Umami is the practical default for a small site that needs pageviews and referrers with a relatively light stack. Plausible is the better fit when a polished dashboard, goals, custom events and deeper conversion reporting matter more than minimizing infrastructure. Both are privacy-focused analytics products that can be self-hosted, but they shift different amounts of software, database and maintenance work onto you.
What you are choosing
Plausible and Umami are alternatives to conventional, user-tracking analytics suites. Both are aimed at owners who want useful traffic reports without building profiles around visitors. A self-hosted deployment keeps the analytics database on infrastructure you control; a hosted plan lets a provider run that infrastructure for you.
Plausible describes itself as a simple, privacy-friendly alternative to Google Analytics. Its vendor says the product uses no cookies, collects no personal data and does not require consent banners for its normal operation. Those statements describe the product design, not a blanket exemption from every privacy or electronic-communications law. Your jurisdiction, site content and any other scripts still determine what notices or consent controls you need.
Umami is positioned in the comparative material as the lighter route for pageviews and referrers. The same comparison presents Plausible as the more conversion-oriented product, with goals and custom events and a broader paid feature path. Exact Umami licensing, release numbers, hardware sizing and full feature parity were not independently verified in the available material, so check the current Umami documentation before committing to a long-lived deployment.
At-a-glance comparison
| Decision area | Umami | Plausible |
|---|---|---|
| Best starting use case | Small sites, documentation portals and solo projects focused on pageviews and referrers. | Teams and product sites that want a minimal dashboard plus documented conversion reporting. |
| Self-hosted runtime reported in the comparison | Node.js 18.18 or newer with PostgreSQL 12.14 or newer. | Docker on an x86_64 server with SSE4.2 support; a domain or subdomain that you can manage through DNS is required. |
| Storage and data control | Data remains on the database and host you operate. | Community Edition also keeps data on your infrastructure; Cloud delegates storage and operations to Plausible. |
| Dashboard emphasis | Straightforward traffic reporting, especially pageviews and referrers, according to the comparative source. | Minimal dashboard with a documented path from goals and custom events to funnels, user journeys and revenue tracking on higher plans. |
| Maintenance | You maintain the application, database, backups, security and capacity when self-hosted. | The same responsibilities apply to Community Edition. Cloud includes managed infrastructure, backups, security and maintenance. |
| Release cadence | Verify the current Umami release and upgrade policy in its documentation. | Cloud receives updates multiple times per week; Community Edition follows a longer release schedule. |
| Hosted pricing example | A 2026 third-party comparison lists a flat $7-per-month self-hosted provider offer; it is not a universal Umami price. | The same type of comparison lists Plausible Cloud from $9 per month for 10,000 pageviews; treat this as a dated provider price, not a permanent rate. |
Infrastructure and self-hosting requirements
Plausible Community Edition
Plausible’s official documentation says, “Plausible Analytics is designed to be self-hosted via Docker.” The documented server requirement is x86_64 architecture with SSE4.2 support. You also need a domain or subdomain that you can point or edit through DNS. An ARM-only machine, even if it has enough CPU and memory, does not meet that documented architecture requirement unless you introduce a compatible layer and accept the resulting support risk.

Docker simplifies packaging, but it does not remove operations work. You remain responsible for the host operating system, container updates, TLS and reverse-proxy configuration, firewall rules, database persistence, backups, restore tests, monitoring and capacity planning. Community Edition is the free AGPL release; the license fee is zero, not the total cost of running it.
Umami
The comparative source reports Node.js 18.18 or newer and PostgreSQL 12.14 or newer for Umami. Those versions are the useful planning baseline from the available evidence, not a substitute for checking the current release’s installation notes. Confirm supported operating systems, package-manager requirements, database extensions, memory guidance and upgrade instructions before you provision production hardware.
Because Umami is characterized as the lighter infrastructure path, it can be attractive on a small virtual server or an existing PostgreSQL host. “Lighter” does not mean maintenance-free: database backups, application updates, TLS, access control, log retention and incident recovery remain your responsibilities when you self-host.
Hardware choice
For either product, an x86-64 mini PC or server with Docker support is a reasonable hardware category for a private deployment, provided it meets the documented software requirements and has reliable storage. If you use Plausible Community Edition, check SSE4.2 explicitly rather than assuming every x86-64 processor qualifies. For a public site, uninterrupted power, automated backups and remote administration usually matter more than buying the fastest CPU.

