Running a modpack with friends? Godlike.Host offers modded Minecraft server hosting with one-click modpacks (CurseForge, FTB, Technic) and free DDoS protection.
For a current Pixelmon 9.3.x server, allocate at least 4 GB of RAM to the server process, run 64-bit Java 21, and use the matching Minecraft 1.21.1 and NeoForge combination. Four gigabytes is an allocation floor, not the amount of memory the whole computer needs. Leave additional memory for the operating system and Java overhead, then increase the allocation as players, world generation, plugins or sidemods add load.
Pixelmon’s official documentation does not publish a CPU model, core count, clock-speed target, minimum disk size or universal RAM-per-player formula. Those parts of a build must be sized from workload rather than from an invented specification.

The current server installation guide gives one explicit resource figure: At least 4 GB of allocated memory, preferably more. Exact requirements will depend on player count and your exact mods/plugins.
That statement applies to current releases, not every historical Pixelmon pack.
| Component | Current documented requirement | What it means in practice |
|---|---|---|
| Server RAM | At least 4 GB allocated; preferably more | Reserve extra host memory for the operating system, Java, file cache and other services. |
| Java | 64-bit Java 21 for Pixelmon 9.3.0 and newer | Do not substitute an older or newer runtime unless the exact pack documentation says it is supported. |
| Loader | NeoForge for Pixelmon 9.3.0 and newer | Pixelmon 9.3.x is not a Forge server. |
| Minecraft | 1.21.1 for Pixelmon 9.3.0–9.3.13 | The server, client, loader and mod files must describe the same combination. |
| CPU | No official numerical minimum | Choose strong per-core performance and enough total capacity for the rest of the machine. |
| Storage | No official numerical minimum | Budget for the server files, generated world, logs, backups and future updates; an SSD is a sensible operational choice. |
How much RAM does a Pixelmon server need?
Four gigabytes is the current floor
For Pixelmon 9.3.0 and later, the documented minimum is 4 GB allocated to the server process, with more preferred. “Allocated” refers to the Java process’s usable heap, not the total physical RAM installed in the host. A computer with exactly 4 GB total cannot safely give all 4 GB to Minecraft: the operating system, Java’s non-heap memory, file cache and monitoring or backup services still need space.

Use 4 GB as a starting point for a lightly populated server with a modest number of additional mods. Watch memory use and tick performance while players explore, generate chunks and interact with large numbers of entities. Increase the allocation when the workload grows instead of treating 4 GB as a permanent player limit.
Why a universal RAM-per-player number is misleading
Pixelmon’s official pages do not provide a player-to-RAM formula. Two servers with the same player count can have very different needs because of exploration distance, simultaneous chunk generation, entity density, redstone activity, plugins, sidemods and the size of the world already stored on disk. A quiet five-player base can be lighter than two players generating new terrain in different directions.

| Workload pattern | Starting approach | Adjustment trigger |
|---|---|---|
| Small private world, few add-ons | Allocate 4 GB and leave additional host memory unused by Java. | Raise the allocation if garbage collection, out-of-memory errors or sustained lag appear during exploration. |
| Several regular players or multiple sidemods | Start above the 4 GB floor if the host permits it. | Increase memory when concurrent exploration, entities or mod systems cause the heap to remain near its limit. |
| Busy community server or large mod collection | Plan a larger machine and test under peak activity rather than relying on the minimum. | Scale RAM and CPU together; memory alone will not repair a CPU-bound tick loop. |
Legacy Forge instructions use a different number
Older Forge-era instructions document a 3 GB minimum and show a 3 GB -Xms/-Xmx example. That figure belongs to the older instructions and should not be used as the target for a current NeoForge Pixelmon 9.3.x server. Select the requirement for the exact Pixelmon line you are installing.
What CPU do you need for Pixelmon?
No official Pixelmon guide reviewed specifies a processor model, core count or clock speed. That is important: a quoted “minimum CPU” would be an unsupported invention. Pixelmon’s server workload is sensitive to the speed of the main game tick, while other threads handle tasks such as network work, chunk operations and Java housekeeping.
Practical CPU selection
For a self-hosted machine, prefer a recent CPU with strong single-core or per-core performance and enough total capacity to run the operating system, backups, voice chat or other services without contention. A many-core processor with weak per-core performance is not automatically better for a Minecraft server.

