Neither method is universally better. Watch representative players when you need to know whether they can understand, navigate or complete something, and where friction occurs. Use a focused survey when you need comparable ratings or self-reported behavior from a broader, relevant audience. For feedback on a particular build, the strongest practical design usually combines task-focused observation with questions about that same session: play shows what happened, and the follow-up helps explain what players thought and why.

The choice should begin with the decision your team must make—not with a favorite tool. Define the player group, the experience they will have, and the inference you need before choosing a questionnaire, an observed session or both.

Start by defining what you mean by “playtest”

“Survey” has a relatively clear meaning here: a questionnaire that collects players’ self-reported perceptions or behavior. It may be retrospective, or it may be administered immediately after controlled gameplay. Those designs are not interchangeable because the time between play and answering affects recall and context.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“Playtest” is less precise in games. Teams use the word for a quantitative perception study, any study involving external players, bug finding, informal self-play, or a mixed-method session in which people play while a researcher observes and then asks questions. A comparison is only meaningful after you state exactly what participants did, what was measured and how evidence was analyzed.

A useful working definition is:

  • Observed playtest: participants play a task or build while the team records actions, hesitation, errors, completion and context; a moderator may probe afterward.
  • Quantitative playtest: participants receive a controlled exposure and complete standardized ratings or other measures, sometimes with hands-on play included.
  • Mixed-method playtest: behavioral observation is paired with ratings, open text or an interview about the same experience.

State which version you ran in the study report. Otherwise, a reader cannot tell whether “playtest feedback” means observed usability evidence, a survey of opinions or a bug list.

Quick decision guide

Need to learn Best starting point What it can answer Main caution
Can players find a feature, understand a tutorial, use controls or complete a level? Observe representative players completing the relevant gameplay What players did, where they hesitated or failed and, when a moderator probes, what they understood A small usability sample identifies possible issues; it does not establish how common those issues are in the whole player population.
How do players rate a known experience, or how often do they report a behavior? A focused questionnaire with suitable participants Comparable opinions or self-reported behavior counts across respondents Recall, ambiguous wording, convenience recruitment and different play histories can make answers difficult to interpret.
Did one version improve on another, or how do players perceive dimensions after a controlled exposure? Controlled play followed by standardized questions, with open text where useful Comparisons tied to an identified game experience Participants and exposure must be comparable, and sampling and analysis must be explained. A 25–35-person design described in a 2005 paper is not a universal requirement.
Why is a rating high or low, or what unexpected issue shaped it? Combine a rating or survey with observation and follow-up probing A connection between self-report, behavior and the context behind surprising scores Mixed methods need a clear question and a plan for integrating different kinds of evidence.

What a survey is good at

Measuring structured opinions

A questionnaire is efficient when every participant should answer the same question on the same scale. You can ask players to rate tutorial clarity, perceived challenge, enjoyment, confidence in a control scheme or the appearance of a level. Standardized response options make it possible to compare builds, segments or checkpoints, provided participants had comparable exposure.

Steve Bromley summarizes the use case succinctly: surveys measure opinions such as whether a level looks good or bad, and behavior such as how many attempts a player reports needing to complete it. That makes a survey appropriate when the team already knows the dimension it wants to measure and needs a consistent answer from many people.

Collecting self-reported behavior

Players can report how often they used a feature, how many attempts they remember, whether they skipped a tutorial or which mode they prefer. Such answers are valuable signals, especially when the behavior is not practical to instrument and the question is narrow and recent. They remain reports, not direct logs of what happened.

Scaling a question across a broader audience

A questionnaire can reach more relevant players than a small moderated session, making it useful for estimating attitudes within the recruited sample or comparing defined groups. The inference is only as strong as the sampling plan. A large number of easy-to-reach respondents does not correct for an audience that differs from the game’s intended players.

Where surveys become unreliable

  • Recall: a retrospective answer may compress several sessions, forget failed attempts or be influenced by the final outcome.
  • Unequal exposure: one respondent may have played for an hour while another saw only a tutorial. Their ratings are not equivalent observations.
  • Question quality: double-barreled, leading or vague wording can produce a precise-looking number with no stable meaning.
  • Recruitment bias: volunteers from a fan community, a developer’s network or a convenience panel may not resemble the target audience.
  • Social and response effects: people may give an answer they think is expected, choose the middle option repeatedly or skip difficult questions.

These are design and interpretation problems, not reasons to abandon surveys. Keep questions focused, identify the exposure, recruit for the intended player definition and describe the limits of the sample.

What observing play reveals

Behavior that players may not recognize

When a player misses an upgrade icon, repeatedly opens the wrong menu or abandons a tutorial, the session records the event and its sequence. Players often cannot accurately explain a behavior later because they did not notice the moment that caused it. Observation captures hesitation, workarounds, misclicks, retries and completion without depending on a retrospective summary.

