Yes—downloaded open-world RPGs from the PlayStation Plus Game Catalog can be played offline. If the game comes from the Extra or Premium/Deluxe catalog, the console must connect to PSN at least once every seven days to validate your membership. Monthly downloadable games use a different entitlement rule and are not subject to that seven-day catalog check.
Downloading and streaming are not interchangeable. A download stores the game and its saves on your console and supports purchased DLC. Streaming requires an active internet connection, stores saves in PlayStation streaming storage, and does not support DLC or several sharing and broadcasting features.

Which PlayStation Plus tier includes an open-world RPG?
Access depends on how the game is offered, not simply on its genre. PlayStation Plus has a monthly-game entitlement and a separate Game Catalog entitlement.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors| Plan | What it includes | How an open-world RPG is accessed | Offline consideration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Essential | Monthly downloadable games, online multiplayer and 100GB of cloud storage | Only if the RPG is one of the monthly games available to your account | Monthly games do not use the Game Catalog’s seven-day validation rule |
| Extra | Everything in Essential plus the Game Catalog | Download eligible catalog RPGs to a PS5 or PS4 | Connect to PSN at least once every seven days |
| Premium | Everything in Extra plus the Classics Catalog, cloud streaming and game trials | Download catalog RPGs or stream supported titles | Downloaded catalog games require seven-day validation; streaming is always online |
| Deluxe | The higher catalog tier offered in markets where Premium is not available | Download eligible catalog RPGs; exact features depend on the country or region | Downloaded catalog games require seven-day validation |
Catalog lineups, supported features and plan names vary by country or region and change over time. Check the PlayStation Plus listing shown for your account before assuming a particular RPG is included.

Can you play a downloaded catalog RPG offline?
Yes, after the game has been downloaded and its license has been validated. The seven-day rule is a membership check, not a requirement to keep the console permanently connected.
How the seven-day check works
- While your Extra or Premium/Deluxe membership is active, open the PlayStation Plus Game Catalog and select the RPG.
- Choose Download rather than a streaming option. Wait for the installation to complete.
- Start the game once while the console is connected to PSN. This gives the console an opportunity to verify the catalog license.
- Play offline during the following days. Before seven days have elapsed, connect the console to PSN again so the membership can be validated.
If the console cannot complete that check, the game may show a padlock or refuse to start until it reconnects. A downloaded catalog game is licensed through the subscription; downloading it does not turn it into a permanently owned copy.
What happens when a game leaves the catalog?
Catalog access ends when the title is removed, even if the files remain installed on your console. You must either restore an eligible subscription after the title is still available to you or purchase the game separately. The seven-day connection does not preserve access to a title that has left the service.

How monthly games differ
A monthly downloadable game follows the monthly-game entitlement attached to your membership. It is not subject to the Game Catalog’s once-every-seven-days validation check. Do not confuse that rule with permanent ownership: the entitlement still depends on the conditions of the monthly-game benefit and an eligible membership.
Download or stream: what changes?
Premium subscribers may see both options for supported games. Choose a download when you need reliable offline play, DLC or the full set of console features. Choose streaming when you want to start without installing the game and have a stable connection.
| Feature | Downloaded game | Streamed game |
|---|---|---|
| Internet connection | Needed for the initial license check and at least once every seven days for Extra or Premium/Deluxe catalog games | Required while playing |
| Save location | Saved data is stored on the PS5 or PS4 console | Saved data is stored in PlayStation streaming storage |
| Moving saves between modes | Use Plus cloud storage to upload or download a save | Use Plus cloud storage; the save does not move automatically |
| DLC and add-ons | Supported for downloaded catalog games when the content is available for that title | Not supported while streaming |
| Bandwidth | No streaming bandwidth requirement after installation, apart from license checks | At least 5 Mbps broadband; 15 Mbps is recommended for 1080p streaming |
| Sharing and remote features | Normal console features are available subject to the game and system | Broadcasting, Share Play, Share Screen and Remote Play are disabled or limited |
Streaming bandwidth and feature limits
PlayStation Support specifies at least 5 Mbps broadband for cloud streaming and 15 Mbps for 1080p. Those figures describe the connection threshold, not a guarantee of image quality or latency. Streaming also disables or limits broadcasting, Share Play, Share Screen and Remote Play, so a streamed session may behave differently from an installed copy even when the game itself is identical.

