If a Pixel monitor shows “No signal,” first verify that the phone is a supported model and build, then check the entire video path: a DisplayPort Alternate Mode-capable USB-C connection, the correct monitor input, and a compatible adapter or cable. Google documents wired display projection for Pixel 8 and later. Connect the display, choose Mirror display when the prompt appears, and troubleshoot directly from the phone before adding a hub or dock.

A USB-C plug that fits is not proof that video can work. The phone, adapter or dock, cable, and monitor must all support the required video mode. Work through the checks in order so you know whether the fault is the Pixel, the display, the cable, the adapter, the hub, or simply the selected input.

What Pixel phones support wired external displays

Google’s Pixel Phone Help documentation covers wired external-display projection for Pixel 8 and later. The phone connects to a monitor or television through a DisplayPort or HDMI-to-USB-C connection, then presents a Mirror display prompt. If the phone is older than the documented range, or its software build does not implement display output, the monitor can remain blank even though the phone charges.

Software support is also changing. Android Developers reported on March 3, 2026, that connected-display desktop windowing reached general availability with Android 16 QPR3 on supported Pixel devices. That release affects desktop-style windowing; it does not make every USB-C Pixel, cable, monitor, or dock automatically compatible. Model, Android build, and the hardware in the signal path all matter.

Check the model and Android build first

  1. Open Settings > About phone and note the Pixel model.
  2. Open Settings > System > Software update and install any available update.
  3. Restart the phone after updating, then reconnect the monitor.

If the phone is outside Google’s documented Pixel 8-and-later range, treat that as a compatibility question rather than a cable failure. If it is a supported model but runs an older build, update before buying additional accessories. Android 16 QPR3 matters particularly if you expect desktop-style windows rather than only a mirrored phone screen, and it is available only on supported Pixel devices.

Why a USB-C connection can charge without showing video

USB-C describes the connector shape, not the signals a device supports. Video requires DisplayPort Alternate Mode (DP Alt Mode) across the phone, adapter or dock, cable, and display. A charge-only USB-C cable can deliver power while carrying no picture at all.

A reliable diagnostic path is therefore:

  • Phone: supports wired display output and DP Alt Mode.
  • Adapter or cable: is a full-featured USB-C-to-HDMI adapter or USB-C-to-DisplayPort cable, explicitly intended for video.
  • Monitor: has a compatible HDMI or DisplayPort input and can accept the signal mode being sent.
  • Power: a portable monitor or dock receives any supplemental power its USB-C video path requires.

During diagnosis, connect the Pixel directly to the monitor whenever possible. A hub introduces another connector, chipset, and power dependency. Once a direct connection works, add the hub back to identify whether it is the extra failure point.

What “USB-C to HDMI” should mean

For an HDMI monitor, choose an adapter that explicitly says it carries video from a USB-C source and supports DP Alt Mode. For a DisplayPort monitor, use a USB-C-to-DisplayPort video cable or a compatible adapter. A listing that mentions only charging or ordinary USB data is not enough. The connector may fit perfectly while the high-speed video lanes are absent.

Do not use a charging indicator as a video test. Power negotiation and picture transmission are separate functions. A phone can charge from the monitor or dock and still have no display output. Likewise, an adapter can power a phone while its video chipset, cable, or monitor port is incompatible.

Fix a “No signal” message in the right order

1. Select the input that is actually connected

Use the monitor’s physical Input or Source control and choose the port in use: for example, HDMI 1, HDMI 2, or DisplayPort. If the adapter is plugged into HDMI 2, selecting HDMI 1 will correctly produce a blank screen because the monitor is listening elsewhere.

Temporarily disconnect other source devices. Automatic input switching can select a computer, game console, or another USB-C device instead of the Pixel. After choosing the input manually, unplug and reconnect the Pixel so the monitor detects a fresh signal. If the display has separate USB-C and HDMI video inputs, select the one that matches the actual adapter path rather than assuming the monitor will switch automatically.

2. Confirm the cable and adapter carry video

Replace any cable described only as “USB-C charging” or “USB-C data” with a cable or adapter that explicitly supports DP Alt Mode video. For HDMI displays, use a full-featured USB-C-to-HDMI video adapter. For DisplayPort displays, use a USB-C-to-DisplayPort cable designed for video.

Do not infer video capability from the phone charging indicator. Charging proves that power pins are connected; it does not prove that the high-speed video lanes are available. If an accessory has separate power input, connect that power while testing, especially with a portable monitor or dock whose USB-C video path requires supplemental power.

