The smallest unit of a raster image is a pixel: one sample in a two-dimensional grid that stores numerical information, such as brightness or color. An image-file pixel is data, not necessarily a tiny physical square on a screen. Its physical size depends on how an image is captured, displayed, or printed.
What is a pixel?
“Pixel” is a contraction of “picture element.” The ISO/DIS 18383 digital-imaging glossary defines it as the “smallest geometric unit of information in a digital representation of an image, corresponding to a single spatial sample.” In practical terms, a raster image is a grid, and each position in that grid has one or more numerical values.
The Library of Congress describes a digitized image as a two-dimensional array of pixels. A grayscale pixel can represent a brightness value; a color pixel can hold values for multiple channels. The pixel is therefore a location in image data paired with information about what the image represents at that location.

Each pixel contributes information about a small sampled position in the scene or artwork. Viewed together, the grid’s values form the image: neighboring brightness and color values create edges, textures, and larger shapes. The image file need not contain a miniature colored tile for every pixel; it stores values that software interprets and renders.

For example, a 1200 × 800 raster image contains 1200 samples across and 800 down, or 960,000 pixels in total. That count describes the grid dimensions, not the physical size of the image and not, by itself, how much detail is visible.
Is a pixel a dot?
Not always. In an image file, a pixel is a logical sample in the image data. In a camera or scanner, “pixel” may also refer to a photosensitive sensor cell; on a display, it may refer to an output element; and in printing, it can refer to a printed element. These related uses describe different parts of an imaging system, not interchangeable objects. The Federal Agencies Digitization Guidelines Initiative and the ISO glossary both describe these distinct contexts.

A file pixel has no universal fixed physical width or height. Its physical scale is established when a device captures or displays the image, or when the image is assigned dimensions for printing. A single image can consequently appear at different physical sizes without changing its stored grid.

These terms describe different properties. Pixel count tells you how many samples are in the grid; spatial resolution describes sampling density across space; bit depth describes the number of bits used to encode pixel values. “Resolution” should be qualified because it can refer to image dimensions, spatial sampling density, or tonal precision.

| Term | What it describes | Example or implication |
|---|---|---|
| Pixel dimensions and count | The grid’s width and height, and the total samples they contain. | A 1200 × 800 image has 960,000 grid positions. |
| Spatial resolution | How densely samples represent a unit of space. | The Library of Congress glossary describes it in terms of pixel spaces used to sample a unit length. It is not the same as total pixel count. |
| Bit depth or tonal resolution | How many bits encode a pixel’s value or values, affecting the number of representable shades or channel values. | It may be stated as bits per pixel or bits per channel; the convention matters. |
For a color image, bit depth can be expressed per channel. Microsoft Learn gives an example with three RGB channels at 8 bits per channel: that is 24 bits per pixel and permits 16,777,216 possible channel-value combinations (256 values for each channel, multiplied across three channels). This is a count of encoded combinations, not a claim that every combination looks perceptually distinct.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does enlarging an image add detail?
No. Enlarging a raster image by resampling creates a larger grid, and software estimates values for the added samples by interpolation. Those estimated values can make the image appear smoother, but they are not newly captured scene detail. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office of Research Integrity notes that enlargement does not increase spatial resolution and can introduce artifacts.

Easy to operate, allows you to take it on your trips for children to study plants, minerals, insects, or have fun outdoor activities. This electronic microscope is more of a fixed focus magnifying glass, not a traditional microscope, Not suitable for professional serious biologists!
- 【Optimal Focal Length Range】3-60 mm. To ensure image sharpness, please ensure that the distance between the microscope lens and the object being observed is maintained within the range of 3-60 mm.
Reducing an image also changes its grid: some spatial information is discarded. If the sampling is not handled appropriately, resizing can produce aliasing or moiré patterns. The ISO glossary describes pixel counts as changeable by resampling; the Office of Research Integrity discusses interpolation and resizing artifacts.

How to read an image’s pixel information
- Check width and height to learn the number of samples along each axis; multiply them to get total pixel count.
- Check spatial resolution separately when you need to know how densely the image represents a physical area or length.
- Check the bit-depth convention and whether a stated value is per pixel or per channel when assessing tonal or color encoding.
- Ask whether the grid is original or resampled before treating a larger pixel count as evidence of more captured detail.
