To connect a Bluetooth Plantronics headset to a MacBook Pro, put the headset in pairing mode, connect it under Apple menu > System Settings > Bluetooth, then select it separately for sound output and microphone input under System Settings > Sound. The exact pairing control and whether you need a USB adapter depend on the headset model.

Connect a Bluetooth Plantronics headset to your MacBook Pro

  1. Put the headset in pairing mode. Use the pairing instructions for your exact headset model; controls differ among over-ear, on-ear and earbud models. Make sure it is powered on and discoverable.
  2. Open Bluetooth settings on the Mac. Choose Apple menu > System Settings > Bluetooth. When the headset appears in the device list, select it and follow any on-screen prompt to connect. Apple’s Mac Bluetooth connection guide also notes that the accessory needs to be on and discoverable.
  3. Choose the headset for listening. Go to Apple menu > System Settings > Sound > Output and select the headset.
  4. Choose it for the microphone. In System Settings > Sound > Input, select the headset. In a calling app, check its audio settings too; the app may have its own microphone selection.

Pairing establishes the connection, but it does not guarantee that macOS or a calling app will use the headset for both audio roles. Apple’s sound settings guide explains how to choose sound devices on a Mac.

Do you need a BT600 or BT700 USB adapter?

Not necessarily. If your headset supports Bluetooth, you can generally connect it directly using the steps above. Some Plantronics/Poly headsets are supplied with a USB Bluetooth adapter, and some model instructions specify using one. A BT600 or BT700 is not a universal requirement or a guaranteed match for every headset.

If you are using an included adapter, connect it to the Mac and check System Settings > Sound. Select the adapter under both Output and Input if you want it to handle listening and microphone audio. Poly’s BT700 quick-start guide describes selecting Poly BT700 for Mac sound input and output; its 2021 instructions use the older “System Preferences” label, while current macOS uses “System Settings.”

Before relying on or buying an adapter, verify the exact headset compatibility and whether the adapter uses USB-A or USB-C. The headset model and MacBook Pro year are not specified here, so no particular adapter, cable or wired connection can be assumed to fit. A wired USB or audio connection is an option only if the specific headset supports that mode and the cable matches the Mac’s ports.

Fix common connection and audio problems

The headset does not appear in Bluetooth

  • Confirm that it is powered on and in its model-specific pairing mode, not merely turned on.
  • Follow the headset’s own pairing instructions; the control varies by model.
  • If you are connecting through a USB adapter, confirm that the adapter and headset are designed to work together.

The Mac says it is connected, but sound comes from the MacBook

Open System Settings > Sound > Output and select the headset or the connected USB adapter. Bluetooth connection status alone does not select the output device.

Music sounds worse after a call or chat app opens

When an app uses a Bluetooth headset microphone, macOS switches Bluetooth into a mode that supports speaking and listening at the same time. That can reduce audio quality and volume. Apple documents this behavior in its Bluetooth headphone audio-quality support article, published April 23, 2025.

To return to listening-focused audio, quit apps that are using the headset microphone or choose the headphones again in Control Center > Sound. Apple also recommends checking that System Settings is not left open displaying the Sound settings.

A USB adapter no longer connects to the headset

Adapter re-pairing is model-dependent. HP/Poly support provides separate procedures: BT700 re-pairing uses the Poly Lens Desktop App, while BT600 has its own pairing-control procedure. Use the support guide for the exact adapter and headset rather than assuming the two adapters pair the same way.
