There is no lasting winner based on “exclusive” alone. To decide whether PlayStation or Xbox has the better game library for you, list the games you want, check which platforms each supports, and compare how you can access them—by purchase or subscription. A game published by a platform owner is not necessarily playable only on that platform.
What counts as an exclusive?
The word can describe different things, so define it before comparing libraries:
- Console-exclusive: The game is playable on one console platform and not the competing console. It may still be available on PC.
- Platform-published or first-party: A platform owner publishes or is associated with the game. That does not, by itself, mean the game is limited to that platform.
- Timed exclusive: A game launches on one platform first, with other versions potentially arriving later. Treat this as a claim about a particular release window, not a permanent boundary.
PlayStation’s PS5 games catalog distinguishes available-now games from upcoming ones and includes a PlayStation Studios section. It also lists titles such as Halo: Campaign Evolved and Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 among PS5 games. The catalog is useful for discovery, but neither its platform framing nor a studio label proves that a title is console-exclusive. Check each game’s supported platforms and release status.
Xbox’s June 8, 2025 showcase recap also illustrates why platform association and console exclusivity are different: it names Xbox-associated releases with versions planned or listed for platforms such as PlayStation 5 and Steam. That recap describes plans announced at the time; it is not a current, exhaustive catalog.

How to compare the libraries
- Write down your must-play games. Start with the specific titles you care about rather than a general platform reputation or an unsourced library-size ranking.
- Check every game’s platforms. Look for the current official listing and distinguish console-only games from titles also available on PC or the other console.
- Separate what is playable now from what is upcoming. An announcement or pre-order listing is not a game you can play today.
- Compare access, not just availability. Note whether you would buy each game or play it through a subscription. Subscription access is not ownership, and catalog listings can change.
- Check your region, plan, and device. Confirm that the game is available in your market and, if subscribing, included in the exact plan and supported on the device you intend to use.
How subscriptions affect the comparison
The Xbox Game Pass catalog can be filtered by subscription plan and platform, including console, Windows PC, handheld, and cloud. It separates categories such as “coming to Game Pass” and “leaving soon.” Xbox says game titles, numbers, features, and availability can vary over time and by region, plan, and platform. Check the catalog for your own plan and device instead of assuming a title is included everywhere.
Some Xbox games support Xbox Play Anywhere, but that benefit is title-specific. In its 2025 showcase recap, Xbox Wire described the feature this way: “With a single purchase, you can play with Xbox, including your progress and achievements, across Xbox console, PC and Xbox Ally—at no additional cost.” Confirm that a particular game supports Play Anywhere before relying on cross-device access or shared progress.

Why library-size claims can mislead
The official materials cited here do not provide comparable, dated totals for the PlayStation and Xbox libraries. PlayStation’s PS5 page is a discovery and promotion catalog, while the Xbox Game Pass catalog is dynamic and filterable. They are not like-for-like inventory counts, so they cannot establish which platform has more games.
A raw total would also answer less than a must-play comparison: it would not tell you whether your preferred games are on your console, available now, included in your subscription, or playable in your region. Compare those details title by title.

A practical decision rule
Choose the platform that gives you access to more of your own must-play games on the devices you plan to use, through the purchase or subscription route you prefer. Before deciding, verify each title’s current platforms, release status, and—where relevant—regional and plan availability. Recheck close to purchase: both platform catalogs and announced release plans can change.
