Planet Zoo 2 is scheduled to launch on 13 October 2026 for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. Frontier Developments says the sequel will add customisable aquariums and aviaries, aquatic and flying animals, and conservation projects in Wildlife Reserves. Those are developer-announced features; the reviewed US PlayStation Store page still showed a preorder on the scheduled launch date, so check your local platform store for current availability and terms.
When does Planet Zoo 2 come out, and what platforms is it on?
Frontier announced Planet Zoo 2 on 28 May 2026 and scheduled its release for 13 October 2026 on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. The scheduled date does not confirm that the game is available in every region or on every platform: the reviewed US PlayStation Store listing was still a preorder page on 13 October. Check the store for your country and preferred platform for current availability. Frontier’s announcement and FY26 results announcement give the release schedule.
What’s new in Planet Zoo 2?
The sequel’s headline additions are habitats for aquatic and flying species, plus conservation play that reaches beyond a zoo. Frontier also describes changes to animal behaviour, habitat dynamics, and management. These are the studio’s feature descriptions, not independently tested assessments of the finished game.
Custom aquariums and aviaries
Frontier says players can build customisable aquariums and aviaries, bringing fully aquatic and flying animals into the franchise. In its trailer walkthrough, game director Gareth Hughes also describes water that reacts dynamically to animals. The studio’s July 21 aquatics feature post specifically mentions Blacktip reef sharks and Red lionfish. These examples do not constitute a complete final species roster.

Wildlife Reserves and conservation projects
Players will be able to take on global conservation projects, restore natural habitats, and release zoo animals into Wildlife Reserves. Frontier presents this as an extension of conservation gameplay beyond the managed zoo, alongside what it calls “customisable wildlife reserves and cosy creativity at its core.” The June gameplay coverage on the official Planet Zoo Steam news feed shows the studio presenting zoo management alongside reserve restoration.
Animal behaviour and management
Frontier says animals will show more expressive behaviour, with a “living UI” that communicates mood through their presentation and actions. The studio also says cohabitation will play a larger role in management. Hughes told GamesRadar+ on 8 June 2026 that the aim is to make events understandable: “Something is happening, I understand what’s happening, and I understand why it’s happening, and I understand what I need to do to fix it.”

How do animal welfare, habitats, and zoo management fit together?
Frontier describes a management loop linking species’ needs, habitat design, animal welfare, visitor experience, zoo ratings, and income. The studio says habitats should reflect natural environments and let animals interact authentically; well-designed habitats are also intended to support welfare and guest experience, helping generate income to expand the zoo. Treat that as the developer’s account of the intended simulation, not a verified formula for how ratings or revenue will work in play.

Management also includes staff morale and training. In Frontier’s walkthrough, Hughes says the game should make animal moods and management events legible while retaining depth. The July 8 animal feature post on the official Planet Zoo Steam news feed discusses lion behaviour and welfare. Together, the developer materials point to a game where habitat choices and animal needs are intended to matter alongside visitor-facing design and staff management.

What animals are in Planet Zoo 2?
The available developer announcements establish that the game includes terrestrial, aquatic, and flying animals, but they do not provide a complete final species roster. Frontier’s July feature posts name Blacktip reef sharks and Red lionfish in its aquatics coverage and discuss lion behaviour in its animal feature. The Deluxe Upgrade Pack adds six animal species, but Frontier’s announcement does not name them in the details summarized here. Do not treat these examples as a full list of launch animals.
In the Xbox Wire walkthrough, Hughes says an Ocean Sunfish can weigh “up to 2000kg.” That is an attributed detail from the developer’s 28 May 2026 article, not an independently verified game statistic.
