For most players, PlayStation Plus Extra offers the best game-library value. In the US, its $134.99 annual price adds the downloadable Game Catalog and Ubisoft+ Classics to every Essential benefit, while Premium costs $159.99 and mainly adds the Classics Catalog, selected Game Trials and cloud streaming. Essential remains the sensible choice if you only need online multiplayer and monthly games.
This comparison uses the US plans and catalog information available on October 16, 2026. Prices, included titles, regional benefits and streaming support can change, so check the live PlayStation Plus catalog before subscribing for a particular game.

Quick comparison: Essential, Extra and Premium
| Tier | 12-month US price | Modern downloadable library | Classic games | Trials and streaming | Other benefits |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Essential | $79.99 | Monthly Games only; no Game Catalog | Not included | No Game Trials or cloud streaming benefit | Online multiplayer, discounts, cloud storage and Share Play |
| Extra | $134.99 | Game Catalog with hundreds of games, including blockbusters and indies; Ubisoft+ Classics | Classics Catalog not included | Game Trials and Premium cloud streaming not included | Everything in Essential |
| Premium | $159.99 | Everything in Extra | Classics Catalog | Selected Game Trials and cloud streaming for supported catalog content | Everything in Extra, plus Sony Pictures Catalog access |
The annual gap is $55 between Essential and Extra, $25 between Extra and Premium, and $80 between Essential and Premium. Those differences matter more than the tier names: Extra pays for a broad modern library, whereas Premium is a feature upgrade aimed at people who will actually use classics, trials or streaming.

What PlayStation Plus Essential includes
Monthly Games instead of a permanent catalog
Essential is the entry tier for subscribers who want the core PlayStation Plus service. Its game benefit is the changing Monthly Games selection. You claim the offered games during the eligibility period and can continue using them while your membership remains active, subject to the service rules. Essential does not include the separate Game Catalog, Ubisoft+ Classics, Classics Catalog or Game Trials.
#1 Best Overall
- Redeem for anything on PlayStationStore: games, add-ons, PlayStationPlus and more.
- Everything you want to play. Choose from the largest library of PlayStation content.
- Use gift card funds to contribute towards PlayStationPlus memberships.
That makes Essential a poor fit if your main goal is browsing a large on-demand collection. It can be good value when you already buy most games individually and simply want a few rotating additions each month.
Online and account benefits
Essential includes online multiplayer, discounts, cloud storage and Share Play. If a game requires PlayStation Plus for online multiplayer, this is the least expensive tier that provides that access. The tier also preserves the practical account features that many console owners use even when they do not regularly download subscription games.
What PlayStation Plus Extra adds
The Game Catalog
Extra includes all Essential benefits and adds the Game Catalog, which PlayStation describes as hundreds of games ranging from genre-defining blockbusters to innovative independent titles. New titles are added regularly, so the catalog is intended to be explored rather than treated as a fixed shelf.
The Tool Desk

You get a substantially broader library than Essential without paying Premium’s additional $25 per year.
Ubisoft+ Classics
Extra also includes Ubisoft+ Classics. This is a separate included collection within the subscription, so it expands the games available to Extra members beyond the main Game Catalog. The exact lineup can change; verify that a particular title is currently included before subscribing because catalog membership is not permanent.
Download-first access
Extra is designed primarily for downloading supported games to a PS4 or PS5 and playing them locally. Downloading avoids the constant bandwidth and latency demands of streaming, which is useful when your connection is limited or your household shares the network. Storage space and download time become the trade-offs, especially for large modern games.
Rank #2