Reporting depth: traffic versus conversion analysis
Where Umami fits
Choose Umami when your questions are primarily operational: How many visits did a page receive? Which referrers sent traffic? Which content is growing or declining? The comparative material describes those pageview and referrer reports as Umami’s practical strength. That focus can keep the interface and event model easier to operate for a personal site or documentation project.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsDo not assume feature parity with every Plausible plan. The available evidence does not establish Umami’s current licensing, complete event taxonomy, revenue reporting, team controls or API surface. Verify each capability you need against the Umami version you intend to deploy.
Where Plausible fits
Plausible documents goals and custom events, then adds funnels, user journeys and revenue tracking on higher plans. Its plan documentation places custom properties, the Stats API and Data Studio in Business, while Enterprise adds SSO, a Sites API, a managed proxy and raw-data exports. This gives a product team a documented route from basic traffic measurement to conversion and reporting workflows without switching analytics systems.
That depth comes with configuration work. You must define meaningful goals, instrument the events that represent them, decide which properties are safe to collect, and test that reports match the actions users actually take. A polished dashboard cannot correct inconsistent event names or a conversion definition that changes halfway through a campaign.

Plausible plan path and what it changes
| Plan | Documented positioning | When it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Starter | One site for solo use. | A personal site or single project that needs managed hosting rather than self-operated infrastructure. |
| Growth | Multiple sites or team and client sharing. | Agencies, organizations or owners managing more than one property or sharing dashboards with collaborators. |
| Business | Funnels, user journeys, revenue tracking, custom properties, Stats API and Data Studio. | Product, marketing and reporting teams that need conversion analysis or data access beyond the standard dashboard. |
| Enterprise | SSO, Sites API, managed proxy and raw-data exports. | Organizations with centralized identity, integration or export requirements. |
All Plausible plans include a 30-day trial without a credit card according to the plan documentation. Limits and prices change, so confirm the current pageview allowance, retention, seats and feature entitlements before budgeting. Plausible documentation also states that more than 21,000 teams use the product; that is a vendor-reported figure, not an independent adoption study.
Hosted versus self-hosted cost
Compare the complete operating cost, not just the subscription line. Community Edition removes a software subscription but transfers installation, maintenance, upgrades, server capacity, uptime, backups, security, stability and consistency to the operator. A small server may be inexpensive in cash terms while consuming several hours during initial setup and future upgrades.
The available third-party comparison lists Plausible Cloud starting at $9 per month for 10,000 pageviews and an InstaPods Umami self-hosted offer at a flat $7 per month. These are provider-specific examples reported at the time of that comparison, not universal prices or guarantees. The Umami figure is for a hosting offer, not the cost of every self-hosted installation; your own virtual machine, storage and backup plan can cost more or less.
Model the break-even point
- Estimate monthly pageviews and how sharply they can rise during launches or news coverage.
- For a pageview-metered hosted plan, calculate the next tier rather than budgeting only for today’s traffic.
- For a fixed server, include storage, backups, monitoring, domain and administration time.
- Assign a realistic value to the hours required for patching, restores and troubleshooting.
- Include the cost of an outage: lost reporting, delayed decisions and the work needed to recover.
Predictable traffic and an existing server can make self-hosting economical. Unpredictable traffic or a team that does not want on-call infrastructure work often favors managed hosting, even when its list price is higher.

