Plant data should live where each function can meet its response-time, connectivity, data-transfer, security, and retention needs. Keep immediate operational processing near the plant when a cloud round trip or interruption could disrupt work; send selected data to cloud services when delay is acceptable and centralized analytics, enterprise integration, or longer retention is useful. Many plants need both.

Use this five-question test for each plant function

Decide where a function runs—not where all plant data must go. A monitoring task, control-related decision, production-execution workflow, and reporting pipeline can have different requirements in the same facility.

  1. How quickly must it respond? If a network round trip would make the response too slow or disruptive, keep the decision or immediate processing local. AWS notes that some manufacturing execution system (MES) functions guiding work in progress have low latency tolerance and are better suited to on-premises execution. AWS Prescriptive Guidance: Industrial edge computing.
  2. Must it keep working through cloud interruptions? If the operation cannot pause when connectivity is intermittent, preserve the necessary processing and data path at the plant. Cloud-dependent work that can queue or resume later may be placed farther away.
  3. How much data needs to leave the plant? If sending every raw reading is unnecessary, select, filter, or aggregate data near its source. This can reduce upstream traffic, while retaining or transmitting the data needed for later analysis. AWS lists bandwidth optimization as an industrial edge consideration. AWS: Industrial IoT Architecture Patterns.
  4. Would centralized compute, integration, or retention help? Less time-sensitive reporting and analytics may benefit from cloud resources. AWS gives product lifecycle management (PLM) updates, enterprise resource planning (ERP) confirmations, data-lake reporting, and analytics as cloud-suited examples.
  5. What do security, regulation, and operations allow? Map permitted data flows, plant network boundaries, device capabilities, and governance requirements before choosing a location. Neither “local” nor “cloud” automatically means safer; edge devices, gateways, connectivity, and cloud services all need appropriate controls.

This is a qualitative test, not a published scoring formula. The cited guidance does not establish a universal millisecond limit, bandwidth threshold, or share of data that belongs at the edge. Set requirements against the actual process and its consequences for delay or disconnection.

What typically stays local—and what can go to cloud

A useful starting point is to separate immediate execution from work that can tolerate delay. The examples below are placement tendencies, not rules that apply to every plant or implementation.

Decision factor Edge or on-premises tends to fit when… Cloud tends to fit when…
Response time A function needs a fast local response or has low latency tolerance. The task can tolerate network delay.
Connectivity Operations must continue during intermittent cloud connectivity. The function can wait, queue, or tolerate delayed transfer.
Data transfer Local selection or processing avoids sending unnecessary data. Central combination or analysis is valuable and data transfer is acceptable.
Compute and retention A bounded local workload is sufficient. The workload benefits from pooled compute, analytics, or extended storage.
Integration The function must interact directly with plant operational technology (OT). The function updates enterprise systems such as PLM or ERP, or supports shared reporting.
Security and governance Plant-side handling is required by local controls or constraints. Approved centralized services meet the organization’s access and data controls.

A practical hybrid design can keep monitoring or operational decisions local while sending selected information to cloud for fleet-wide analysis or longer-term retention. What an industrial edge gateway does—and does not do

An industrial edge gateway is an intermediary processing and integration node between plant OT systems and cloud services. Depending on the implementation, it can collect data, perform local processing, and support the connection between older OT equipment and downstream systems. AWS describes gateways as one way to bridge OT systems that may not support authentication, authorization, or encryption themselves.

Brother PT-E720BT Industrial Label Printer Bluetooth
  • Made for the Industrial Pro: Works with the Pro Label Tool app1 for professional industrial label designs
  • Hands-Free Printing: Attach to belt, ladder, or rack with optional accessories3—ideal for tight spaces on the jobsite.
  • Database Accuracy: Use existing databases2 to print industrial labels, barcodes and QR codes quickly while reducing errors.
  • Durable Labels: Laminated labels up to ~1 inch wide withstand industrial environments.
  • PC Connectivity: Use micro-USB to charge the Li-ion battery or connect to a PC to design and print from P-touch Editor4.

A gateway does not, by itself, decide which workloads belong locally, make an architecture secure, or guarantee that cloud connectivity is safe. Choose and configure it around the plant’s protocols, environmental conditions, compute and storage needs, data flows, and operating requirements. AWS’s architecture guidance describes the gateway category, not a tested recommendation for a specific model. AWS: Industrial IoT Architecture Patterns.

Security must cover both sides of the connection

Hybrid placement creates responsibilities across the plant boundary. AWS guidance calls for protecting edge networks and devices, securing connectivity, managing software updates, and using logging, monitoring, and auditing. It also discusses secure communication and industrial protocols alongside network segmentation. AWS Prescriptive Guidance: Providing secure edge computing and connectivity.

AWS’s manufacturing OT guidance treats cloud connectivity as part of a hybrid architecture that must account for OT security. AWS: Security Best Practices for Manufacturing OT. Microsoft’s OPC UA reference solution also warns that some example defaults favor ease of deployment over hardening and need to be addressed before production; treat it as an architecture example, not a production security prescription. Make the placement decision operational

  1. List functions separately. Identify the decision, processing, or data service under consideration rather than assigning an entire plant system to one location.
  2. Record consequences and requirements. Specify the acceptable response time, what happens during an outage, which data must be available locally, and what should be retained or shared.
  3. Choose the smallest workable local role. Keep the functions that need immediate response, offline continuity, or local data reduction near the plant; route appropriate selected data to cloud.
  4. Verify security and integration. Confirm supported protocols, device capabilities, network segmentation, access controls, updates, logging, and permitted data flows.
  5. Test the failure case. Check what the process does when connectivity is interrupted and how queued or locally retained data is handled when service returns.

AWS’s industrial edge guidance describes the core trade-off directly: “Some microservices or functionalities within MES require low latency and cannot tolerate intermittent connectivity to the cloud.” The statement is from AWS Prescriptive Guidance; no individual speaker is identified.
