PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium include the Game Catalog. Essential does not. All three plans include online multiplayer and monthly games, while Premium adds the Classics Catalog, Game Trials and cloud streaming where available.
The short answer
If access to an on-demand library of PlayStation games is the deciding benefit, choose between Extra and Premium. Essential includes the core PlayStation Plus benefits and monthly games, but it does not include the Game Catalog.

Extra adds the Game Catalog to Essential’s benefits and also includes Ubisoft+ Classics. Premium includes everything in Extra, then adds the Classics Catalog, Game Trials and cloud streaming in supported regions and on supported devices. The catalog is a changing subscription library: its contents vary by country, tier and time, so a game’s presence should be checked in your local catalog before you subscribe.
What the Game Catalog is—and what it is not
The Game Catalog is the large, rotating library attached to the Extra and Premium tiers. PlayStation describes it as containing “hundreds of games,” but the official pages do not publish a fixed number. That description should not be treated as a promise that a particular title, series or number of games will remain available.

- Redeem for anything on PlayStationStore: games, add-ons, PlayStationPlus and more.
- Everything you want to play. Choose from the largest library of PlayStation content.

Essential’s Monthly Games benefit is separate. Essential members receive the monthly-game benefit, but that does not grant access to the Game Catalog. Premium’s Classics Catalog is also separate: it focuses on classic titles and is included only with Premium. Game Trials are another Premium-only benefit and should not be confused with full Game Catalog access.
PlayStation’s official plan comparison lists the same core membership benefits across the three plans: online multiplayer, monthly games, discounts, exclusive content, Share Play and cloud storage. The difference is the additional library and Premium features layered on top of that common base.
In practical terms, decide whether you want the monthly games and shared membership benefits, or whether you also want a separate library to browse on demand. A monthly-game offer and a catalog listing are not interchangeable: Essential supplies the former, while Extra and Premium supply the latter. Likewise, Premium’s Classics Catalog is an additional collection, not another name for the Game Catalog.

PlayStation’s plan comparison is available at the official PlayStation Plus plan page. Benefit names and availability can differ by region, so use the store for your country when you make the final decision.
The table also shows why the choice is not simply “which plan has the most games?” Essential is the lower-cost fit when the shared benefits meet your needs. Extra is the first tier with the Game Catalog. Premium keeps that same Game Catalog access and layers on other benefits; it is not required just to get the catalog.
PlayStation Plus Essential: the core plan without the Game Catalog
Essential is the right fit when your main reasons for subscribing are online multiplayer, the monthly games and standard membership discounts rather than an on-demand library.
What Essential includes
- Online multiplayer for supported PlayStation games.
- Monthly games.
- Member discounts.
- Exclusive content.
- Share Play.
- Cloud storage.
What Essential does not include
- The Game Catalog.
- The Classics Catalog.
- Premium Game Trials.
- Premium cloud streaming benefits.
The absence of the Game Catalog is the key limitation for this comparison. Upgrading from Essential to Extra is the first step that adds catalog access; moving from Essential to Premium adds the Extra library plus Premium-specific features.

Essential can still make sense if you already choose games individually and mainly need the shared membership benefits. Do not select it on the assumption that the monthly games benefit opens the Extra or Premium library: PlayStation lists these as distinct benefits, and Essential does not include Game Catalog access.
PlayStation Plus Extra: the tier to choose for the Game Catalog
Extra is the straightforward choice when you want the Game Catalog and do not specifically need Premium’s classics, trials or streaming features. It includes Essential’s core benefits and adds download access to the Game Catalog.
What Extra adds
- Access to the Game Catalog.
- Download access to catalog games.
- Ubisoft+ Classics.
PlayStation describes the Game Catalog as a library with hundreds of games and additions over time. Because it is a subscription catalog, the important question is not only how many games are advertised, but whether the title you want is listed for your country and tier when you are ready to play.

