For most people, there is no plague vaccine to obtain. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says, “A plague vaccine is no longer available in the United States.” The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends vaccination only for selected high-risk groups, such as laboratory personnel with continual exposure risk and some health-care workers. Ordinary residents and travelers should not assume a travel clinic can provide a plague shot.
Effectiveness also cannot be reduced to one reliable percentage. Historical field observations suggest some reduction in illness after infected-flea bites, but protection against primary pneumonic plague was uncertain. Modern guidance says older vaccines did not demonstrate sufficient efficacy for pneumonic plague, while newer candidates remain in development or experimental use.

Who can get a plague vaccine?
People in the United States
There is no routinely marketed plague vaccine for U.S. consumers. A primary-care office, pharmacy or ordinary travel clinic therefore cannot be expected to stock one. CDC also says candidate vaccines are in development, but commercial availability is not expected in the immediate future. That status is different from saying that research has stopped: products may still be studied under clinical or other regulated arrangements.
If a clinician believes a person faces an exceptional occupational hazard, the discussion belongs with the employer’s occupational-health service, an infectious-disease specialist and public-health authorities. They can determine whether an investigational or special-access pathway exists. Do not treat an internet listing or an old vaccination record as proof that a currently usable product is available.

Laboratory personnel
Laboratory workers who handle Yersinia pestis or materials that could contain it are the clearest example of a group for which vaccination may be considered. The relevant risk is continual contamination exposure, not merely working in a city or country where plague has occurred. Eligibility depends on the tasks, containment controls, institutional risk assessment and the rules of the country where the work is performed.
Health-care workers
WHO lists health-care workers among possible high-risk groups. That does not mean every clinician, nurse or ambulance worker should be vaccinated. The decision depends on likely contact with infectious patients or respiratory material, the local epidemiology, available protective equipment and national policy. Workers should use their occupational-health program rather than seek a consumer travel product.
Field and animal-exposure occupations
Older CDC guidance discussed selective vaccination for certain field and occupational groups. Examples can include work that brings people into repeated contact with wild rodents, sick animals, carcasses or heavily flea-infested environments. A job title alone is not enough to establish eligibility. Employers and public-health specialists assess the frequency and type of exposure and whether practical controls can reduce it.

Living in an enzootic area, where plague circulates among animal and flea populations, does not automatically qualify someone for vaccination. Older CDC guidance considered routine vaccination unnecessary for people living in such areas and not indicated for most travelers, especially urban travelers. Current recommendations can differ by country and can change as vaccine candidates and local outbreaks evolve.

Is there a plague vaccine for travelers?
For ordinary international or domestic travel, the answer is generally no. Plague vaccination has not been a routine travel requirement, and older CDC advice specifically found it unnecessary for most travelers. A trip to a rural area with rodents or fleas is not the same as the continuous exposure experienced by a laboratory worker.
Travel-health advice should be destination-specific. Before departure, ask a qualified travel-health clinician or the destination’s public-health authority:
- Whether plague activity has been reported in the exact region and season of travel.
- Whether your itinerary involves caves, wildlife handling, animal rescue, veterinary work, field research or rural camps.
- Which flea, rodent and animal-contact precautions are recommended locally.
- What medical facility to use if fever, a painful swollen lymph node or breathing symptoms develop.
A clinic may be able to provide prevention counseling and routine travel vaccines for other diseases, but that does not imply it can provide a plague vaccine. If a country authorizes a product that is unavailable in the United States, its indication, schedule and eligibility still have to be confirmed with that country’s regulator; availability should never be inferred from historical references.

Why there is no single plague-vaccine effectiveness percentage
Historical measurements were imprecise
Older CDC guidance says plague-vaccine effectiveness “has never been measured precisely.” Field experience suggested lower incidence and less severe illness after infected-flea bites in some settings, but those observations were not the same as a controlled, modern efficacy estimate. Differences in exposure, diagnosis, previous immunity and access to treatment make historical comparisons difficult.