- Everything you want to play. Choose from the largest library of PlayStation content.
- Use gift card funds to contribute towards PlayStationPlus memberships.
What Premium adds beyond Extra
Classics Catalog
Premium includes the entire Extra offering and adds the Classics Catalog. This is the tier to consider when older PlayStation-era games are a central part of your wish list. Premium therefore has a broader overall selection than Extra, but the additional games are concentrated in the classics collection rather than being an automatic expansion of the modern Game Catalog.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIf you rarely play older releases, the Classics Catalog alone may not justify the $25 annual premium. If revisiting legacy titles is the reason you are subscribing, Premium is the only one of these three tiers that provides that catalog access.
Game Trials
Premium provides selected Game Trials. Trials let eligible members try supported games for a limited period before deciding whether to buy them. Availability is title-specific, and a trial is not the same as adding the full game to your library. Treat this feature as a way to reduce purchase risk, not as a guarantee that every new release can be sampled.
Cloud streaming
Premium adds cloud streaming for supported content. PlayStation states that Premium members can choose to download or stream games from the Game Catalog and Classics Catalog when streaming is supported. Streaming availability depends on the game, account region and compatible device.
The catalog guidance lists a minimum connection of 5 Mbps, with at least 15 Mbps recommended for 1080p streaming. Those figures describe bandwidth requirements, not a promise of perfect responsiveness. Wi-Fi congestion, latency, packet loss and other household traffic can still affect image quality or controls. A wired connection or a strong, uncongested network is generally safer for action games.
Supported streaming devices listed for the catalog are PS4, PS5 and PC, but not every title is streamable on every device. Check the play option shown for the individual game before assuming that a PC session or console stream will work.
Rank #3
- Redeem for anything on PlayStationStore: games, add-ons, PlayStationPlus and more.

Which tier has the most games?
Most modern downloadable games: Extra and Premium are tied
Premium contains the Game Catalog that Extra has, so it does not automatically provide a larger modern catalog. Both tiers receive the Game Catalog and Ubisoft+ Classics. Premium’s extra library comes from the Classics Catalog, and its value also comes from trials and streaming.
Therefore, the answer to “Which PS Plus tier has the most games?” depends on what you count. For current downloadable PS4 and PS5-style releases, Extra and Premium start from the same Game Catalog. For the widest combined mix of modern and classic titles, Premium has the broader selection.
Best low-cost access to changing games: Essential
Essential does not compete on catalog size. Its advantage is a lower annual cost and the rotating Monthly Games benefit. Choose it when the value you need is online multiplayer plus the ability to claim each month’s offerings, rather than an always-available menu of hundreds of games.
Price and value in the US
| Comparison | Annual difference | What the extra money buys |
|---|---|---|
| Essential to Extra | $55 more per year | Game Catalog and Ubisoft+ Classics |
| Extra to Premium | $25 more per year | Classics Catalog, selected Game Trials, cloud streaming and Sony Pictures Catalog |
| Essential to Premium | $80 more per year | All Extra and Premium library and feature additions |
These are official US 12-month prices reported for the plans on October 16, 2026. They are not a promise of future pricing, monthly billing rates or prices in other countries. Sony can change subscription prices and regional offerings, so use the current checkout page for the amount you will actually pay.
Dividing the annual prices by 12 gives rough monthly equivalents of $6.67 for Essential, $11.25 for Extra and $13.33 for Premium. Those calculations are only a way to compare annual costs; they should not be mistaken for the availability or price of a monthly plan.
Is Extra worth it over Essential?
Extra is usually worth the additional $55 when you expect to play several catalog games during the year. The Game Catalog lets you sample different genres without buying each title separately, and Ubisoft+ Classics adds another included collection. The value is strongest for players who enjoy variety, are setting up a new console, or want to catch up on games they missed.
Rank #4
- Redeem for anything on PlayStationStore: games, add-ons, PlayStationPlus and more.
- Everything you want to play. Choose from the largest library of PlayStation content.
- Use gift card funds to contribute towards PlayStationPlus memberships.
Essential is the better financial choice when your play pattern is narrower:

- You need online multiplayer but do not browse subscription catalogs.
- You are satisfied with claiming the Monthly Games selection.
- Your internet connection or storage situation makes frequent downloads inconvenient.
Before upgrading, look at the live Game Catalog and mark the titles you genuinely expect to play. A long list of interesting games is not the same as completed playtime. If only one desired game is included and you would finish it quickly, compare the subscription cost with buying that game outright.
Is Premium worth it for the classics?
Premium is worth considering when the Classics Catalog is a primary reason for subscribing. It is the only tier in this comparison that includes that catalog, and it also supplies streaming and selected trials. The extra $25 per year over Extra is relatively small compared with the Essential-to-Extra jump, but it is still wasted if you will use none of those additions.
Ask yourself three questions:
- Are there multiple Classics Catalog games you intend to play, rather than one curiosity?
- Will you use Game Trials to test supported games before buying?
- Do you have a compatible device and a reliable connection for cloud streaming?
If the answer to all three is no, Extra normally delivers the better library value. Premium does not turn the modern Game Catalog into a permanently larger or newer collection.
Can you stream PS Plus games?
Yes, but the Premium tier is required and streaming is limited to supported games, devices and regions. Premium members can stream eligible games from both the Game Catalog and Classics Catalog instead of downloading them. The listed baseline is 5 Mbps, or 15 Mbps for 1080p.