Where are saves stored, and will they transfer?
Downloaded and streamed versions use different save locations. A downloaded RPG writes its save to the console’s PS5 or PS4 saved-data storage. A streamed session writes to PlayStation streaming storage. Switching from one mode to the other does not copy the save automatically.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Move a save from streaming to a download
- Finish the streamed session and allow the game to save.
- On the streaming device, upload the save to PlayStation Plus cloud storage. On PS5, open Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings, choose the relevant saved-data category, then select Upload or Delete from Console Storage as applicable. On PS4, use Settings > Application Saved Data Management > Upload to Online Storage.
- Install the RPG on the PS5 or PS4 and sign in with the same PlayStation Network account.
- Open the saved-data settings on the console and choose Download from Cloud Storage for the game.
- Start the downloaded game and confirm that the expected save appears. If there are several files, check their timestamps before replacing a newer local save.
Move a console save into streaming
- Upload the console save to Plus cloud storage from the PS5 or PS4 saved-data settings.
- Start the streamed version using the same account and open its save-management option.
- Download the cloud copy into streaming storage when prompted.
The cloud is the handoff point; there is no automatic synchronization simply because both versions use the same account. A save made after the last upload remains on its original platform until you upload it again.
Cloud-storage limits
PlayStation Plus cloud storage supports up to 100GB of PS5 saved data and up to 100GB of PS4 saved data. PS4 saved data is limited to 1,000 files. These limits apply to the cloud storage available for the corresponding console data, so review and delete old files if an upload fails because the space or file limit has been reached.

Can you use DLC with a PlayStation Plus RPG?
Yes, when you download the catalog game to your console. You can buy DLC and add-ons for a downloaded catalog RPG and use them with that installed game, provided the base game and add-on are available for your account and region.
Why DLC does not work during streaming
PlayStation’s streaming FAQ states that DLC and add-on content is not supported when streaming a title. If an add-on is important to your playthrough, download the base game and the DLC instead of launching the streamed version.
What happens when the subscription expires?
If your membership expires, access to the catalog game ends, and so does access to DLC and add-ons associated with that game. The same result occurs if the base game leaves the service. Restoring an eligible subscription can restore access when the title remains available; purchasing the title separately is the other route identified for regaining access.
Best Value
- High-speed battles that allow you to switch your play style known as the Style-Shift Linear Motion Battle System
- Now remastered with quality-of-life enhancements such as auto-saving, no encounters, improved graphics, and more
- A stunning story and rewarding experience that includes previously released content
- Tales of Graces f Remastered is an action RPG with high-speed battles
- 1 Offline Player (up to 4 players during battle)
DLC is therefore not an independent replacement for the base game. Buying an expansion does not preserve access to a catalog copy that you can no longer launch.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Practical setup for an offline playthrough
Before leaving an internet connection
- Confirm that your Extra or Premium/Deluxe membership is active.
- Check the RPG’s catalog listing and note whether it is scheduled to leave the service.
- Download every update, the base game and any desired DLC.
- Launch the game once while signed in to PSN.
- Upload a current save to Plus cloud storage so you have a recovery copy.
- Plan to reconnect before the seven-day validation window ends.
While playing offline
- Use the installed version, not the streaming shortcut.
- Keep the console’s local save intact; do not delete it to make room unless it has been uploaded first.
- If the game suddenly displays a lock, reconnect to PSN before troubleshooting the installation.
Troubleshooting common access problems
The downloaded game is locked offline
Reconnect the console to PSN and confirm that the correct account is signed in and the subscription is active. If the title has left the catalog, the weekly check cannot restore it. On PS5, you can also try Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Restore Licenses; on PS4, use Settings > Account Management > Restore Licenses.
The save is missing after switching from streaming
Check that both sessions used the same PlayStation Network account, then upload the newest save from the original mode and download it into the destination mode. Because saves do not move automatically, starting the game before downloading the cloud copy can create a new, empty local save.
An add-on appears unavailable
Streaming does not support DLC. Download the game and confirm that the catalog entitlement is still active. If the base title has expired or left the catalog, its associated DLC is unavailable until you restore access to the title or purchase it.
Streaming quality is poor or unavailable
Check that the connection reaches at least 5 Mbps, or 15 Mbps for 1080p. If you need broadcasting, Share Play, Share Screen or Remote Play, use the downloaded version because streaming disables or limits those features.
Which option is right for your play style?
- Choose Extra and download if offline travel, DLC or consistent performance matters most.
- Choose Premium and stream if you have the required connection and want to avoid a large installation, while accepting the feature and DLC limits.
- Use cloud storage deliberately when moving between modes; treat it as a manual transfer step rather than automatic synchronization.
- Buy the game separately if you want access independent of catalog rotation and subscription status.
The decisive questions are whether the RPG is a monthly entitlement or a catalog title, whether you will download or stream it, and whether you need DLC or offline sessions. Availability remains subject to the current catalog, your country or region and the plan attached to your account.