Who should stop at Extra?
Choose Extra when your priority is playing eligible catalog games by downloading them to your console and the Premium-only features do not justify a higher price. Extra already supplies the central benefit named in this comparison—the Game Catalog—so Premium is not required merely to obtain catalog access.
Extra is also the clearest comparison point if you are weighing the upgrade from Essential. You are paying for an additional library and Ubisoft+ Classics on top of the core plan, not for a replacement for the Essential benefits. Before committing, compare the current catalog against the games you actually want and the length of time you expect to use the membership.
PlayStation Plus Premium: the Game Catalog plus additional features
Premium includes all Extra benefits, including the Game Catalog, and adds three headline features: the Classics Catalog, Game Trials and cloud streaming where available. The US comparison page also lists a Sony Pictures Catalog as a Premium benefit.
Premium’s additional benefits
- Classics Catalog: a separate collection of classic games.
- Game Trials: a way to try selected games under the terms offered for the trial.
- Cloud streaming: available only where PlayStation supports it and subject to regional and device requirements.
- Sony Pictures Catalog: listed on the US comparison page; check the local PlayStation page for regional applicability.
When Premium makes sense
Premium is worth comparing with Extra when you actively want classic titles, trials or supported cloud streaming. If you only want the Game Catalog for downloads, Extra provides that benefit without requiring the Premium upgrade. Streaming should be treated as a location- and device-dependent feature, not a universal entitlement that works identically in every country.
For a Premium decision, check each added feature separately. A regional plan page may list different benefits, and streaming in particular has location and device conditions. Do not assume that seeing a game in the Game Catalog means it can also be streamed, or that a streaming feature described for one market is available for your account.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsUS prices: monthly, three-month and annual plans
The following prices were displayed on PlayStation’s US pages at the time of the price snapshot. They are US storefront prices, can change, and are not a global price list. Check your local PlayStation Store before purchasing.
| Tier | Monthly | Every three months | Annual | Annual plan’s average per month |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Essential | $10.99 | $27.99 | $79.99 | About $6.67 |
| Extra | $16.99 | $43.99 | $134.99 | About $11.25 |
| Premium | $19.99 | $54.99 | $159.99 | About $13.33 |
At those US prices, Extra costs $6 more than Essential per month, $16 more on the three-month option and $55 more on the annual option. Premium costs $3 more than Extra per month, $11 more every three months and $25 more annually. Those differences describe the displayed prices only; taxes, promotions, renewal prices and local currency pricing may change the amount you pay.
For the official US figures and plan details, see PlayStation’s plan comparison and PlayStation’s games and plans page.
The annual averages are simple divisions of the displayed annual totals by 12; they are not a separate monthly billing option. For a rough budget comparison, Extra’s annual plan averages about $4.58 more per month than Essential’s annual plan. Premium averages about $2.08 more per month than Extra’s annual plan. Those calculations can help frame the tradeoff, but only if you are comfortable paying the annual total up front and expect to use the tier over that period.
Compare like with like when choosing a term. A monthly price versus an annual average does not show the same payment schedule: the annual figure is paid as an annual plan, while the monthly option is billed monthly. The most useful cost question is how much additional value you expect from catalog access or Premium’s features relative to the plan you would otherwise buy. The listed US prices are a snapshot, not a guarantee of the price on your account today.

How to decide between Essential, Extra and Premium
Choose Essential if your priority is online multiplayer
Essential covers the shared membership features, including online multiplayer, monthly games, discounts, exclusive content, Share Play and cloud storage. It is the only tier in this comparison that does not provide the Game Catalog.
Choose Extra if the Game Catalog is the deciding benefit
Extra is the direct answer for players who want a downloadable library of catalog games. It includes the Essential benefits and Ubisoft+ Classics, without requiring the Premium upgrade.
Choose Premium if you will use its additions
Premium adds value only through features beyond Extra: the Classics Catalog, Game Trials, cloud streaming where supported and the Sony Pictures Catalog listed for the US. If none of those matters to you, compare the price difference against your expected use rather than paying more for the same Game Catalog access.
Use a two-question test
- Do you need an on-demand catalog? If no, Essential may be sufficient. If yes, continue with Extra or Premium.
- Do you specifically want classics, trials or supported streaming? If no, Extra is the focused choice. If yes, investigate Premium’s local availability and price.
You can make the decision more concrete by naming the benefit you are buying. For Essential, that might be online multiplayer or the monthly games. For Extra, it is Game Catalog access and Ubisoft+ Classics. For Premium, it is one or more additions beyond Extra. If you cannot identify a Premium feature you expect to use, the fact that Premium also includes the Game Catalog is not, by itself, a reason to pay more than Extra.
Also consider whether your main reason for subscribing depends on one specific title. If so, check that title first, then compare the subscription term and price in your own store. A broad “hundreds of games” description cannot tell you whether the game you want is included today, and a longer plan does not make an individual catalog listing permanent.
Catalog availability changes by country and over time
PlayStation states that the library varies by tier and over time. A game shown in one country’s catalog may not appear in another country’s catalog, and a game available today may later leave or be replaced. The “hundreds of games” description therefore describes the scale of the service, not a permanent list.
PS4 additions from January 2026
PlayStation’s official plan information says PS4 games will be added only intermittently from January 2026. That policy matters if you are choosing a plan mainly for a steady stream of PS4 additions: do not assume additions will arrive at the same pace as before.

Premium cloud streaming has regional and device requirements. The US information also notes that streaming availability excludes overseas territories. Before paying for Premium for streaming, verify that your country and intended device are supported on the current local PlayStation page.
These caveats affect different parts of the decision. Region and time can affect which games appear in the library; region and device conditions affect whether a Premium feature such as streaming is usable. Check both when relevant instead of treating the plan name as a universal feature list.
How to check whether a particular game is included
Because catalog contents change, verify the individual game rather than relying on the tier name or a general catalog-size claim.

