Before shopping for a dream PC, decide what it needs to do, how much you can spend, where it will sit, and which upgrades you may want later. Those choices determine which parts make sense—and whether they can physically and electrically work together. There is no one build that fits every budget or workload, so start with requirements, then verify each exact model against its manufacturer’s specifications and manual.

Define the job and the budget first

Write down the main workload: gaming, general use, content creation, or something else. A parts list that suits one task may spend too much—or fall short—for another. For gaming, include the games you play, your monitor resolution, and the frame rate you want; check each game’s recommended system requirements before selecting components. Intel’s gaming PC build guide also recommends setting a budget and making a compatible parts list before purchasing.

Set a total spending limit before comparing parts. Leave room in that plan for the complete system rather than treating the processor or graphics card as the whole budget. Compare candidate builds by the performance they offer for your workload and total price, not by a component’s name or headline specification alone.

Choose where the PC will live—and the case that fits

Measure the intended space and decide how much room the computer can occupy. Check the case’s actual external dimensions and internal clearances; labels such as “mid-tower” describe broad categories, not a guaranteed size. The case must accommodate the motherboard, graphics card, CPU cooler, fans or radiator, drives, and any expansion you have planned. Intel’s case guidance and MSI’s compatibility guide both emphasize checking dimensions rather than relying on a category label.

  • Dell Optiplex 3050 SFF Desktop computer PC, Intel Quad Core i5-6500 up to 3.6GHz, 16GB DDR4, 256GB SSD
  • Includes: USB Keyboard & Mouse, USB WiFi adapter, Microsoft office 30 days free trail.
  • Port: Front: USB 3.0(2), USB 2.0(2); Rear: DP, HDMI, USB 3.0(2), USB 2.0(2), RJ-45.
  • Support 4K (3840x2160) Dual display, makes it easy to connect two monitors at the same time, and you can expand working Windows, mirror content, or expand a single window across multiple monitors.

Choosing the case early helps turn vague preferences about size and appearance into concrete limits for the rest of the parts list. A compact case can suit a tight space, but it calls for closer checks of component fit and cooling and may leave less room for later expansion.

Check the parts against one another

Compatibility is specific to the exact models and revisions you plan to buy. Use a compatibility checker to catch potential conflicts, then resolve its warnings by consulting the manufacturer’s product specifications and manuals. A checker is a planning aid, not a guarantee of fit or support.

Processor, motherboard, and memory

  • Processor and motherboard: Confirm the processor’s socket matches the motherboard and that the board’s chipset and specifications support that exact CPU. Check any model-specific support notes in the motherboard documentation.
  • Motherboard and case: Confirm the case supports the board’s form factor. Check the board’s expansion slots and features against the components and connections you need.
  • Memory: Verify the motherboard supports the memory generation and configuration you intend to use. Do not assume that memory with a familiar-looking module will work just because it physically fits.

Graphics card, cooler, and case

  • Graphics card: Match the card to the workload and display needs, then check its exact length, thickness or slot use, power requirements, and connectors. Make sure it fits the case and works with the motherboard and power supply.
  • CPU cooler and cooling layout: Confirm the cooler supports the CPU socket and fits within the case’s cooler-height limit. For a fan or radiator setup, check the case’s supported mounting positions and clearances against the intended arrangement.
  • Airflow: Ensure the case supports the cooling hardware you plan to install. Check the manufacturer’s layout guidance so fans or radiators do not conflict with other components.

Power supply, storage, and connections

  • Power supply: Check the selected components’ power needs against the PSU’s rated capacity, and verify it has the required connectors. Choose for the complete system and its planned upgrades; no single wattage suits every build.
  • Storage: Confirm the motherboard has the right slots and connectors for the drives you plan to use.
  • Ports and headers: Check that the motherboard provides the internal headers needed for the case’s front-panel ports and other planned connections.

Prepare your workspace before assembly

Set up a clean work area with enough room to lay out components and consult manuals. Use a static-safe workspace and handle parts carefully. Intel’s assembly guide lists a Phillips #2 screwdriver for motherboard and GPU installation; a basic screwdriver is a useful preparation item.

Make one final compatibility pass

  1. Write down the exact make and model of every component, including the case, cooler, PSU, and memory.
  2. Enter the complete list into a compatibility checker and review every warning rather than treating an all-clear as proof.
  3. Verify CPU support, memory compatibility, board and case form factors, GPU dimensions, cooler clearance, PSU capacity and connectors, and storage and front-panel connections in the manufacturers’ specifications and manuals.
  4. Resolve any mismatch before ordering. If a specification is unclear, check the manufacturer’s documentation for the exact model instead of assuming it will fit or work.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will these PC parts work together?

They will work together only if the exact models are compatible in socket and chipset support, memory, physical clearances, power and connectors, and required storage and case connections. Check a compatibility tool, then confirm the results in the manufacturers’ specifications and manuals.

How do I check if parts go together?

Build a list of exact component models, run it through a compatibility checker, and verify each warning and key fit or support requirement against the relevant manufacturer documentation. A checker helps identify issues but does not replace those model-specific checks.