Friction and “why” questions

Observation is especially useful for questions such as “Where do players get stuck in this level?” and “Why did players take 20 attempts to complete this challenge?” A moderator can ask what the player expected, what a symbol meant to them or what they were trying to do immediately after the event. The probe should clarify the observed episode rather than suggest an answer.

Testing comprehension and task success

If the decision is whether new players notice an upgrade path, understand a tutorial instruction, use a control or defeat a boss, give participants a relevant task and watch the attempt. Record the task wording, build version, starting state, completion criteria, notable pauses and failures. This produces actionable evidence about the design, not merely a general impression.

Limits of a small observed sample

A handful of observed failures can justify investigating or fixing a problem. It cannot, by itself, show what percentage of all players encounter that problem. Small usability studies are for finding possible issues; prevalence estimates require a larger sample and a sampling plan suited to the intended population.

How the methods differ

Dimension Survey Observed or mixed playtest
Primary evidence Self-reported ratings, opinions and remembered behavior Observed actions, outcomes, hesitation and contextual explanations
Best question form “How clear was the tutorial?” or “How many attempts did you report?” “Can players understand and complete the tutorial, and what causes failure?”
Timing Before, during or after play; timing changes what can be recalled During the task, with probing immediately afterward
Scale Can reach many respondents if recruitment is appropriate Usually fewer participants because sessions require observation and analysis
Analysis Distributions, averages or cross-group comparisons, plus text coding Event and task analysis, issue patterns, quotes and links between behavior and explanation
Main risk Recall, wording, exposure and sampling bias Overgeneralizing a small convenience sample or changing behavior through poor moderation

Match the method to the question

“Where do players get stuck in this level?”

Start with observed play. Define the level segment and success condition, then record where players stop, backtrack, die, open menus or ask for help. A short post-task question can reveal whether they misunderstood the objective, could not see a route or made a deliberate choice. A survey alone may tell you that the level felt difficult, but not the location or sequence of events.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“Why did players take 20 attempts to complete this challenge?”

Observe attempts or a representative portion of them and note strategy changes, feedback received and the point at which a run fails. Ask immediately what the player expected and what they changed. If you need to know how frequently players report taking 20 attempts across a defined audience, add a focused questionnaire, but label the result as self-report unless you have telemetry.

“Do players understand how to upgrade their character?”

Give players a natural or specified progression task without teaching the answer. Watch whether they find the upgrade path, recognize requirements and complete an upgrade. Probe the meaning of labels and icons afterward. A rating question about upgrade clarity can quantify perceived confidence, but it cannot substitute for seeing whether the player actually performs the task.

“Can players defeat this boss?”

Set a fair starting state and explicit success rule, then observe attempts. Record deaths, strategy, use of cues and whether failure is caused by execution, unclear feedback or an inaccessible control. Follow with a short rating and open question if you need the player’s perceived fairness or difficulty. Separate ability to complete from a stated belief that completion was possible.

A practical combined-study workflow

  1. Agree on the decision. Translate the product decision into a concrete objective, such as determining whether new players notice an upgrade path or where they abandon a tutorial. Write the objective before selecting questions or measures.
  2. Define the intended players. Specify experience level, platform, language or region when relevant, accessibility needs and any ownership or play-history criteria. Recruit against that definition and document convenience-sampling limits instead of treating easy access as representativeness.
  3. Choose the exposure and task. Give participants the relevant build and a task, or let them play naturally when the question concerns spontaneous discovery. Record the build version, starting conditions, task wording and any assistance allowed.
  4. Capture behavior and context. Observe actions, outcomes, pauses, errors, retries and workarounds. Keep notes tied to timestamps or task stages. Do not rely only on a later summary of what happened.
  5. Ask about the same experience soon afterward. Use clear, focused questions. Add standardized ratings when comparison matters and open-ended prompts when you need explanations or unexpected feedback. Avoid asking participants to judge an element they did not encounter.
  6. Analyze each evidence type appropriately. Code observed issues and task outcomes separately from rating distributions and self-reported counts. Look for convergence, such as a missed cue paired with a low clarity rating, and investigate contradictions rather than averaging them away.
  7. Separate discovery from prevalence. Report the number and nature of observed failures, then state separately what the sample can and cannot support about how common they are. Do not turn “three of eight participants struggled” into “37.5% of players struggle” without a design that supports that inference.
  8. Connect findings to the decision. Tell the team which design change, follow-up measurement or release decision the evidence supports. Include participant definition, recruitment, exposure, task, question wording and analysis so another team member can judge the strength of the conclusion.

Electronic Arts’ official playtesting description illustrates this combined pattern: its group playtests collect surveys at checkpoints, while community playtests may use a survey after hands-on play. The exact program design is not a universal template, but it demonstrates why behavior and immediate self-report can be collected in one study.

Designing a survey that produces interpretable feedback

Anchor every question to an exposure

Tell participants which level, build, mode or session they are rating. If exposure differs, record it and analyze groups separately when appropriate. Asking for a global opinion after an undefined amount of play mixes incompatible experiences.