- Redeem for anything on PlayStationStore: games, add-ons, PlayStationPlus and more.
- Everything you want to play. Choose from the largest library of PlayStation content.
- Use gift card funds to contribute towards PlayStationPlus memberships.
- Open the official PlayStation Plus games and plans page for your country or region.
- Look up the title in the current Game Catalog listing and confirm that it is associated with the tier you plan to buy.
- Check the page’s region and platform information before assuming the same listing applies to your account.
- If you are considering Premium for streaming, confirm the streaming and device requirements separately; catalog inclusion alone does not establish streaming availability.
- Recheck immediately before subscribing if the game is the main reason for the purchase, because PlayStation can change the library over time.
This process protects against two common mistakes: confusing Monthly Games with the Game Catalog and assuming that a title advertised elsewhere remains available in every market.

Assuming Essential includes the catalog
Essential’s monthly games are not the same benefit as the Game Catalog. If catalog access is mandatory, start at Extra.
Paying for Premium when Extra meets the need
Both Extra and Premium include the Game Catalog. Premium’s higher price is justified only by the additional features you expect to use, such as classics, trials or supported streaming.
Treating a catalog-size claim as a permanent count
“Hundreds of games” is PlayStation’s broad description, not a fixed inventory. Individual titles and the overall selection can change by date, tier and region.
Assuming streaming works everywhere
Cloud streaming is subject to regional and device conditions, and the US page notes exclusions for overseas territories. Verify support for your location before selecting Premium for that reason.
Using US prices as a worldwide quote
The dollar figures above come from the US storefront. Local prices, taxes, currencies and promotions may differ, so use your own PlayStation Store for the amount that will actually be charged.
Confusing the Classics Catalog with the Game Catalog
Both names describe libraries, but they are separate benefits. Extra includes the Game Catalog; Premium includes that catalog and adds the Classics Catalog. If you want the standard Game Catalog, you do not need Premium solely because it has “Catalog” in the feature name.
Assuming a feature is identical in every country
PlayStation’s plan pages and feature availability can differ by region. This is especially important when comparing Premium’s streaming and the Sony Pictures Catalog listed on the US page. Check the local plan description rather than transferring US benefits or prices to another market.

Can a PlayStation gift card pay for Plus?
PlayStation says gift-card credit can be used toward any PlayStation Plus membership, and cards are sold through online and physical retailers. Its gift-card information is available at the PlayStation gift-card page. PlayStation Direct also lists digital gift cards and a PlayStation Plus gift-card category at its gift-card store.
Best Value
- Redeem for anything on PlayStationStore: games, add-ons, PlayStationPlus and more.
- Everything you want to play. Choose from the largest library of PlayStation content.
- Use gift card funds to contribute towards PlayStationPlus memberships.
A gift-card denomination is not automatically equivalent to one specific tier. Check the current price, your account region and any applicable taxes before deciding how much credit to buy. Retailer stock and promotions can change independently of the membership prices shown above.
Gift-card credit is a payment option, not a separate membership tier or a guarantee that a particular denomination will cover a full subscription. Match the amount to the current price in the account’s region, and account for any tax or price change before choosing a card value.
Bottom line for each type of player
- Need online multiplayer and monthly games only: Essential.
- Want the Game Catalog for downloads: Extra.
- Want the Game Catalog plus classics, trials or supported cloud streaming: Premium, after confirming regional availability.
The answer to the title’s question is simple: Extra and Premium include the Game Catalog; Essential does not. The harder decision is whether Premium’s additional features justify its higher local price and whether the games and services you want are currently available in your region.

Is the Game Catalog included with PlayStation Plus Essential?
No. Essential includes monthly games and the shared core benefits, but Game Catalog access starts with Extra. Premium also includes the Game Catalog.
Which PlayStation Plus tier includes the Game Catalog?
Both Extra and Premium include it. Extra is the tier to choose if the Game Catalog is the benefit you want; Premium adds the Classics Catalog, Game Trials and cloud streaming where available.
Are Monthly Games the same as the Game Catalog?
No. PlayStation lists Monthly Games and the Game Catalog as separate benefits. Essential includes Monthly Games but not the Game Catalog; Extra and Premium include the Game Catalog.
Does Premium have a different Game Catalog from Extra?
Both tiers include Game Catalog access. Premium includes Extra’s benefits and adds the separate Classics Catalog, Game Trials and cloud streaming where supported.
Can I stream every game in the Game Catalog with Premium?
Do not assume so. Cloud streaming has regional and device requirements, and catalog inclusion alone does not establish streaming availability. Check the current local PlayStation information for your location and device.
Are the US PlayStation Plus prices the same everywhere?
No. The prices shown here are US storefront figures. Local prices, currencies, taxes and promotions can differ, so check your country’s PlayStation Store before buying.
Will a specific game stay in the Game Catalog?
There is no guarantee that a particular title will remain. PlayStation says the library changes over time and varies by region, so check your local catalog immediately before subscribing if one game is the main reason.
The Bottom Line
Extra and Premium include the PlayStation Plus Game Catalog; Essential does not. Choose Extra for the catalog and its downloads. Consider Premium only if you also want its Classics Catalog, Game Trials or supported cloud streaming. Check the current local catalog, feature availability and price before subscribing.
