Play-to-own is gaining attention, but there is no verified evidence that it has already displaced play-to-earn. The distinction is about emphasis: play-to-earn focuses on rewards for participation, while play-to-own focuses on players holding game assets they may be able to use or transfer. A game can combine both. Neither label guarantees that an item will retain value, that a marketplace will exist, or that the game will keep running.
What is the difference between play-to-own and play-to-earn?
These are industry labels, not universal technical or legal categories. In this article, play-to-earn (P2E) means a game model that rewards participation with tokens or other assets that might be exchanged or sold. Play-to-own puts more emphasis on a player holding a game asset and potentially being able to use, trade, or transfer it.
The difference is the value proposition, not necessarily the technology. Earning a reward does not by itself mean the player owns a transferable token. Holding a token does not by itself mean the player earns money by playing. And neither one means that the game’s rules or state run on a blockchain.
The Blockchain Game Alliance’s 2024 report describes P2E as central to blockchain gaming’s rise in 2021, followed by criticism and experimentation with other reward systems. That supports a shift in industry discussion, not proof that one model has won. The Alliance’s research page identifies its 2025 report as the latest survey, but the page does not disclose detailed findings that would establish a market-wide winner.

Does owning a token mean you own the in-game item?
Not necessarily. A token may provide a record of a digital asset or allow its transfer, but the practical rights and benefits depend on the game’s terms and design. The holder may not own the artwork’s copyright or other legal rights, and a token alone cannot guarantee that the item will remain useful or that the game will stay available.

- Does the player receive rewards? This describes compensation or incentives for participation.
- Does the player hold a tokenized asset? This concerns possession and possible transfer of a digital item.
- Does the game run on-chain? This concerns where its logic and state are executed or recorded.
Any combination is possible. A game can offer rewards without tokenized items, use tokens to track item ownership while keeping gameplay off-chain, or put more of its game logic and state on-chain.
What can make a tokenized game asset valuable—or not?
Transferability is only one part of an asset’s usefulness. Its value can depend on whether the game remains live, whether the item still works under the game’s rules, whether trading is supported, and whether buyers exist. A market may also impose fees or restrictions, and a player may not have a supported way to convert an asset into cash.

The U.S. Consumer Financial Protection Bureau’s April 4, 2024 issue spotlight on banking in video games and virtual worlds describes a range of arrangements: some assets stay within a platform, some move through supported or third-party markets, and some markets enable cash-out. It also flags risks including theft, scams, money laundering, sensitive-data use, and limited recourse. These are U.S. policy concerns, not a description of consumer-protection law in every country.
Why do game economies need more than tradable items?
A trading system needs an economy that players can enter and that does not flood the market with unwanted supply. Sky Mavis’s Axie economy documentation describes this tension in its own player-to-player economy: if Axie prices rise too high, entry becomes harder; if supply grows too quickly, inflation can become unhealthy. That is the project’s account of its design challenge, not independent evidence that its economy is sustainable or representative of other games.

Rewards and asset ownership can coexist, but they do not solve economic design on their own. A game still has to manage how items and tokens enter circulation, what creates demand for them, and how rules change over time. The 2022 academic survey “SoK: Play-to-Earn Projects” examines P2E projects through economic and governance models, including token economics, robustness, transparency, attacks, and broader societal challenges. Its framework is useful, though it predates more recent developments.

Is play-to-own the same as fully on-chain gaming?
No. A game can use a blockchain to record who holds an asset while running gameplay elsewhere. A fully on-chain design places more of the game’s logic and state on-chain. The distinction matters because the latter may enable persistence or composability, but blockchain speed and costs can constrain the experience.

In a June 5, 2024 essay, BITKRAFT Ventures’ Nico Vereecke discusses those trade-offs and says it is too soon to know whether fully on-chain games will become a major platform shift. That is an investor’s analysis, not settled industry consensus. A tokenized item alone is not evidence that a game is fully on-chain.
How to compare a play-to-own or play-to-earn game
Look beyond the label. Apply the same checks to both models before spending money or treating a digital item as an investment:
- Core game: Is it enjoyable without financial rewards?
- Entry cost: Must you buy tokens or items before playing? Could prices keep new players out?
- Asset rights and utility: What can you actually hold, use, transfer, or trade? Is the item useful only in this game?
- Market mechanics: Who supports trading, what fees or restrictions apply, and is there visible demand? Is cash-out supported?
- Economic design: How are rewards and item or token supply managed?
- Security and recourse: What options exist after a wallet compromise, scam, market failure, or shutdown?
- Governance: Who sets the rules—the studio, token holders, or software—and who can change them?
Has play-to-own actually replaced play-to-earn?
That conclusion is not established by the available evidence. The BGA’s 2024 report documents a conversation moving beyond P2E, while its current research page points to a 2025 survey of industry professionals without exposing detailed results. A professional survey is not the same as evidence that all players have adopted a new model, and no verified market-wide statistic here shows play-to-own dominating P2E.
The useful takeaway is narrower: game design is being discussed in terms of what players can hold and control, not only what they can earn. Whether that shift benefits players depends on the specific game’s rights, economy, market access, security, and continued support—not on the label.