Use one idea per item

Ask about tutorial clarity and tutorial enjoyment separately. Avoid wording that assumes the feature was good, asks two questions at once or uses unexplained terms. A defined scale with labeled endpoints is easier to interpret than a series of adjectives whose meanings vary by player.

Combine comparable ratings with open text

Standardized ratings support comparisons; an adjacent open question can explain an unusually high or low score. Keep the open prompt specific—such as asking what made the boss feel unfair—rather than inviting an unfocused review of the entire game.

Choose timing deliberately

A post-session questionnaire reduces the delay between play and report. A later survey can measure retention or a broader attitude, but it should be described as retrospective and interpreted with the associated recall risk.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Record the variables needed for interpretation

Collect only player characteristics that matter to the decision, such as prior genre experience, familiarity with the series, platform or accessibility configuration. Explain why each is needed and avoid using demographic questions as decoration.

Designing an observation session

Write a task that exposes the decision

Use a realistic goal rather than a checklist that gives away the interface. For an upgrade study, ask the player to improve the character before the next encounter. For a boss study, define what counts as a successful defeat and what resources are available. Keep task wording consistent across participants.

Decide between natural and controlled play

Natural play shows what players discover without instruction. Controlled exposure makes comparisons easier by giving everyone the same build, starting state and time. Choose deliberately and record the choice; do not present a controlled result as if it came from ordinary play.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Moderate without teaching the answer

Use neutral prompts and reserve probing for a meaningful pause, error or completed task. If you provide a hint, log when and what it was, because assistance changes the evidence. Ask what the player expected or intended rather than whether a particular design element was confusing.

Capture enough context to reproduce the issue

Note build, platform, input device, task stage, preceding event and player action. A clip or timestamp can help the team see the sequence, but the report should still explain the issue in words and distinguish observation from interpretation.

Sample size, statistics and what you may claim

Sample size follows the inference you need. A small moderated study can uncover actionable usability problems, but it is not a population survey. If the team needs a prevalence estimate or a precise comparison between segments, plan a larger sample and a recruitment strategy that matches the target audience.

Davis, Steury and Pagulayan reported that their controlled quantitative playtest method generally used 25–35 participants, based on power analyses for the statistical tests they employed. That number belongs to their 2005 method and context; it is not a rule for every game, platform or contemporary study.

The Games User Research 2023 Playtest Survey found that over half of respondents agreed playtesting was extremely important. The figure describes people who answered that survey, and the article cautions that respondents may lean toward teams already interested in playtesting. For any result, state whether the number is a count, a percentage within the recruited sample, an average rating, a self-reported behavior or an observed event. Include uncertainty and limitations that matter to the decision instead of implying more precision than the design supports.

Integrating conflicting evidence

Players say a feature is clear, but they cannot use it

Treat the mismatch as a design signal. The rating may reflect confidence, politeness or a different interpretation of “clear,” while the observed task exposes an operational failure. Recheck the task wording, exposure and moderator behavior, then prioritize the evidence that answers the actual decision.

Players fail, but rate the experience positively

Failure does not automatically mean dissatisfaction. A challenging encounter can be enjoyable, or players may value the learning process. Report task success and enjoyment as separate outcomes; do not collapse them into a single score.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ratings differ between builds

Verify that participants had comparable experience, starting state, session length and question wording. A rating change is easier to attribute to the build when those conditions are controlled and the sample is defined in advance.

Observed issues do not appear in open comments

Absence of a comment is not evidence that the issue did not matter. Players may not recognize the cause or may focus their response on the final outcome. Use the observation record to decide whether a targeted follow-up question or another session is warranted.

Common mistakes and fixes

  • Calling every external-player activity a playtest: name whether it was bug finding, observed usability work, a quantitative perception study or a mixed session.
  • Using a survey to answer a task question: watch the task when the decision concerns comprehension, navigation or completion.
  • Using a few sessions to claim prevalence: report possible issues and plan a suitable larger study if the share of players matters.
  • Ignoring unequal play histories: record exposure and recruit or analyze groups accordingly.
  • Asking broad, retrospective questions: tie questions to a named level, encounter or session and ask soon after play when possible.
  • Changing the build or instructions mid-study without logging it: preserve a versioned protocol and document deviations.
  • Reporting only averages: show distributions, notable subgroups and open explanations when they change the decision.
  • Letting the moderator rescue the player: log every hint and treat assisted outcomes separately from unaided completion.

Microsoft Research’s overview of applied user research in games and the Games User Research practice guidance provide additional methodological context. Treat any tool, sample size or workflow described in those sources as an example to adapt to your decision, audience and constraints.

The practical answer

Choose observation when the question contains can, where or why: can players defeat the boss, where do they get stuck, and why did the challenge take so many attempts? Choose a survey when the question asks for a structured opinion or reported frequency across a defined audience. For a specific build, combine the two: observe a relevant task, ask focused questions immediately afterward, and report behavioral findings separately from claims about population prevalence.
