Planet Zoo 2 is a compelling but risky launch-day purchase. Critics praise its expressive animals, aquatic habitats, flying birds and conservation systems, while early Steam reviews report crashes, broken Franchise play, rendering failures and erratic animal behavior. Buy now if those new systems matter more to you than launch stability; otherwise, waiting for patches is the safer choice.
What Planet Zoo 2 adds
Frontier Developments released Planet Zoo 2 on Steam on 13 October 2026. It is a zoo-management simulation with Career, Franchise and Sandbox modes. The sequel’s defining additions are fully aquatic species, flying birds, customizable aquariums and aviaries, and wildlife reserves.
- Aquatic species: Fish and other water-based animals expand habitat design beyond land enclosures.
- Flying birds: Aviaries introduce vertical space and airborne animal behavior.
- Wildlife reserves: Conservation-focused areas provide a different creative setting from a conventional zoo.
- Established modes: Career, Franchise and Sandbox remain the main ways to play.
Why critics like the animals
PC Gamer describes the animals as “truly majestic creations,” highlighting how they climb, prowl, swim and fly. The review treats fish, birds and nature reserves as the sequel’s major advances and finds the conservation theme appealing. Watching the animals behave is the strongest argument for playing immediately: the visual detail and animation create the soothing, observational experience the series is known for.

PC Gamer says reserves can feel more like a terrain editor than a fully realized game mode, and calls some Career objectives mundane. The review also identifies a broader design problem: menus are tangled, creation tools can be fiddly, and the number of habitat variables can make construction feel like administrative work. Its central criticism is captured by reviewer Chris Livingston’s line: “I want creation that feels like play rather than work.”

Why Steam reviews are much harsher
Early negative Steam reviews, posted on launch day, focus less on animal design and more on whether the systems work reliably. These are individual player reports rather than controlled performance tests, but the complaints cover several separate parts of the game.

Those comments explain the critic-player gap: critics can recognize the ambition and observe the animals, while players must repeatedly use menus, construct habitats and maintain a long-running save.

PC requirements and what they imply
Frontier’s support guidance, published 14 October 2026, lists the following Windows PC requirements. The recommended tier is substantially stronger than the minimum, so meeting only the minimum should not be treated as a guarantee of smooth performance in large zoos.

Frontier’s published troubleshooting steps are to verify the game files in Steam and update, or clean-reinstall, the graphics driver. Those steps may address installation or driver-related failures, but they cannot fix bugs in Franchise logic, animal pathing or habitat behavior that are embedded in the game.

Base game or Deluxe Edition?
Steam lists regional prices of €49.99 for the base game and €64.99 for Deluxe; prices can change by country and over time. Deluxe adds six animal species and exclusive signs. Steam also lists separate downloadable content, including the Deluxe Upgrade Pack, Bonus Content Pack and soundtrack.

The Deluxe content improves the collection of animals and decorative options, but it does not address the reported technical problems. If you are undecided because of stability, paying more for Deluxe does not remove that uncertainty.

Should you buy at launch?
Buy now if
- You mainly want to watch and design habitats for aquatic animals and birds.
- You are comfortable troubleshooting a new PC release.
- You plan to spend time in Sandbox and can tolerate occasional workarounds.
- Your computer is closer to the recommended specification than the minimum.
Wait for a patch if
- Franchise is your primary mode.
- You need dependable saves, stable performance or crash-free long sessions.
- You find menu friction and fiddly construction tools especially frustrating.
- Your PC only meets the minimum requirements and has little performance headroom.
A practical launch-day checklist
- Compare your PC with Frontier’s minimum and recommended specifications, including DirectX 12 support and 40 GB of free storage.
- Update your graphics driver; if problems continue, perform a clean driver installation.
- In Steam, open the game’s Properties, choose Installed Files, and select Verify integrity of game files.
- Test a small Sandbox zoo before investing in a major Franchise save, so you can identify crashes or habitat problems early.
- Record the mode, animal, habitat and action that triggered a fault when reporting a bug; this makes recurring problems easier to distinguish from hardware-specific issues.
The launch verdict
Planet Zoo 2 succeeds where a sequel most visibly needs to: its animals are detailed, expressive and expanded into water and air. It is less convincing as a finished management tool at launch. The combination of interface friction and widespread player reports about crashes, Franchise failures, clipping and performance makes waiting a rational choice, especially for management-focused players. Animal enthusiasts willing to accept rough edges can still find a remarkable creative sandbox today.