How to deploy Plausible Community Edition
- Validate the host. Confirm x86_64 architecture, SSE4.2 support, a supported Docker installation and enough persistent storage for the expected history and backups.
- Choose the hostname. Select a dedicated domain or subdomain and verify that you can create and edit its DNS records.
- Prepare operations first. Decide where database data will persist, how encrypted backups will run, who receives alerts and how you will restore the service on a replacement host.
- Deploy from the official Community Edition Docker instructions. Use the release’s documented configuration rather than copying an old compose file, because environment variables and upgrade steps can change.
- Put HTTPS in front of the service. Configure the reverse proxy and certificate, restrict administrative access, and confirm that the public hostname resolves correctly from outside your network.
- Add the site and tracking script. Publish the script on the pages you want to measure, then load a test page and confirm that a visit appears.
- Instrument conversions deliberately. Create goals or custom events only after naming the actions, parameters and ownership of each report. Test normal, repeat and failed journeys before relying on the data.
- Exercise an upgrade and restore. Perform a backup, upgrade in a staging or maintenance window, check reports and then verify that the documented restore procedure works.
How to deploy Umami
- Confirm the current release requirements. Start with Node.js 18.18 or newer and PostgreSQL 12.14 or newer, the versions reported in the comparison, then check Umami’s current documentation for any changes.
- Provision the database separately from disposable application storage. Use persistent volumes, restricted credentials and automated backups; test that a clean host can restore them.
- Install the application using the release’s supported method. Avoid relying on an old tutorial whose dependency versions no longer match the release you selected.
- Secure the public endpoint. Use a domain, HTTPS, firewall rules and an administrative account protected by a strong unique credential. Keep database access private.
- Register the website and publish the tracking script. Verify a pageview from a known test browser before announcing the deployment.
- Define the minimum event set. Start with pageviews and referrers, then add only the events that answer a business or editorial question. Confirm how the current release names, stores and exposes those events.
- Document upgrades. Record the application version, Node.js version, PostgreSQL version, backup location and rollback procedure so another administrator can operate the service.
Privacy and data ownership trade-offs
Self-hosting gives you control over the server region, database access, retention policy and backup location. That control is valuable when contractual or internal policy requires data to stay in a particular environment. It also makes you the party that must prevent unauthorized access, remove old backups, rotate credentials and respond to incidents.
Hosted Plausible reduces that operational burden by including managed infrastructure, backups, security and maintenance. The trade-off is dependence on the provider’s availability, plan limits, data location and export options. Enterprise features such as raw-data exports and a managed proxy may address some integration or governance requirements, but verify the exact terms for your plan and region.
Common failure modes and fixes
The Plausible host will not start
Check architecture first. An x86-64 label alone is not enough if the processor lacks SSE4.2. Then inspect Docker logs, persistent-volume permissions and available disk space. Do not delete the database volume while troubleshooting; that can turn a startup problem into data loss.
The hostname works internally but not publicly
Review the DNS record, certificate name, firewall and reverse-proxy forwarding. Test from a network that is not using the same local DNS cache. A correct container configuration cannot compensate for a hostname that resolves to the wrong address.

Umami reports a database or dependency error
Compare the running Node.js and PostgreSQL versions with the release’s requirements, including the minimums reported above. Check connection credentials, migrations and database reachability from the application host. Take a fresh backup before retrying a migration.
Pageviews appear but conversions do not
Open the browser’s network tools and confirm that the event request is sent after the intended action, not before a redirect or form submission cancels it. Check spelling and parameter names, test in a clean session, and confirm that the dashboard’s reporting window includes the test timestamp.
Costs or capacity rise unexpectedly
Look for traffic spikes, repeated monitoring requests, runaway event generation and oversized logs or backups. On hosted Plausible, compare actual pageviews with the next plan tier. On self-hosted systems, check disk growth, database size, CPU and memory before increasing the server; better retention and event hygiene may solve the problem more cheaply.
Which tool should you choose?
| Your priority | More suitable starting point | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Only pageviews, referrers and a small number of sites | Umami | The available comparison presents it as the lighter path for this reporting scope. |
| A highly polished, minimal dashboard | Plausible | Its product positioning emphasizes a simple interface and its hosted option avoids infrastructure work. |
| Goals, custom events and conversion funnels | Plausible | These capabilities are explicitly documented, with deeper options on higher plans. |
| Maximum control over storage and operating location | Either self-hosted edition | The decision depends on whether your team prefers Umami’s reported lighter stack or Plausible’s documented feature path. |
| No appetite for patching, backups or uptime work | Plausible Cloud | Managed infrastructure, backups, security and maintenance are included in Cloud rather than delegated to you. |
| SSO, raw exports or advanced Plausible integrations | Plausible Enterprise | Those capabilities are listed in the Enterprise plan documentation; verify current terms. |
| Unpredictable traffic | Whichever cost model you can forecast | Compare pageview-based hosted tiers with a fixed server bill plus the value of your maintenance time. |
Before selecting Umami for an advanced product-analytics workflow, verify that the current release supplies every required event, API, team and export capability. Before selecting Plausible Community Edition, make sure someone owns the Docker, database, backup and security duties. The right winner is the system whose reporting scope and operating obligations match your team, not the one with the lowest nominal price.