3. Reconnect in a controlled sequence

  1. Turn the monitor on and select its HDMI or DisplayPort input.
  2. Unplug the video connection from both the Pixel and the display.
  3. Wait briefly so the monitor and phone clear the previous link state.
  4. Reconnect the display end first.
  5. Reconnect the phone end.
  6. Watch the Pixel for the Mirror display prompt and select it.

This sequence removes a partially negotiated connection as a variable. If nothing appears, repeat the same process with a different known-good cable or adapter rather than changing several components at once. Changing one item per test makes the result useful: if a new adapter works with the same phone, monitor, and cable, the original adapter is suspect.

4. Test the monitor with another source

Connect a laptop, game console, or other known-working video source to the same monitor input. If that source also reports no signal, the monitor input, monitor, or its power supply is the likely fault. If the other source works, continue testing the Pixel-side components. Use the same input and, where possible, the same cable so you are testing the part you think you are testing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Test the Pixel with another display

Try a second monitor or television with a compatible HDMI or DisplayPort input. A second display separates a phone or adapter problem from a particular monitor’s input or supported signal modes. Change only one component per test and record which combination produces an image. If the Pixel works on another display, check the first monitor’s selected input and supported resolution or refresh rate before concluding that the phone is defective.

Quick triage for a blank screen

  1. Confirm the Pixel is a Pixel 8 or later and install the latest available Android update.
  2. Set the monitor manually to the occupied HDMI or DisplayPort input.
  3. Remove the hub and connect directly through a verified DP Alt Mode video adapter or cable.
  4. Reconnect display end first, then phone end, and accept Mirror display.
  5. Swap one cable, adapter, or display at a time.
  6. Only after those checks, restart both devices and consider service.

When a hub or dock is involved

Hubs and docks add useful ports but create more opportunities for a link to fail. Google’s troubleshooting sequence for a connected hub is to leave the hub attached, unplug the monitor cable from the hub, and plug it back in. This refreshes the display connection without disturbing every peripheral.

Hub isolation procedure

  1. Leave the hub or dock connected to the Pixel.
  2. Remove the monitor cable from the hub.
  3. Check that the monitor is on and set to the matching HDMI or DisplayPort input.
  4. Reconnect the monitor cable to the hub.
  5. If the image remains absent, try another connector type on the hub, such as HDMI instead of DisplayPort, with the appropriate video adapter.
  6. Bypass the hub and connect the Pixel directly to the monitor. A direct image confirms that the hub path, its power, or its port is involved.

Some portable displays and docks need external power for their USB-C video path. Connect the required power supply before judging the video connection. If the monitor works directly but not through the dock, compare the dock’s stated DP Alt Mode support, power delivery, and output connector with the Pixel and monitor requirements. A dock can have a video-capable USB-C connector for a computer yet still fail with a Pixel if the phone or dock does not support the same path.

Choose the correct cable or adapter

Use the following checklist before purchasing a replacement. The goal is a complete, compatible video path rather than simply another USB-C lead.

Decision point What to verify Why it matters
Pixel model and build Pixel 8 or later under Google’s documented wired-projection support; current Android build, with Android 16 QPR3 desktop windowing available on supported devices An unsupported model or build can stay blank regardless of the accessory.
Display connector HDMI or DisplayPort on the monitor The adapter or cable must terminate in the same video standard the monitor is using.
USB-C capability DP Alt Mode support, not charging-only operation USB-C shape alone does not carry a picture.
Connection topology Direct phone-to-monitor path for diagnosis; hub or dock only after direct testing Every hub adds another compatibility and power dependency.
Monitor mode Input, supported resolution, and supported refresh rate A monitor may reject a signal mode it cannot display even when the cable is sound.
Power Supplemental power for a portable monitor or dock when its USB-C path requires it Insufficient power can look like a video failure.

A “USB-C to HDMI” label is useful only when the product documentation also identifies video support. Avoid selecting a cable solely because its plugs fit. Compare HDMI and DisplayPort by the connector actually available on the monitor, then keep the path as simple as possible while diagnosing. There is no need to buy both types at once: test the port and standard already available, or use the alternate connector only as an isolation step.

Fix flicker, green tint, or intermittent signal loss

Flicker usually means the link is repeatedly losing and renegotiating its signal. Reduce variables before replacing the phone.

Stabilize an external image

  1. Remove the hub or dock and connect the Pixel directly to the monitor.
  2. Use a shorter, certified video cable or a different known-good adapter.
  3. Confirm the monitor remains on the correct HDMI or DisplayPort input.
  4. Provide the portable monitor or dock with its required power.
  5. Test a second monitor to determine whether the original display is involved.
  6. Install the latest Pixel system update and restart both devices.

