premium’s figures. Review the subscription screen for your account’s country before completing payment.
Regional availability and catalog changes
PlayStation Plus is not one identical library worldwide. Sony can vary catalog contents, streaming eligibility, supported features and pricing by region. A game shown in one country may be absent in another, and a streaming option may not be offered in every market.

Catalog membership is also time-sensitive. Sony may publish an end date when a game is scheduled to leave. When a title has a removal date, plan your play time accordingly; changing from Extra to Premium will not restore a game that has already left the service.
Before subscribing for one particular game, check three details in your local PlayStation listing:
- That the title is currently marked as part of the Classics Catalog rather than the separately named Game Catalog.
- Whether the title can be downloaded, streamed, or both.
- Whether Sony shows a removal date or any regional restriction.
How to use the Classics Catalog after subscribing
Once the Premium subscription is active, use the PlayStation Plus area on your console or the PlayStation Store and look for the Classics Catalog label. The exact menu arrangement can differ between console software versions and regions, but the catalog name and Premium entitlement are the important checks.
- Sign in with the account that holds the Premium subscription.
- Open the PlayStation Plus section and select the Classics Catalog category.
- Open a game’s details page and confirm its current availability in your region.
- Choose the download option when Sony offers one, or choose streaming for a stream-enabled title.
- Read any displayed end date before committing to a game that may take a long time to finish.
If the Classics Catalog category is missing, first verify that the account is subscribed to Premium rather than Extra or Essential. If the account is Premium but a particular title is absent, the likely explanations are regional availability, a catalog change or a streaming-eligibility limitation; the tier alone does not guarantee every classic game.

Common misunderstandings
“Extra is almost Premium, so it should include classics.”
It does not. Extra adds the Game Catalog and Ubisoft+ Classics, but Sony’s comparison explicitly marks the Classics Catalog as not included with Extra.

“Essential’s monthly games are the Classics Catalog.”
They are separate benefits. Essential includes monthly games, but Sony marks both the Game Catalog and Classics Catalog as unavailable in that tier.
“Premium means I own the games permanently.”
Catalog access is a subscription benefit. Titles can leave the service, so access can end even while your Premium subscription continues.
“Every classic game can be downloaded.”
No. Sony specifically says that a wide selection of classic PS3 games is streaming-only. Check each title’s available play method.
