To turn on Lockdown on a Pixel, press the Power and Volume up buttons at the same time, then tap Lockdown. While it is active, the phone hides lock-screen notifications and disables fingerprint or face unlocking and Extend Unlock. Lockdown lasts only until you unlock the phone.
How to turn on Lockdown on a Pixel
- Press the Power and Volume up buttons together.
- Tap Lockdown in the menu.
Google’s Lockdown instructions describe this button sequence. Menu labels or availability can vary by device and software version.
Know your regular screen-lock credential before activating Lockdown. At the next unlock, you’ll need that credential rather than fingerprint or face recognition. Google lists PIN, pattern, and password as screen-lock options in its Pixel screen-lock guide.
What changes while Lockdown is active?
- Biometric unlocking: Fingerprint and face recognition unlocking are disabled.
- Extend Unlock: This automatic unlocking feature is disabled.
- Lock-screen notifications: Notifications are turned off on the lock screen.
These are the specific effects Google documents; they describe changes to unlocking and lock-screen visibility, not a guarantee against every security threat.

When does Lockdown turn off?
Lockdown ends when you unlock your device. Google states that it “will only work until you unlock your device.” To use it again later, repeat the Power + Volume up sequence and tap Lockdown.

Google’s Face Unlock guidance says Face Unlock is available on Pixel 7 and later, including Pixel Fold and Pixel Tablet. Lockdown temporarily disables the listed unlock conveniences and hides lock-screen notifications. It does not replace using a strong screen-lock credential, keeping the phone’s software updated, or other security practices. Google’s cited instructions do not quantify a broader security guarantee.