- Tick processing: entity AI, redstone, machines and mod logic must complete within each tick interval. Heavy logic can cause low tick rate even when RAM remains available.
- Chunk generation: new terrain and Pixelmon biome features can create short CPU spikes, especially when several players travel in different directions.
- Entity counts: crowded farms, battles, drops and loaded bases increase recurring work.
- Sidemods and plugins: their code can dominate CPU use, so the same processor may perform differently with another modpack.
- Shared hosting: a provider’s CPU share, throttling policy and neighboring workloads matter as much as the advertised processor family.
Monitor tick time or server performance under the busiest expected scenario. If the server is CPU-bound, adding RAM will not restore tick rate; reduce entity or simulation load, improve the offending mod configuration, or move to a host with stronger dedicated CPU capacity.
How much storage does Pixelmon use?
Official Pixelmon documentation does not state a minimum or recommended disk size. The correct capacity depends on what you retain, not just on the initial download.
What consumes disk space
- Server and loader files: NeoForge, Pixelmon’s server jar, configuration files and any additional mods.
- The world: generated chunks remain on disk and grow as players explore. A world with extensive travel can become much larger than a newly created one.
- Logs: routine logs are small individually but accumulate if they are never rotated or removed.
- Backups: scheduled archives can exceed the live world size when several generations are retained.
- Updates and staging: temporary copies are useful when changing Pixelmon or NeoForge versions and need room during the upgrade.
Choose capacity by estimating the live world, the number and compression of backups, and expected growth over the period you will keep the server. An SSD or NVMe drive is a sensible operational preference because it improves world loading, chunk saves and backup handling, but it is not an official Pixelmon specification. Keep backups on separate physical storage or a separate service when possible; a second folder on the same failed disk is not a disaster-recovery plan.

Java, Minecraft and loader versions
Pixelmon compatibility is release-specific. Match the Pixelmon jar, Minecraft version, loader and Java runtime as one package. The current table maps the following combinations:
| Pixelmon line | Minecraft version | Java requirement | Loader guidance |
|---|---|---|---|
| 9.3.0–9.3.13 | 1.21.1 | Java 21 | NeoForge |
| 9.2.4–9.2.10 | 1.20.2 | Java 17 | Forge-era/current-guide transition |
| 9.2.0–9.2.3 | 1.20.1 | Java 17 | Forge-era/current-guide transition |
| 9.1.12 | 1.16.5 | Java 8–11 guidance differs by page; verify the exact pack | Forge |
The current guide states that, as of 9.3.0, Pixelmon requires NeoForge rather than Forge. It also warns that earlier or later Java versions will not work for the listed release bands. Installing the right Java major version is therefore a compatibility step, not merely a performance tweak.
Server installation and memory setup
Use a dedicated directory so the world, configuration, logs and backups are not mixed with unrelated files. The exact installer names can change between releases, but the sequence is consistent for a current NeoForge pack.

