Set up these seven Pixel emergency features before you need them: Emergency SOS, emergency contacts and medical information, Emergency Sharing, Safety Check, Car Crash Detection, Satellite SOS (on eligible models and in supported locations), and wireless and earthquake alerts. Most controls are in Personal Safety or Settings → Safety & emergency. These settings improve readiness; they do not guarantee that a call, message, alert, or rescue will get through.
Start with these eligibility and safety checks
Google’s setup instructions apply to Pixel phones, but availability depends on the feature, device, region, network, account, and settings. Check the feature’s own requirements below rather than assuming every Pixel supports every option. Keep your phone charged, and do not rely on it as your only emergency plan.
- Know how to call your local emergency number without relying on a feature activating automatically.
- Review the settings after changing phones, SIMs, accounts, or regions; permissions and eligibility can differ.
- Where a feature offers a demo, try it in advance and confirm the device reports it as available.

Where to set it up
Open the Personal Safety app and configure Emergency SOS, including which actions should follow activation. Google says Emergency SOS is available on Pixel 4a and later, including Pixel Fold.

How it starts and what can stop it working
Press the power button five or more times to start Emergency SOS. Depending on your chosen configuration, you may need to hold inside the red circle or wait for a countdown. Confirm the on-screen behavior during setup so you know what to do under pressure.
Google Pixel Phone Help says: “Emergency SOS doesn’t work in airplane mode or when Battery Saver is on.” As with any emergency feature, an attempted call or message can still fail if the phone cannot connect.
2. Add emergency contacts and medical information
Enter details in Personal Safety
In the Personal Safety app, open Your info. Add emergency contacts and useful medical details, such as allergies and medications. Keep them current; outdated information may be less useful to someone assisting you.

Turn on Show when locked if you want emergency information accessible without unlocking the phone. Google warns that anyone holding the phone can view the lock-screen message and emergency information when this option is enabled. Decide whether that accessibility trade-off suits you.

A SIM or eSIM is needed for the phone to text an emergency contact later. Adding a contact or medical detail does not itself contact anyone.
3. Set up Emergency Sharing
Choose contacts and understand what they receive
Configure emergency contacts first in Personal Safety. When you start Emergency Sharing, those contacts can receive your name, a Google Maps link showing your real-time location, your remaining battery percentage, and any message you add.
Start and stop sharing
Sharing can be stopped manually and ends automatically after 24 hours. It depends on the phone being able to provide and transmit information; a Maps link is not a guarantee that someone sees it or can reach you.

4. Schedule a Safety Check
Set the check-in
Open Personal Safety → Safety Check, choose a reason, duration, and contacts, then schedule it. The check can be set for 15 minutes to 8 hours ahead.

Know what happens if you miss it
When it is time to check in, you have 60 seconds to mark yourself safe. If you do not, Emergency Sharing starts. If the phone shuts down or loses signal, the scheduled check remains active and may share the last known location at the scheduled time. This feature is unavailable to supervised accounts under the age of consent.
5. Turn on Car Crash Detection
Check eligibility and permissions
Google lists Car Crash Detection for Pixel 4a and later, including Fold. Set it up in Personal Safety and grant the required location, microphone, and physical-activity permissions. Google’s help also says a SIM is required.
Understand the response sequence and limits
If the phone detects a severe crash, it prompts you to respond. If you do not respond within 60 seconds, it attempts an emergency call and shares your approximate location. It may miss crashes, while high-impact activity can trigger a false detection. A weak network or an existing call can prevent it from contacting emergency services.
It does not work in airplane mode or while Battery Saver is on, and Google says it works only in the country of the phone’s SIM—not while roaming. Detection is not a substitute for calling for help when you can do so.

6. Check Satellite SOS on eligible Pixels
Confirm device, country, and activation
Google’s current help page lists Satellite SOS for Pixel devices from Pixel 9 onward, except Pixel 9a. The listed supported locations include the US, Canada, Puerto Rico, the UK, and specified European countries; availability should be checked for your location because the supported list can change. The feature must be activated on the device, and Google Messages must be the default messaging app.
Try the demo and account for obstructions
Go to Settings → Safety & emergency → Satellite SOS to review service status and try the demo before relying on the feature. Trees, buildings, terrain, or other obstructions can block the satellite connection, so being outdoors with a clear view of the sky matters.

7. Review wireless public-safety and earthquake alerts
Wireless emergency alerts
Open Settings → Notifications → Wireless emergency alerts to review the controls available on your phone. Categories can include extreme threats, severe threats, AMBER alerts, and public-safety messages. Controls vary by region, and some national alerts cannot be turned off. Earthquake alerts
Google says earthquake alerts are on by default, require Wi-Fi or mobile data, and are supported only in certain locations. An alert may not arrive for every nearby earthquake. Google identifies ShakeAlert as the source in California, Oregon, and Washington; Greece and New Zealand use the Android Earthquake Alerts System.
Review the setting at Settings → Safety & emergency → Earthquake alerts. Location coverage and connectivity affect whether alerts are available or delivered.
Related setting: Emergency Location Service
Emergency Location Service (ELS) is separate from voluntarily sharing your location through Google Maps. Review it at Settings → Location → Location services → Emergency Location Service. If supported in your country or region and on your mobile network, and not disabled, ELS can send location to first responders during an emergency call or text. Google notes that carriers might still send location if ELS is off, so this switch does not control every way a carrier may provide location. See Manage your Pixel phone’s location settings.
What these settings can—and cannot—do
Emergency features can prepare contacts, information, location sharing, automated detection, and alert delivery, but each depends on conditions such as eligibility, permissions, coverage, network access, and regional support. No setting guarantees that emergency services can be reached or that help will arrive. When it is safe and possible, contact local emergency services directly.