- You want to start a game without waiting for a large download.
- Your console has limited free storage.
- You want to play supported catalog titles on a PC.
- You are testing a game before committing to a full download or purchase.
When downloading is safer
- Your connection has high latency, unstable Wi-Fi or data limits.
- You play timing-sensitive multiplayer or action games.
- You want consistent image quality during busy household periods.
- The particular title is downloadable but not streamable on your device.
Open the individual game listing and confirm whether Download and Stream options are shown for your account and device. Meeting the bandwidth figure alone does not make every catalog title streamable.

Catalog rotation, removals and the PS4 change
A subscription catalog is temporary access, not ownership. A game can leave the service, and an included title can be unavailable when you return to it later. This matters if you are choosing a tier for one specific game: check its current listing and the stated availability rather than relying on an old article or a remembered inclusion.
PlayStation warns that from January 2026, PS4 games will be added only intermittently. That does not mean PS4 titles disappear, but it does make future growth less predictable for readers whose main interest is PS4. Extra and Premium still provide access to the titles currently listed in their catalogs; the warning concerns the pace and predictability of future additions.
How to manage rotation risk
- Start games you plan to finish soon after downloading them.
- Do not assume a title will remain because it is prominent in a catalog menu.
- Check the live catalog before renewing for a specific game.
- Buy a favorite game if you want permanent access independent of subscription status and catalog changes.
Choosing by player profile
The online-focused player
Choose Essential if online multiplayer is the main requirement and you already have a stable personal library. You receive the core online service, discounts, cloud storage and Share Play without paying for catalogs you may not use.
The game sampler
Choose Extra if you like trying different genres, want a large downloadable menu, or are catching up on modern games. The Game Catalog and Ubisoft+ Classics provide the broadest value per dollar for most players.
The retro-focused player
Choose Premium if the Classics Catalog contains the games you specifically want. Confirm the current regional lineup first, because classic availability can vary and catalog membership can change.
The try-before-buy player
Choose Premium when selected Game Trials will influence your purchases. Check whether the games you are considering actually have trials; the feature is not universal.
The storage-constrained or PC player
Premium is the relevant option if you want to stream supported catalog games to PS4, PS5 or PC. Confirm device and title support and ensure your connection can sustain at least the listed 5 Mbps baseline, or 15 Mbps for 1080p.

The PS4-only library hunter
Extra is generally the most balanced choice for a PS4 player who wants a broad catalog today. Premium adds classics and streaming, but Sony’s statement that PS4 games will be added only intermittently means no tier guarantees a steady flow of new PS4 additions.
Quick Recap
A practical way to decide before paying
- List your must-play games. Separate modern Game Catalog titles, Ubisoft+ Classics titles and Classics Catalog titles. A game must be in the correct catalog for the tier to matter.
- Check the live listings. Catalog membership and streaming eligibility can change, so verify each important title on the current PlayStation Plus page for your US account.
- Count realistic playtime. Compare the annual price with the number of games you will actually start and finish, not the total number displayed.
- Decide whether downloading is acceptable. Extra works well for local downloads; Premium’s streaming option is useful only when your device, region, connection and title all support it.
- Price the feature you will use. Treat the $25 Premium difference as payment for classics, trials, streaming and the Sony Pictures Catalog. If none matters, stop at Extra.
- Recheck before renewal. Prices, catalog membership, regional availability and future additions can change during a 12-month term.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Assuming Premium has a much larger modern catalog. Its modern Game Catalog is the same one included with Extra; the main library expansion is the Classics Catalog.
- Confusing Monthly Games with the Game Catalog. Essential’s monthly selection is not the same as Extra’s on-demand catalog.
- Reading “hundreds of games” as a permanent guarantee. The Game Catalog changes, and individual titles can leave.
- Assuming every game can be streamed. Streaming is title-, device- and region-dependent, even for Premium members.
- Using the 5 Mbps figure as a quality guarantee. It is the listed minimum; 1080p calls for 15 Mbps, and network stability still affects play.
- Ignoring the PS4 addition schedule. Since January 2026, PS4 games are added only intermittently, so future PS4 growth is less predictable.
- Paying for Premium because it sounds like the complete tier. Premium is best understood as Extra plus targeted features, not an automatic requirement for a better modern library.