- Confirm the target combination. Write down the Pixelmon release, Minecraft version, NeoForge version and Java major version before downloading anything. For Pixelmon 9.3.x, that means Minecraft 1.21.1, NeoForge and Java 21.
- Install the server loader. Run the matching NeoForge server installer in the dedicated directory. Do not place a 9.3.x jar in a Forge installation.
- Set the Java heap. In current NeoForge setups, edit
user_jvm_args.txt. Set the initial and maximum heap values appropriate to your host, using at least the documented 4 GB allocation for current Pixelmon and leaving operating-system headroom outside that value. - Launch once. The first start normally stops so you can accept Minecraft’s EULA. Open the generated EULA file, set the acceptance value as required by Minecraft’s terms, save it, and start the server again.
- Add Pixelmon. Put the Pixelmon
-serverjar in the server’smodsfolder. The server variant is smaller and intended for server upload; it is not a client replacement and only works on servers. - Add other mods deliberately. Verify that each sidemod supports the same Minecraft, loader and Java combination. Add them in small groups so a startup failure has an identifiable cause.
- Handle biome-generation mods. If a mod changes biome generation, delete the provisional world before the final Pixelmon/modded start. Otherwise, the area around spawn may retain terrain generated without the intended biome rules. Preserve a backup before deleting any world.
- Test before inviting players. Start the server, join with a matching client, travel through new chunks, check logs and observe tick performance while the expected workload is active.
Client and server compatibility
Every player must run the same Pixelmon version as the server. A mismatch produces a Mod Rejection error during connection. The Minecraft version, loader and required sidemods must also line up; changing only the Pixelmon jar is not a safe upgrade procedure.
Players need the Java Edition PC version of Minecraft because Forge and NeoForge mods such as Pixelmon run on Java Edition. Bedrock clients cannot join this modded Java server. Distribute a clearly labeled client pack containing the exact versions used by the server, and change the pack only after testing a backup copy of the world.
Self-hosting versus renting a server
Local hosting can be suitable for a private group on the same network. The official guide says local servers are generally reachable only from that local network and strongly recommends paid hosting for bigger servers because of performance, stability and safety.
| Consideration | Self-hosting | Paid hosting |
|---|---|---|
| Control | Full control of files, Java, NeoForge and configuration. | Usually includes a control panel and managed startup settings; confirm file and migration access. |
| Performance | Depends on your CPU, RAM, disk and internet connection, shared with other household tasks. | Compare the guaranteed RAM allocation and CPU share, not only the plan name. |
| Availability | Your power, network and maintenance determine uptime. | Ask about hardware failures, restart policy and support response. |
| Data protection | You must schedule and test your own backups. | Check automated backup frequency, retention and whether backups are stored separately. |
| Network and safety | You manage exposure, firewalling and access. | Check network location, DDoS protection and account security features. |
| Pixelmon support | You install and troubleshoot Java and NeoForge. | Confirm explicit Java 21, NeoForge and modpack support before purchase. |
For a hosted plan, verify the actual memory limit, CPU policy, SSD or NVMe storage, automated backups, supported Java and NeoForge versions, data-center location, DDoS protection, migration tools and support quality. Pixelmon’s documentation does not endorse a particular provider or publish a price that guarantees performance.
Quick Recap
Troubleshooting common requirement and setup failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Mod Rejection on join | Client and server Pixelmon versions differ, or a required mod is missing. | Compare the complete client and server mod lists and use the exact same Pixelmon release. |
| Server will not start on 9.3.x | Wrong Java major version or Forge used instead of NeoForge. | Use 64-bit Java 21 and the matching NeoForge installation for Minecraft 1.21.1. |
| Out-of-memory error | The heap is too small for the world and mod workload, or the host has no headroom. | Check user_jvm_args.txt, raise the allocation when physical memory allows, remove unnecessary load and leave room for the operating system. |
| Lag during exploration | Chunk generation, biome work or CPU contention is overwhelming tick processing. | Test with fewer concurrent explorers, reduce expensive mod activity, and move to stronger per-core CPU capacity if needed. |
| Spawn has unexpected biomes | The world was generated before a biome-generation mod was installed. | Restore or remove the provisional world only after making a backup, then generate the final world with the complete mod set. |
| Disk fills unexpectedly | World growth, logs or retained backups were not budgeted. | Measure each category, rotate logs, prune tested backup generations and expand storage before the filesystem reaches capacity. |
A practical pre-launch checklist
- Pixelmon, Minecraft, NeoForge and Java versions form a documented compatible combination.
- The server process receives at least 4 GB for a current 9.3.x release, while the host retains operating-system headroom.
- The CPU has strong per-core performance and is not competing with unplanned workloads.
- Storage covers the live world, logs, backups and future growth; backups are tested and preferably separate from the live disk.
- The Pixelmon
-serverjar is inmods, and clients have the exact matching release. - The EULA has been accepted through the generated server file before normal startup.
- A backup exists before changing biome-generation mods, Pixelmon versions or the world.
- Peak-load testing includes new chunk generation, the expected player count and the heaviest sidemods.