If flicker stops on a direct connection, reconnect the dock and its peripherals one at a time. If it returns only with one cable, adapter, or monitor input, that component or signal mode is the practical next suspect. If it appears on multiple displays and adapters, an updated phone build and a service assessment become more important.

Google’s Android Issue Tracker contains a report titled “external monitor loses signal intermittently in desktop mode (with different usb c to hdmi adapters).” That title documents a reported issue, not a measured failure rate or proof that every intermittent connection is a software bug. Cable quality, power, monitor behavior, and adapters remain possible causes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Separate external flicker from phone-screen flicker

Observe which panel is affected. If only the external monitor flickers, keep troubleshooting the cable, adapter, input, dock, power, and monitor. If the Pixel’s built-in screen itself flickers, shows a green tint, or develops horizontal or vertical lines, Google says the phone may have a hardware issue.

Install the latest system update first. If the phone’s own display still shows those symptoms, contact Google or arrange repair rather than repeatedly swapping monitor accessories. A fault visible on the phone panel is a different diagnostic branch from a monitor that loses signal.

Restart before considering a reset

After connection and input checks, restart the Pixel and monitor. A restart clears a stalled display handshake without deleting data. Do not factory-reset the phone as a first-line fix for a blank external display.

For Pixel Slate-class troubleshooting, Google describes a hard-reset sequence: power off, wait one minute, then hold Power and Volume up for 10 seconds. Use that procedure only when it applies to the device being serviced and after ordinary restart and connection checks. It is not a substitute for a DP Alt Mode-capable cable or a supported Pixel model.

When to stop troubleshooting and seek service

Arrange Google support or repair when the Pixel’s own panel continues to flicker, display a green tint, or show horizontal or vertical lines after updating. Seek help as well when a supported, updated Pixel fails with multiple known-good DP Alt Mode adapters and cables on more than one monitor while those accessories work with another source. That pattern makes a phone-side hardware or software fault more plausible than a single bad monitor input.

There is no authoritative published failure-rate statistic for Pixel external-monitor problems. Treat each diagnosis as a component-isolation exercise: confirm model and build, verify DP Alt Mode, select the real input, test direct before hub connections, and replace one part at a time.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my Pixel monitor showing “No signal” even though the phone is charging?

Charging does not prove video support. Confirm that the Pixel is a supported Pixel 8 or later, the phone and accessory support DisplayPort Alternate Mode, the monitor is set to the occupied HDMI or DisplayPort input, and the cable is a video-rated USB-C adapter or cable rather than charge-only.

Which USB-C-to-HDMI cable works with a Pixel?

Use a full-featured USB-C-to-HDMI video adapter that explicitly supports DisplayPort Alternate Mode and is compatible with the Pixel model and Android build. Do not choose solely by plug shape or a charging label.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I use HDMI or DisplayPort?

Use whichever input the monitor provides and match it with the corresponding DP Alt Mode adapter or cable. If one path fails, testing the other with a compatible adapter can isolate a port, cable, or adapter problem.

Why is my monitor on the wrong input?

Press the monitor’s Input or Source control and select the exact occupied port, such as HDMI 1, HDMI 2, or DisplayPort. Disconnect other sources temporarily so automatic switching cannot select a different device.

Why does the external display keep flickering?

Remove the hub, connect directly, try a shorter or known-good video cable and adapter, verify the monitor input, provide required dock or portable-monitor power, update Android, and test another display. Intermittent desktop-mode signal loss has been reported, but a report is not a failure-rate measurement.

Does Android 16 QPR3 fix every Pixel external-display problem?

No. Android Developers announced general availability of connected-display desktop windowing with Android 16 QPR3 on supported Pixel devices on March 3, 2026. Hardware model, DP Alt Mode support, cable, adapter, monitor input, signal mode, and power still determine whether a connection works.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What if the Pixel’s own screen flickers or turns green?

Google says flicker, a green tint, or horizontal or vertical lines on the phone screen may indicate a hardware issue. Install the latest system update; if the symptom remains, contact Google or arrange repair.

Should I factory-reset my Pixel for a blank monitor?

No. First verify model and build, input, DP Alt Mode cable or adapter, direct connection, power, and the monitor with another source. Restart the phone and monitor only after those checks; do not erase the phone as a first-line display fix.

The Bottom Line

A Pixel external monitor usually fails because one link in the video path is unsupported or misselected. Confirm Pixel 8-or-later and current-build support, use a DP Alt Mode-capable USB-C video adapter or cable, choose the monitor’s actual HDMI or DisplayPort input, test directly before using a hub, and verify power. If the Pixel’s own screen shows persistent flicker, green tint, or lines after updating, stop swapping accessories and contact Google.
