Plan power routing and grounding after component placement and before ordinary signal routing. That is the point to estimate whether the board needs two, four, or more layers and to choose a stack-up that gives sensitive signals continuous reference and return paths. Four layers can be a sensible starting point for many designs, but no layer count by itself guarantees an EMI compliance pass.

Why power routing belongs early

Power and ground traces or planes take up board area, and their needs affect how many layers the design requires. James Niemann’s Analog Devices guidance published June 23, 2026 recommends planning this system immediately after placement, before routing the remaining signals. As Niemann puts it, “The sooner the correct layer count and stack-up is determined, the better.”

Starting with power also exposes conflicts while they are still relatively easy to resolve: a high-current path may need a wider route, a high-voltage net may need separation, and a sensitive signal may need a nearby, uninterrupted reference. If these demands are left until late routing, the board may need a larger outline, another layer, or a revised placement.

What determines the layer count?

There is no universal layer-count rule for EMI. Choose layers based on the board’s physical and electrical constraints, rather than treating a particular count as a compliance shortcut.

  • Easy to Use: 4 mounting holes at the corners of the PCB boards are convenient for installing them together
  • Compact Packing: Space-saving bag packaging, take little footprint
  • High Quality: Our PCB board made of durable glass fiber FR-4 material with 1.6 mm thickness
  • Wide Applications: Suitable for analog circuits and discrete circuits, DIY electronics projects and various DIP type components
  • Board area and routing density: Small outlines and many nets leave less room for wide power routes and adequate spacing.
  • Current and voltage: High-current paths may need more copper width, while high-voltage circuits and isolation boundaries may require spacing that limits routing options.
  • Power rails: A board with several supplies has more distribution demands than one with a single rail.
  • Signal references and return paths: High-speed and sensitive signals need a suitable, continuous return path; adding layers can make it easier to place a reference plane close to a signal layer.
  • Decoupling: Supply delivery and local bypassing must be planned alongside the ICs they serve. Plane capacitance and decoupling needs vary with the circuit.
  • Cost and fabrication: More layers can ease routing and improve reference-plane options, but add manufacturing cost and stack-up constraints.

Two layers or four and more?

A two-layer board can work when the design’s rails, net count, current capacity, spacing, and signal requirements fit. A common arrangement puts power routes mainly on the top and ground on the bottom, with ground routed beneath or alongside signals where possible. Multiple rails and limited plane capacitance make this approach harder, and signal routes can interrupt the return path if the ground arrangement is not carefully maintained.

Four layers are often a useful starting point when the board has demanding signal or power-routing needs, because the additional layers can provide more room for routing and references. They are not a blanket requirement or a pass guarantee. Analog Devices’ AN-0971 recommends four layers for the techniques it evaluates with isoPower devices; its recommendation is specific to that application. In a separate circuit example, CN0350 says four layers would improve EMS for its design. Neither establishes a rule for unrelated products.

ELEGOO 32Pcs Double Sided PCB Board Prototype Kit for DIY Soldering
  • 32 Boards In Five Sizes: Choose 4 × 6 cm, 3 × 7 cm, 5 × 7 cm, 2 × 8 cm or 7 × 9 cm boards for compact circuits, controller interfaces, classroom soldering exercises and larger point-to-point builds
  • Double-Sided FR4 For Soldered Prototypes: Approximately 1.6 mm FR4 provides a rigid base for permanent electronics builds, while pre-tinned plated-through holes provide solderable connections accessible from both sides
  • Standard 2.54 mm Grid Fits Common Through-Hole Parts: Lay out resistors, LEDs, DIP sockets, pin headers, terminal blocks, sensors and jumper wires on a 0.1 in pitch, then create each required connection with soldered leads, bridges or insulated wire
  • From Breadboard Test To Permanent Build: Transfer a proven circuit into a compact soldered assembly for sensor nodes, controllers, alarms and STEM demonstrations; corner mounting holes help secure finished boards in enclosures or on panels
  • Set Expectations Before Soldering: These are isolated-pad perfboards with no breadboard-style buses or stripboard traces, and the kit does not include components, wire, solder or tools; plan the layout and check continuity before applying power

Stack-ups can also vary by region within a board. AN-2556 describes a specific EMC board with a four-layer system-side region and a pseudo two-layer field-side region. That example illustrates a design choice for its circuit, not a general recipe.

A practical planning sequence

  1. Finish placement and identify demanding circuits. Mark sensitive analog inputs, high-speed interfaces, switching or isolated sections, high-current loads, and high-voltage nets.
  2. Map power and ground. Identify each rail, its loads, likely route widths, grounding needs, and any voltage or isolation spacing constraints. Include decoupling locations in the plan.
  3. Estimate routing space. Consider the board outline, number of nets and rails, required spacing, and whether the power and ground system leaves enough room for signals.
  4. Select a layer count and stack-up. Decide where signal, power, and ground layers belong so critical signals can use appropriate references. Check that the intended stack-up supports continuous return paths rather than merely adding copper layers.
  5. Route critical signals with their return paths in mind. Keep sensitive analog and high-speed paths near suitable references, avoid forcing return current around splits or gaps, and provide the supply delivery and local decoupling those circuits need.
  6. Route the remaining nets and review transitions. Check vias, layer changes, reference-plane continuity, and any route that crosses a change in its return path before treating the layout as complete.

Use routing directions as guidance, not a substitute for EMC design

Signal and power routing choices depend on the circuit, the stack-up, and the intended current paths. A frequently used impedance such as 50 Ω is not a universal requirement for every signal; follow the interface and component requirements for the actual design. The goal is a controlled signal path with a suitable return path, not a routing slogan applied indiscriminately.

Application notes provide useful layout examples, but they do not determine whether a different product will pass a particular test. Required EMC methods and limits depend on the product and market. A suitable stack-up supports good design practice; compliance still has to be assessed against the requirements that apply to the finished equipment.
