Planet Zoo 2 is the better purchase for most new players. Released on 13 October 2026 for PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, it adds fully aquatic and flying animals, customisable aquariums and aviaries, Wildlife Reserves, and a new mood-driven presentation system. The original Planet Zoo is still the better value if you already own it, want its mature DLC library, or find it substantially discounted.
This comparison explains the practical differences, launch editions, platform choices and upgrade questions so you can decide without assuming that the sequel automatically replaces the original.

Flying and fully aquatic animals
The most visible expansion is biological rather than cosmetic. Planet Zoo 2 introduces flying species and fully aquatic species for the first time in the series. That changes exhibit planning: vertical space, flight paths, water volume, viewing angles and visitor sightlines become part of habitat design instead of optional decoration.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The launch announcement says the game includes more than 130 animals. That figure describes the launch roster; it should not be read as a promise about future additions or as a direct count of every animal available in the original with all of its downloadable content.
Customisable aquariums
Aquariums are buildable exhibits rather than a simple display window. You can customise their structure and presentation while managing aquatic animals as part of the zoo. For players who wanted a mixed land-and-water park, this is a fundamental new design category, not merely a graphical update.
Customisable aviaries
Aviaries give flying animals dedicated spaces that must be integrated into the park layout. Their presence makes rooflines, enclosure height and viewing positions relevant to the same construction system used for other habitats.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Wildlife Reserves
Wildlife Reserves extend conservation beyond the conventional zoo. Animals can be released into expansive, customisable reserve spaces, giving conservation activities a second setting and a different planning problem from a compact visitor park. If reserve management is the feature that attracts you, the original cannot provide an equivalent sequel system.

A living, mood-responsive presentation system
Frontier describes a “huge generational leap in fidelity” and a living UI in which animals behave differently according to their current mood. Game Director Gareth Hughes explains: “Planet Zoo 2 features a living UI system with animals behaving differently depending on their current mood.” The practical implication is that animal status is presented through changing behaviour and presentation, rather than only through static management panels.
What remains familiar
The sequel keeps the series’ central loop: construct habitats piece by piece, shape terrain, care for animals, meet conservation goals and operate a functioning park. Career, Franchise and Sandbox play remain part of that foundation. Players who enjoyed detailed building and animal-care management should recognise the design philosophy even while learning the new habitat types.
The original offers four named modes: Sandbox, Career, Challenge and online Franchise. Its long support history also means a large catalogue of additional animals, scenery and themed content through downloadable content. That breadth is a major reason to keep playing it, especially if you already own packs that fit your preferred zoo style.

The Deluxe Edition’s confirmed additions are six animal species and exclusive signs. The available information does not establish any performance advantage, extra gameplay mode or future-content guarantee for Deluxe, so choose it for those listed extras rather than an assumed technical benefit.

Should you buy Planet Zoo 2 if you already own Planet Zoo?
Buy the sequel now if these features are your priority
- You want flying or fully aquatic animals.
- You specifically want customisable aquariums or aviaries.
- Wildlife Reserves are more appealing than adding another conventional zoo.
- You want the current release on PC, PS5 or Xbox Series X|S rather than continuing with the older game.
- You prefer the sequel’s newer animal presentation and mood-dependent behaviour.
Keep the original if these describe you
- You already have a substantial DLC collection and are satisfied with land-based zoo building.
- You prefer a mature game with years of updates and established systems.
- You do not need aquariums, aviaries or Wildlife Reserves.
- You can buy the original at a considerably lower sale price.
- You are comfortable with a complex management simulation and do not need the sequel’s revised presentation.
Owning the original does not, by itself, make the sequel a poor purchase. The deciding question is whether the new habitat classes and reserve system change the kind of zoo you want to build. Conversely, a new release is not automatically better value when your preferred content is already covered by the original and its DLC.
Which game should you buy on PS5 or Xbox Series X|S?
For a first console purchase
Choose Planet Zoo 2 if you want the current series entry and its expanded animal scope. It launched on both PS5 and Xbox Series X|S on 13 October 2026. The official Xbox listing confirms the Xbox Series X|S edition and that release date.
Choose the original when its sale price is the deciding factor, you want its established DLC selection, or you are happy with its existing habitat types. Both games are available on the current-generation consoles named above, so the decision is about content and maturity rather than choosing between a current and an obsolete console version.
For an existing console owner
Keep playing Planet Zoo if your current parks, DLC and preferred modes already meet your needs. Consider Planet Zoo 2 when you are ready to start a new park around aquatic exhibits, aviaries or reserves. No verified save-transfer policy has been established, so do not purchase on the assumption that an existing park will migrate automatically.

Which game should you buy on PC?
On PC, the choice is mainly between a mature, content-rich simulation and a newer release with broader habitat design. The original launched on 5 November 2019 and has accumulated years of updates and DLC. The sequel’s Standard Edition has the lower launch price of the two new-game editions, while Deluxe costs more for six extra species and exclusive signs.
There is no independent benchmark or review-score synthesis available here to establish a universal performance winner. Check the current store page and your system requirements before buying, and avoid treating the sequel’s “generational leap in fidelity” as a measured frame-rate claim.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How the management experience differs
Building and layout
Both games use piece-by-piece construction and terrain tools. In Planet Zoo 2, aquariums and aviaries add new spatial constraints: you must plan for water-filled viewing structures and enclosed flight areas alongside ordinary paths, habitats and staff infrastructure.

Animal care and behaviour
The original is known for realistic animal portrayals and detailed care systems, but its complexity can challenge newcomers. The sequel retains animal care while making mood more visible through its living UI and changing behaviour. That may make animal states easier to interpret, although it does not remove the underlying management decisions.

Conservation
The original centres conservation within the zoo and its established modes. The sequel adds Wildlife Reserves, allowing release into large customisable spaces. This makes conservation a spatial activity outside the visitor-focused park, not just a target shown in a management screen.
Common buying pitfalls
- Assuming the sequel includes every original DLC item: the available launch information confirms the sequel’s own roster and Deluxe extras, not automatic ownership of the original’s downloadable content.
- Confusing launch roster size with total series content: “over 130 animals” refers to Planet Zoo 2 at launch, while the original’s total depends on its base game, updates and DLC.
- Expecting a guaranteed performance improvement: no independent benchmark establishes frame-rate or loading gains.
- Assuming cross-save support: no verified save-transfer policy is established.
- Buying Deluxe for features it does not list: its confirmed benefits are six extra species and exclusive signs.
- Ignoring platform and region: prices are quoted in pounds, US dollars and euros as suggested retail prices; your store may show a different currency, tax-inclusive total or sale price.
A practical decision checklist
- Mark whether flying animals, aquatic animals, aquariums, aviaries or Wildlife Reserves are essential to your ideal park.
- Check whether you already own Planet Zoo and how much of its DLC library you actively use.
- Compare the live regional prices for Standard, Deluxe and the original before checkout.
- Confirm that you are buying the correct platform edition: PC, PS5 or Xbox Series X|S.
- If choosing Deluxe, verify that six additional species and exclusive signs justify the price difference for you.
- Do not factor in unverified assumptions about save transfers, physical stock, commissions or performance.
Verdict
Buy Planet Zoo 2 for the newest systems and the widest range of habitat concepts, particularly if aquariums, aviaries or Wildlife Reserves are central to your plan. Buy or keep Planet Zoo when its mature DLC ecosystem, established modes and discounted pricing matter more than those additions. For an existing owner, the sequel is an expansion of possibilities rather than a compulsory replacement.