Bubonic and pneumonic plague are different targets
WHO’s evaluation emphasizes that efficacy against bubonic and pneumonic plague may differ. Bubonic plague usually follows an infected-flea bite and affects lymph nodes. Pneumonic plague involves the lungs and can result from inhaling infectious respiratory particles or from spread within the body. A result for one form cannot automatically be applied to the other.
Protection against primary pneumonic disease was uncertain
Older CDC material described protection against primary pneumonic infection as unknown. The CDC’s 2021 guideline states that previously available vaccines had not demonstrated sufficient efficacy for pneumonic plague and notes that newer formulations were in development or experimental use. Consequently, a claim that a vaccine is “effective against plague” without naming the disease form, study design and product would be misleading.
No established immune correlate of protection
WHO reports that no well-established immune correlate of protection exists. In practical terms, researchers cannot point to one universally accepted antibody level or laboratory result and say that it guarantees protection. WHO therefore favors clinical efficacy trials when those trials are feasible. Animal, laboratory and immunogenicity findings can inform development, but they do not substitute for evidence that vaccinated people avoid illness.

- Infected fleas: Fleas acquire the bacterium from infected animals and can transmit it through a bite.
- Direct contact: Handling infected animals, tissues or body fluids can expose skin or mucous membranes.
- Respiratory particles: Pneumonic cases can spread infection through respiratory material, especially during close contact.
WHO reports a 30%–60% case-fatality ratio for bubonic plague (World Health Organization, 2026) when disease is untreated or treatment is delayed. Antibiotics are effective, and early diagnosis can save lives. The severity of that risk is why a missing vaccine should never be interpreted as missing medical options.

Reduce rodent habitat around homes and camps
Remove piles of brush, junk, abandoned vehicles and other places where rodents can shelter near buildings. Store food and refuse so they do not attract rodents. These steps reduce the chance that infected fleas or animals will come into close contact with people.
Use protective equipment for animal handling
Wear gloves when handling potentially infected animals, carcasses or tissues. Do not touch an animal that appears sick or has been found dead without guidance from local health authorities. Workers who must handle such material need job-specific protective procedures, not a generic household precaution.

Prevent flea bites
When flea exposure is possible, use an insect repellent containing DEET or clothing treated with permethrin, following the product label exactly. Clothing, sleeping arrangements and campsite practices should be selected to minimize contact with fleas. Reapply or launder products only as the label directs; more repellent is not safer.

Control fleas on pets
Keep dogs and cats on a veterinarian-approved flea-control program. In areas where plague occurs, CDC advises keeping free-roaming pets out of beds because an infested pet can bring fleas into close household contact. Ask a veterinarian which product is appropriate for the species and weight of the animal.
Limit contact with respiratory cases
If someone may have pneumonic plague, avoid close unprotected contact and follow public-health instructions immediately. Respiratory precautions are especially important for health-care and laboratory personnel, who should use the controls specified by their institution.
What to do after a possible exposure or symptom
- Leave the exposure setting safely. Stop handling the animal, tissue or material and avoid further flea or respiratory contact.
- Contact a medical professional urgently. Tell them exactly what happened, when it happened, where it occurred and whether an animal, flea or person with respiratory symptoms was involved.
- Watch for compatible illness. Fever, sudden weakness, a painful swollen lymph node, or respiratory symptoms after a plausible exposure require prompt assessment. Do not wait for a vaccine appointment.
- Follow public-health and clinical instructions. Antibiotics can be effective, but the choice, dose and duration must be determined by a clinician. Early treatment is important.
- Do not self-isolate from needed care because you lack vaccination. Call ahead so the facility can arrange appropriate precautions while evaluating you.
A vaccine, where available for a narrowly defined group, would be only one layer of protection. It would not replace protective equipment, flea control, exposure reporting or treatment after symptoms begin.

What may change in the future
New plague-vaccine formulations are being developed, and some have been studied experimentally. A future product could have a defined indication, schedule and measured efficacy, but those details cannot be assumed from older vaccines or laboratory results. Regulatory approval, supply and recommendations may differ by country.
When evaluating a future claim, look for the exact product, the disease form studied, the population enrolled, the comparator, follow-up period and whether the result measured clinical illness or only an immune response. A headline percentage without those qualifications is not enough to determine personal protection.
Until a product is authorized and routinely supplied where you live, the practical priorities remain exposure avoidance, flea and rodent control, appropriate protective equipment and rapid medical care after a credible exposure.
